Binge-worthy?

How many of your favorite series do you prefer to watch as they originally air, and how many do you find are actually better when you can wait for the DVD set and binge-watch?
I was not able to see Firefly originally broadcast. If I had known, I could have taped it, but my taping largely ended with Dark Angel's end. after seeing Serenity in 2005, I finally saw Firefly in 2007 towards the end of a marathon on Sci Fi, starting with the end of Ariel. When I got the DVD set, I pretty much binge watched it, couldn't really stop.
Some current shows seem like I'd like them better if I could binge on them. Continuum seemed to work well when I binged. Due South seemed to work better when waiting a week between. Sometimes I am unable to watch certain weeks of Person of Interest, Castle, Elementary, and then the whole train has derailed.
Some parts of DVD viewing are much better - when I finally watched ER many years after it aired, I was able to skip over the ridiculous political gibberish and junk science parts to watch the decent storylines. Made me glad I never attempted to suffer through that crap on a weekly basis.
Which series do you think work better "live" or watching each newly aired episode? Why?
Which do you think work better in a DVD set, or other binge compatible viewings? Why?
Are there some that work well for parties or other group viewings?
How much does the depth of "arc" stories affect your answers?
I think Backstrom works well weekly.
I suspect Gotham would work better as binge - too many things change to keep track of from week to week, maybe missing one.
I can't tell whether Arrow would be better as binge, or not.
I wonder if SHIELD would be better as binge.

Forgot to mention that syndicated shows have similar effect. Seeing one or two episodes per day of Mentalist seems to help the continuity. L&O seems less in need of binge - the episodes are more freely interchanged, not like some soap opera.

I can't think of any show that's not better watched via binge method.
Some times , when the stories aren't directly connected, it may not be such a big deal, but I find it really does help.
I think Wonderfalls is the last DVD series I bought. I mean, what's the point anymore ? What isn't on Netflix, or OnDemand, soon will be.

So do you watch live shows - meaning those on original air dates?
There is only so much time in the day - time spent watching shows when they air means missing some binge watching of something else.

Rarely do I watch shows on first run aka 'live'. any more. Like right now, I think I'm missing the season premier of Orphan Black. Like I care. I mean, I do, but I'll catch up tomorrow. Or when ever.

But it won't always be available on those services.

I wonder if gone are the days of limited release. Once upon a time you could not obtain or watch a copy of Star Wars, for like decades it seemed. Joan Jett's I Love Rock & Roll was unavailable on CD for over 15 years, and when the vinyl copies ran out they were not resupplied. The Terminator was very hard to get for many years. I still have DVDs I would like to purchase but they are not available.
With the glut of entertainment being pushed out, I wonder how many of the really good works are being held back, and we don't even notice anymore.

Exactly. You can watch Serenity whenever you want because you possess your own copy of it and aren't dependent on the whims of Netflix and studio execs and what they decide to have in their streaming library. That's the point of maintaining your own physical media library.

I have the rare privilege of having watched Firefly 'live' from Day One and then binge watch with my son. I was hooked originally when I saw a promo on Fox - Serenity flying over a group of wild horses. That shot captured my imagination, I just had to watch. I was not disappointed.
Which way is better? With Firefly it doesn't matter, both have impact for the obvious reasons - the perfect storm of story, cast & crew, and the writing. I tend to lean towards binge watching because Fox had a tendency of interrupting the air dates (and as we later found out, the sequence of air dates). Nonetheless, this gem was well worth waiting for.

Yeah, Fringe.......best served hot and heavy, I would caution: you need patience because it unfolds or peels off like an onion. several layers, but well worth it.
Fringe refers to fringe science with a mad scientist and a determined FBI agent; it's X-Files with a different side of sci-fi.
Game of Thrones, although I wasn't as impressed with Season 5.
And I recently was turned onto Deadwood, look in the credits for a familiar name, also familiar theme music. Excellently written show, good to great characters and solid performances. Not your typical western, it reminds me somewhat of Unforgiven, a bit of revisionist style western. dirty rotten scoundrels on horses; and, at times, funny too.

Jessica Jones had a tie-in to Daredevil, and also featured Luke Cage, who gets his own series sometime next year. DD and JJ will both get second seasons at least, and there will also be Iron Fist, all leading up to a Defenders crossover series. There may be one other character I'm forgetting now, but I believe Black Panther will be in either Civil War or Infinity Wars, but not on Netflix.
Even though it's all Marvel, and some of these characters had interacted with the Avengers in the comics, they are not allowed to mention the major characters, only casually reference them, talking about the "alien attack on New York" and "the big green guy." It's similar to how only the X-Men can use the term "mutant."

