I may not be that bright, but Firefly drew me on
Friday, January 14, 2005

I have to preface this by saying that until this moment, I didn't actually own Firefly. I only saw it for the first time in late October after a friend had sent me his DVDs to watch. Then when my brother asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I said Firefly! I prepared to patiently wait until Christmas, knowing that Firefly was on its way and I would be able to watch it over and over and over soon.

It started getting close to Christmas, but no package arrived. I figured that he had probably had it delivered to home, since I go home for Christmas every year. I go home, but still no package. I talked to my sister-in-law on Christmas Eve, and she said they had ordered my present a while ago and had had it shipped to Mom and Dad's address because that's where I would be. I pass a couple more days at home before I have to go back, but it never arrives. So I go back to Bozeman disappointed.

A week after Christmas my mom calls to tell me that a package from Amazon just arrived. Since I was planning on going home the next week anyway, I told her to just hang onto it rather than make them pay to have to send it down to me.

Now we're coming up on the me being stupid part. Montana got one heck of a winter storm on Wednesday and Thursday. I had planned on leaving Thursday after work, but Mom vetoed that and made me wait to come by daylight. So today I leave Bozeman to go home. It's about 160 mile drive. The roads are not the greatest, to put it mildly. About a half dozen times along the way, I say to myself, "This is ridiculous. I should turn around and go back before I end up in the ditch." But then the devil (or angel, or River) on my other shoulder reminds me that Firefly is waiting for me at home. And like a carrot dangled before the mule, the idea of watching Firefly tonight is enough to keep me going.

To make a long story short (too late!), my ferret and I made it home in one piece, and I opened my package to find that not only did my brother get me Firefly, he also got Shaun of the Dead too! This is going to be a great weekend.

Addendum:
Dad and I stayed up late last night watching "Serenity", "The Train Job", "Safe", and "Our Mrs. Reynolds". When we finally quit because it was after 2am, he just sat there for a moment and then said, "That was wonderful!" I think I have my first convert.

Of course, Firefly is great, but Shaun of the Dead is the Cutting Edge!
