Converts... (And why am I up too late, four hours before work again?)

Converts. Yah. You know what I mean. Those guys who sit down infront of the TV with you, when you trick, coddle or force them to watch your Firefly DVDs with ya.

(I make a bet with them myself. If they can watch Serenity and not be intreguied enough to check out the next episode, I'll buy them dinner. Of the now 8 people I've done this too... I've yet to buy dinner.)

I'm up to 8 now. Not a huge number, and I didn't originally intend to keep count. But while I realize I'm preaching to the proverbial choir here, these are friends of mine. Friends who when I explain the series to them, *are not* particularly interested.

All it takes is Serenity 1 and 2. (Well ok, I do trick them into watching 2 eps without them knowing it ;)) And they're hooked.

I'm mentioning this cause on a whim, I've been searching for any word of a Serenity toyline. I work for Toys R Us, and since we have toys for virtually every other half decent sci-fi movie ever made (And more then a few horrid ones) I've been curious if we can be seeing a Blue Sun toyline before the BDM. So far I've come up dry. But what I am finding is amazing support for Firefly. You'll see someone post something like how they don't think Firefly should be considered Sci-fi (And in general, these are flamers to FF boards, which in and of itself is foolish.) But the arguements for and against are valid, and it never seems to surprise me when you eventually find that the people who don't think the series is worth anything have never seen an entire episode...

Only seen the DVD set and read the back... or at worst, read a review somewhere and made there assumptions.

Folks who can be convinced to sit down and simply watch, all come away with SOMETHING they like.

This is my theory. Not that Firefly is perfect (cause its not) but that its got a little something for everyone, and thusly is why it has such a fanbase. So I'm gonna test my theory. On the two hardest targets to convert known to man.

Parents. Specifically mine. Neither is particularly computer savy, they aren't sci-fi fans... and they're very picky about thier entertainment for different reasons. Now you have to realize just how difficult a task I've set before myself. I've been a Star Wars fan for better then 15 years. (Yah, I know, SW has been around for more then that. But I didn't see the movies til I was 8) My parents have never seen Star Wars, and though they always say they'd sit down and watch the movies with me, they never do.

And I of course mean ANH, ESB, and RoTJ... I'm not too keen on the two new episodes. So. If I can get them in one place long enough to watch Serenity, and hook em...

To quote Jayne... Well... that'll be an interesting day indeed.

I got hooked the day I saw TJ on tv, so I've been about prosletyzing for years now.

>>>Parents. Specifically mine. Neither is particularly computer savy, they aren't sci-fi fans...<<< One of my multitudinous sisters hates sci fi AND westerns, since we grew up on the westerns of the 50s and 60s that were as numerous and bad as reality shows are now, and was still a complete convert to Firefly on one viewing...and she has gone on to convert her sourpuss mother-in-law who hates everydamnthing!

This is just great storytelling. Pop the DVDs into the player, corral the fossils, and let JOss's words do their magic.

Skip Star Wars, IMHO, since folks our (your parents' and my) age (late 40s and up) just flat hate that crap in the main.

Go go go! I've "converted" 3 people now and I'm working on my 4th, 5th and 6th...I agree that each person comes away with SOMETHING they like. I think I'll have more than a few people with me in the theatre when the BDM comes out.