The most recent show that I've found works best as a binge marathon is The Expanse. They promoted it as a 10 episode movie, and so far each ep has picked up exactly where the previous left off. I've watched the first four several times already, although the fourth will get its first broadcast tonight at 10pm EST on Syfy.
The first four were put online and On Demand immediately after the second ep ran, but I'm not sure if the rest will be available that way, so I will be watching live each Tuesday night from now until Feb 9. I haven't bought discs in quite some time, but I might make an exception for this, or else buy it through amazon or iTunes.

Been going through lots of Xfinity On Demand series via the binge approach. Some that I've watched recently include:
The Pacific - gripping & intense. Rami Malek as "Snafu" is a stand out.
Extras - very funny and really good. I want a divorce so I can marry Ashley Jensen.
Weeds - Kevin Nealon is a demented joy to behold.
Fat Actress - totally hysterical show, so why only 7 episodes?

I recently binged Altered Carbon, the most recent season of The Expanse, three seasons of Librarians, and the first half of season 4 of Rebels (although I had watched that one ep by ep first). I'm in the midst of a semi-binge of Future Man, doing 2-3 episodes at a pop.
In my experience, although any show these days is better binge-watched than not. I've been binge-watching TV for decades (before it was called binge-watching, my friends referred to it as "pulling a George," since I was well-known for watching a season over a weekend and watched Freak & Geeks in a single sitting).
As long as there is supporting continuity, the show benefit from watching episodes in close proximity, even if it's primarily episodic in nature.
In my experience, there are a few different kinds of shows that don't benefit from binge-watching:
1) Formulaic shows with only limited supporting continuity. I imagine there are some newer representatives (maybe Scorpion?) but most of these shows are older. Chris Carter, Joss Whedon, and J.J. Abrams really changed what an hour-long show looks like, but older shows can be rough. Much as I enjoy it episode by episode, a binge of, say, Remington Steele is a brutal slog, and I couldn't do two episodes of The A-Team back-to-back.
2) Comedies, especially older ones, for many of the same reasons noted above. Although they make good "background noise," a real marathon of many sitcoms becomes pretty rough unless it's done as a drinking game. The main exception is The Office (and arguably comparable shows like Parks & Rec, Community, 30 Rock, and Great News). The Office is so nuanced with character relationships that grow and evolve that it does stand up.
3) "Vote 'em off" reality TV. Even if you're watching it after the fact, the impact of the vote-off is significantly reduced if you're plowing through a bunch of them in the same night. You can even see this on the 2-hour episodes of Survivor, where often the first half is completely forgotten 15 minutes into hour 2.
4) Deep shows. There are some shows that are better when you have some time to stop and think about them. In most cases, I think maybe 2 episodes could be good (even great) but a real marathon reduces quality. The O.A. comes to mind, and I imagine that if one were binge-watching Lost without never having seen it, it might be too much.

I can watch multiple consecutive episodes of Due South and Six Million Dollar Man although I usually watch selected favorites. $6 Million did break many molds of the Episodic template.
I'm not sure if Outer Limits is considered Deep - I rarely thought so. But certainly episodically independent.

I'm not a fan of remakes for the most part, but now that almost everybody walks around with a computer in their pocket that has more power in it than the entire television network that Max Headroom was in on the show, I think it could make an excellent reboot if it were done correctly.

My brother actually met him at a convention years back and somehow ended up meeting up with him and a few of his friends to play some board game in his hotel for a few hours. My brother is way different than I am, for sure. He's got all sorts of pictures just hanging out with celeb types. I wouldn't even go up to talk to one, especially if they were sitting behind a desk charging 20 bucks for their autograph. My bro said Hatch was a great guy.
It's hard for me to rank TV shows or movies, but Battlestar is definitely in my top 5. Maybe my top 3.
War of the Worlds was awesome for its time. I watched it every week with my Dad for the whole run. I was about 9 years old and had a huge crush on Rachel Blanchard's character Debby.
The funny thing is that me and my Dad didn't really care for the second season that much when it was first on, but we had both independently binge watched it many years later without knowing we were and got to talking about it and we both said we thought the 2nd season was actually better. Strange.
I'm going to see if Max Headroom is on Kodi. If it's not I'm going to see if maybe I can buy a used DVD copy. The 20 minute youtube video I saw about the show filled me in on all of the "adult" themes that were way over my head when I saw it as a young kid. I think I'm going to love it on a rewatch since it's right up my ally of the most enjoyable types of shows and movies.

