Looks like an illegal salvage operation. Does it? That's discouraging
Wednesday, September 7, 2005

Am I the only one acutely discouraged by the Serenity trailers? Maybe there are thousands of blogs already that say this ... but the music isn't right, the cinematography isn't right, even the characters aren't right ... what's with the captain being outwitted by Jayne ? ("Well .... you can't.") The story, yeah it seems absolutely perfect ... it's just everyone is, for one, all Hollywoodized, and it seems more like a trailer for the Fifth Element than anything to do with firefly. I am just feeling down about it all. Am I going to be disappointed?

Well ... I appreciate the reassurance. I still can't agree that the music is appropriate because music like that never appears anywhere in the show ... it is all techno-y and digital, whereas the show is full of acoustical world music. And, no Jayne doesn't outwit Mal, it's just that he seems to catch him offguard, which never happens with Jayne and Mal. That part with Zoe, yeah it's a similar way of saying it but the exchange is completely different.

I disagree that the movie should be more glamourous. Who is going to have time to make themselves up like that when they're out being bad guys? Why does Mal look like he should be on the cover of GQ? The story appears to be what I expect ... I just still want it to feel like the world I've basically been absolved by. Anyway, I guess I'll know for sure in 22 days.

Thanks again for the commentary.

You have nothing to fear.

'Cept, y'know, Reavers, the Alliance, stubbing your toe... All that stuff.

I wouldn't exactly call what Jayne did "outwitting". Just threw him off guard is all. That is the genius of Mal's comical side. Like some of Ben Stiller's characters, Mal's humor is derived from his inability to answer quick. And that perfect comedic timing, the half-a-heart pause.

Remember in Serenity (the pilot), when Zoe voices her concern about having alliance goods stowed away with passengers around?

As for the trailers... it's Firefly: the Movie. It's gotta be more epic. But I didn't once feel a change in heart. They just look more glamorous. Like they should.

Please trust in Joss.

The movie, in my opinion, was brilliant. It was very different to what I expected from the trailer.

It's very Firefly, though. Even if some things happened on a more epic scale, they were still happening to our crew.

Imagine Firefly with a $50 million budget. *That* is the movie.

um. hi.
i liked it! (esp. the river kicking ass part!) and the fact is that without a trailer that catches the public's eye this movie could be doomed. browncoat votes will only go so far. if we want a sequel out trailers will have to be a mite different. i haven't seen the movie but i have heard no complaints about it straying from its firefly roots.
as for mal and jayne . . . i liked it!
nice to hear your thoughts though!

shakespeare is still a lot like sex!

I've seen the movie, and in my opinion, it was Firefly through and through. Yes, some things are going to be different, but it still has all the things I love about the show.
