Browncoats are found in Unlikely Places

I went to my church's committee meeting night last night. They have a Worship Arts Ministry (WAM) committee that my sister Karen is part of and they want to do an "art share" again this year. There was an announcement in the bulletin about it, actually, that surprised me and Karen. First just the fact that it was in there, and second that it had her name instead of my name and our phone number as the contact. I got giddy for a second, figuring that since Karen's name was on it, she would be the boss of the show. That is until she says to me, "I can delegate."

So, since I'm the only one who knows how art shows work, I went to give my input and somehow ended up in charge of the advertising. I think I'm about to become a WAM member too, although that wasn't the original notion. I gotta work harder on knowing when to keep my mouth shut.

But that's not the best part. The BEST part was at the end of all this, when the name of my hometown came up in conversation. Karen and I were talking about things that had been done at our hometown church. They asked, "Where's that?" We said, "Starbuck, Minnesota."

That's when the Choir Director said, "Whenever I hear Starbuck, I think Battlestar Galactica." Which was refreshing. Usually we get, "Where the coffee comes from?"

Hearing his response, I smiled and said something like, "Yeah, my head goes there too." Then he asked, "Have you seen the new one?" and WHOOSH! Off into another 'verse of conversation that caused the other WAM members' eyes to glaze over. I think our Council rep may have even run off in abject terror.

When he started talking about how he liked that the new BSG is darker, better detailed and how the characters are so much better than the original. I got that *feeling* so I asked if he had seen Firefly and both he and his wife lit up.

"OH! That was the BEST!" he said.
"They didn't give it a chance!" she said, followed by, "We haven't seen them recently, because we've been loaning out the DVDs."

The Choir Director at my little Lutheran Church and his wife are BROWNCOATS!!! Needless to say, I did a little dance in the parking lot on the way home.

THIEFJEHAT

What a delightful little story. In my case my wife and I had just moved into our new home in a cul-de-sac and our neighbors held a "sac party" 2 months later we had been invited to. During the process of meeting folks for the first time, I overheard one of my new neighbors describe this group of people as "we're like scoobies", to which I expressed my understanding that it was a Buffy-related comment. Boom, we were off talking about Joss while our new scoobie friends stared at us with utterly no idea what we had started talking about. By the end, my new friend expressed her desire to see Firefly and I gave her my copy. She purchased her own 5 days later and my copy is now in the hands of another neighbor. I'm trying to get all the folks in my cul-de-sac to watch it before the film debuts.
