I love Texas!
Tuesday, July 5, 2005

So, I spent the weekend vising friends in Dallas, TX. I've never been there before, so it was very exciting for me.
I had a fabulous time, part because of the company, and part because I just LOVED Dallas. I wasn't sure how I'd like it. I'm not really the cowboy boots, country music and steak type. But I just fell in love with it.
The city is so spread out and pretty. I didn't get that feeling of being oppressed by all the huge buildings staring down at me that I get in Philly and New York and other large, crammed cities. I enjoy architecture, so all the shiny buildings were fascinating for me. I saw where JFK was shot, too, but that was a little creepy.
I loved the diversity of the people. Living in SC, everything is pretty much black and white, but Dallas is home to people in all the colours of the rainbow and it makes the city more rich. I loved hearing people talking in other languages (and trying to eavesdrop on languages that I know). It made me miss other places I've lived (before I got stuck on the east coast.)
I was impressed with how clean downtown was (compared to Philadelphia, anyway), with how vibrant everything seemed. I loved all the little bits of art here and there, the little parks. It's a pretty city.
On Saturday we rode the train from Plano (where my friends actually live) to the zoo and I noticed that every trainstop was decorated differently. I loved it. Also, I wasn't worried about contracted something nasty from touching the train seats like I was in Philly. It was very clean and shiny.
The sky was SO big, the sun is like a spotlight shining on you all day. I loved it, personally, but my friend kept complaining how hot it was. She doesn't have the humidity we have here in SC. And I came home a bit browner than I left, so I'm happy. And the air was so warm and dry and fresh smelling; like clothes left out to dry in the sun.
I also thought the people in general were very friendly. Gotta love that.
Oh, and can I talk about the food? My friends, knowing my love of ethnic foods, took me to this incredible thai restaurant in Plano (it's called Mangos, if you're ever in the area.) I can't even dig up words to adequately describe how delicious my curry was. The best I'd ever had. And the portions were SO HUGE. I ate leftover curry for 2 more meals. I also ate at this fantastic greek restaurant in Downtown Dallas called Antone's. Antone himself kept bringing us more of his great food, encouraging us to "Eat! Eat! Try the spinach! Do you like the hummus?" The food was homecooked and wonderful (and how I wish I had his hummus recipe), but Antone was definitely the best part. He was a riot! There were so many neat restaurants. I didn't have time to try the Lebonese one, or the Ethiopian or the Jamaican one (my friends say that one's really good. But it was closed when we tried to stop by. I've never had Jamaican before). You could plan an entire vacation around food.
Well, I could go on and on about how much fun I had and how much I loved Dallas. It was only 3 days, but they were all great. I hope all you Browncoats that are lucky enough to live in the Dallas/Plano area appreciate how lovely it is.

ZZETTA13

Hello Serenity from Texas browncoat Zzetta13. I live in Beaumont Tx (100 miles east of Houston and not near as pretty as Dallas). It's more industrialized down here, where there is a lot more tech-industry around Dallas. My brother lives in Plano though and during hurrican Rita we went to stay with him. He took me around town. Yes it is very nice up there. It's funny by the wife and I are headed for Philly this weekend (I've got a post about it in the community section if you care to see why) Thanks for the heads up on the train stuff. We are flying into Philly but we aren't going to be staying there.

Anyway enjoyed your post, see ya,Z

Serenity, I have no idea where my comment went! How bizzare!
Anyway, I said it's a shame I didn't know you'd be here. I'm just a bit north of Plano in McKinney and I could have dropped by where ever to say howdy. Deep Ellum before it was all cleaned up and perty, was my hangout back when I was still in school, lived in Plano about forever. I'm glad you liked it here! It is lovely in Dallas. (except on hot humid nights when the sewers are stinky!)
Another place that was once fun was Greenville Ave.

We did drive through Deep Ellum, but it was on accident because my friend took the wrong exit off of the highway. It did look the like the kind of place that wakes up after the sun goes down.

My brother lives in downtown Dallas. We'd go down to Deep Ellum all the time when I was there. Did you go to the Angry Dog? I love the Angry Dog. Carlos the bartender is a huge Evil Dead fan.

The first time I was in Dallas we were driving somewhere and after we had passed it, he went, "Oh, that was the grassy knoll," like it wasn't a big deal or anything. Hello? Major piece of history that I would've liked more than a second or two craning my head back to try to see. But that's brothers for you.

I suppose for a city Dallas isn't too bad, but I hate cities so I'm not a good person to judge. :)

I had hoped to be spending this week in San Antonio, but that didn't work out. Texas is a big state, it may take me awhile to see it all.

If you thought Dallas was great, you should visit Austin. :-) But I'm a little biased.
