The Malcolm Reynolds Teaching Method
Monday, August 1, 2005

Most of you realise that I teach high school English. In watching Firefly over and over and over again, I've realised that you can learn a whole heck of a lot about teaching from watching Mal. Now I have it listed out here as a cursory list in no real order. I want input from you guys about other things you've noticed and better ways to phrase stuff on the list.

The Malcolm Reynolds Teaching Method:

1. I am the captain and, no, you can't run this ship.

2. You all got on this boat for different reasons.

3. Hold the crew to high standards.

4. Rule hard, but rule fair.

5. Got something to say, say it to my face.

6. Honesty - Always shoot straight.

7. Exploit the blurred lines.

8. Everyone on the boat is part of the crew. -teamwork

9. If you goof it up, admit it. Preferrably before we find out on our own.

10. You can only rely on yourself.

11. Piss me off too much, I got no problem shoving you out the airlock.

That's all I got so far...thoughts? Additions? Please?!

How about, "When you can't run you crawl, and when you can't crawl you find someone to carry you."??

"See, this is the input I need. I was coming up with this at work and it'd probably work better while watching eps! I'd totally back your #10."

So many things work better while watching Firefly. Well, maybe not driving or operating heavy machinery, but you know what I mean.

Yes! Cedric! Nice ones! I can't believe I forgot the "Your mouth is talkin'" line as I've actually used that one in class.

"Why are you still arguing what's been decided?"

I think that's an important part of Mal's approach.

I also like it when he says, "Your mouth is talking. You might want to see to that."

I'm sorry, but I've gotta disagree with #10. At the end of Our Mrs. Reynolds, Mal pays tribute to the people he's got with him "who trust each other, who do for each other and ain't always lookin' for the advantage."

How about 10: The way to win is with a team you can trust.
