Re-Runs versus DVDs
Thursday, January 22, 2004

Here in Canada, the Space Channel is faithfully airing Firefly episodes every week, and I'm faithfully watching them, even though I've got the DVD set. I could watch any episode, any time, commercial-free, with or without commentary (and I do ), but I'm still turning on the TV promptly at 9 on Mondays. What's that all about? I've been trying to figure it out.

I like knowing that a bunch of other people are out there somewhere, enjoying the show at the same time I am. And I like knowing that new browncoats are tuning in and getting hooked, just as I did. And watching on TV makes it seem as if the show is still alive and important.

Every time I watch it (on DVD or TV) I notice something new. The episodes are so rich in detail--there's so much to think about! This week's episode was Shindig. In the scene where River attacks the cans of food, I suddenly got it...or thought I did. I bet those cans were marked with the Blue Sun logo and that's what set her off.

Even though River's "craaaazy" (<--read in Nathan Fillion or Alan Tudyk voice ) she's not random. I think everything she does makes sense from her point of view. Actually, that's true of all the characters. When they argue, you sit there going, "Well, I see his point. Oh, and I see her point, too. Oh, and I see why he's upset about that." Every character is the hero of his or her own storyline, and the conflict happens when those storylines intersect. Just like in real life. That's great writing.

I'm very grateful to the Space channel, because it's let me get a net friend addicted (two episodes and she's hooked, baby!)

As a relative late-comer to Firefly (last spring), I'm somewhat sad that I never got to experience the week by week bonding of an episode. It's great that you're getting to do that!

HUMBLE

Your words make me all warm and fuzzy! I couldn't agree with you more, IrisAnne. You've obviously got an excellent take on Firefly. You are a true Browncoat. Keep flyin'!!

I completely agree!
I also own the DVD and if I'm home and available on Monday evenings I'll put it on also.
Yea I get the feeling others are watching along with me.
My only but is...
Watching it on DVD without the constant commercial interruption really is like watching a completely different show.
To me I seem to miss a lot when interrupted every 5 minutes for commercials.
So I hear you!

Shiny... another Canadian Browncoat.

Hey IrisAnne... I completely agree with you. In fact I was one of those Browncoats enjoying "Shindig" at the same time as you.

I had also mentioned that Space was faithfully airing, and re-airing, Firefly including the previously un-aired episodes in a previous blog. It's good to show that TV stations in The Great White North haven't forgotten Firefly.
