My Grandmother's on the way out.

It's no real surprise, actually. She suffered a stroke several years ago and has been in a fairly steady decline since. . .starting with her mental health, and finally, her body.

What kills me the most about 'stroke dementia' is that most folks who suffer it KNOW that they're not firing on all cylinders anymore. In fact, one day, during a flash of sharp lucidity, my Grandmother was her old self again. . .and actually laughed and said, "I still remember everything. . .I just get it in the wrong order. I see that I'm getting it wrong, but I can't sort it out."

It killed me to hear that. A strong, Irish grandmother now dependent upon the staff of a nursing home to live day to day.

I got a call from Mom last night telling me that "Mema" was on the way out. . .her body was simply winding down. She wasn't expected to make it through the night. She did, of course. . .she's got that Irish thing of hanging on, just because you can't CONVINCE us that we're actually DONE with our work.

So now. . .I get to agonize about it for an undeterminable length of time until the end finally comes.

Suck.

Sorry you have to go through this. She sounds a lot like my grandma, who has also been gradually winding down for a while now. She's determined to hang around at least until her 90th birthday in April, but who knows.
Here's to all our grandfolks, alive and otherwise!

I'm sorry, Static. It's hard to watch someone you love go like that.

CALLMESERENITY

Static,
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I've been through similar situations, and I'm going through one now. It's horrible watching loved ones grow old like that. My grandfather has parkinson's, and it hurts to watch him shake or stumble for a word.
I just try to remember the better days, enjoy what I have of today, and not think about the future.
It sounds to me like your Mema lived a full life, and that is something to give thanks for.
We're here for you.
*hugs*

I picture my grandfather healthy and happy and in a better place now. It helps. Sounds cheesy, but it helps.

There's not much to say without sounding trite, especially not from this distance, but I know where you're coming from.

My grandfather passed last year, in pretty much the same circumstances.

Sometimes you'd think it would be easier for them if it just happened quick and then the rest of the times you don't want it to happen at all. And both of those makes you feel bad for different reasons.

Know that we're here if you want or need to talk and that we're all thinking of you.

I'm sorry Static. I lost my grandma a few years ago after a massive stroke. Nothing really helps, I know, but I'm sending all the virtual hugs I can your way.
