TV show pitch....
Friday, December 17, 2004

Well it's all Mr Whedon's fault.

I'd given up watching TV of any kind since Northern Exposure. Then he goes and makes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly and takes TV to a new level.

Three TV shows of such quality and accesibility that he's inspired myself and two friends to try and write one of our own.

So that's where we are, just a few days shy of having a pitch ready for the BBC. It's not easy this TV writing lark. When you start of with a blank canvas the possibilities are limitless, and we all have individual ideas of our own. But we've managed to find a format that all three of us love and things have come along wonderfully.

Of course we're under no allusions. There's a long way to go, and it'll be extremely difficult to keep our original idea in tact, but at least having a completed script is better than not having a completed script.

That's the impetus. The script. That now gives us something to approach the BBC with.

So there you go.

I'll keep things updated as they develop.

UNCHARTEDOUTLAW

I really hope it "alludes" rather than illude...I'm not sure illude is even a word.

Wow - Thanks for the good luck wishes "UnchartedOutlaw" and "shw".

I'd love to tell you what the pitch is but my other 2/3rds of the writing team wouldn't allow it.

They have allowed me to mention a few things though:

*We're going for something that illudes to the supernatural, but never fully indulges in it.

*It's not another bloody detective drama.

*We've tried to make it humourous.

*Lastly, we've racked our brains coming up with unusual premises. This last point has been a real head-ache...The characters' conflicts are not about say things like:
"Look out this is going to kill you"

[Death] is too obvious a point of conflict so we've tried coming up with notions that subvert the definitive, yet maintain the drive of the drama. (Hopefully anyway)

Thanks again. :)

UNCHARTEDOUTLAW

Definitely good luck. But if you're pitching to the BBC...how about a story about a guy who travels through time and space in a phone box? It's got great potential! Could last for decades...or until the BBC does something completely stupid and shoots itself in the foot.

Oh, dangit...I left my rant mode on...good luck nevertheless!