My brother actually met him at a convention years back and somehow ended up meeting up with him and a few of his friends to play some board game in his hotel for a few hours. My brother is way different than I am, for sure. He's got all sorts of pictures just hanging out with celeb types. I wouldn't even go up to talk to one, especially if they were sitting behind a desk charging 20 bucks for their autograph. My bro said Hatch was a great guy.
It's hard for me to rank TV shows or movies, but Battlestar is definitely in my top 5. Maybe my top 3.
War of the Worlds was awesome for its time. I watched it every week with my Dad for the whole run. I was about 9 years old and had a huge crush on Rachel Blanchard's character Debby.
The funny thing is that me and my Dad didn't really care for the second season that much when it was first on, but we had both independently binge watched it many years later without knowing we were and got to talking about it and we both said we thought the 2nd season was actually better. Strange.
I'm going to see if Max Headroom is on Kodi. If it's not I'm going to see if maybe I can buy a used DVD copy. The 20 minute youtube video I saw about the show filled me in on all of the "adult" themes that were way over my head when I saw it as a young kid. I think I'm going to love it on a rewatch since it's right up my ally of the most enjoyable types of shows and movies.

What I remember most about "War of the Worlds" was being upset when they lost Richard Chaves character of Colonel Paul Ironhorse. I wasn't impressed with Adrian Paul then.
Funny thing about "War of the Worlds" is that Philip Akin and Adrian Paul both went on to star in "Highlander" the tv series and that was filmed in Vancouver for a lot of its run.
I liked Max Headroom when it ran. Just quirky enough for me back then.

He went to one of those fancy movie theaters that serve food and drinks and frequently have cast reunions for old movies for Caddyshack once and ended up talking quite a bit with Cindy Morgan, who played Chevy Chase's love interest in the movie. I guess she couldn't stand him and still carries a grudge about it. I can't remember what she wrote beneath it, but as well as signing her own signature on his Caddyshack photo, she also signed Chevy's name on it and put something like "would have loved to meet you, but I'm too important". lol

I was pretty young when it was on. Maybe 5-7 years old. All I really remember were the scenes where they told jokes from inside of their lockers in a "Laugh In" style, and Barth the disgusting school chef that would grumble "I heard that" whenever one of the kids would talk about how gross he was. It was where the Nickelodeon slime started. Alanis Morsette was on it too, and I believe her song "Jagged Little Pill" was about Dave Colier (Uncle Joey on Full House). I'm assuming they met while she was doing that show and he was doing "Out of Control".
It would probably be pretty terrible to watch today, but I've always wanted to at least watch a few episodes again.

I watched the original and of course I grew up watching Lorne Greene on "Bonanza". So I was familiar with at least 1 actor on the show. Richard Hatch did do a tv movie once with Bruce Davison and they played Jan and Dean, a 60s beach music group. Not feeling the need to start a whole thread on Jessica Jones myself, I'll tack this on to 'binge ' stuff, just because I finished watching S2 on Netflix.

Don't get me wrong. I dig Jessica Jones. And I REALLY dig Krysten Ritter. Just this 2nd season was a bit on the slow side. Not as lames as Iron Fist, but not up to what I had hoped for, after such a long lay off between S1 and S2.

That's unfortunate. I was thinking that might be the case without Killgrave though. I thought of all the Marvel stuff that I've seen he was by far the most interesting villain, and possibly the most interesting character overall.
It would be hard to top that.
It's unfortunate when deaths like Killgrave happen. It's kind of like killing off Joker nearly every time he shows up in a new Batman franchise. There isn't really a deep roster for interesting Batman villians, so why kill off the major players at the end of nearly every movie? You just end up with George Clooney playing Batman and Arnie playing Mr. Freeze.
I think Killgrave was absolutely terrifying with his powers, and he could have played a much larger role in the expanded universe if he was allowed to step outside of the boundaries of Jessica Jones. Something needed to happen to him to give you closure for the season, but I feel that his death was squandering an asset for no reason.

My father despised story arc TV Shows, referred to them as Soap Operas, despite their nighttime schedule. One particular example was Dynasty.
When shows are difficult to watch each and every week without falling behind, binge watching is very conducive to following the flow of less episodic style shows, more long story arc shows.
Many shows which I did not follow largely due to the long arc facet, I can now catch on syndication.

I absolutely LOVED that show.
I even felt it ended alright, although they had planned for years to make a movie to wrap it all up and it never looked like that was going to happen. That always seemed to be a major bummer because they could have just ended the show a few episodes early, leaving off the last few of the series and it would have had a really climactic ending that would have been satisfying. The last few episodes were relatively anti-climactic.
I just noticed yesterday that they actually made the movie. I'll be damned. 
I think I'm going to re-watch the entire series before I watch it though. I'll repost here whenever I get around to that and let everyone know if it was worth the wait.
I bet with a little hair dye you can't even tell that Olyphant is any older. I wonder how the rest of the cast fared.

Last few months I've been sorta binging on BSG (this century), Good Wife, The Closer, Star Trek Voyager, Enterprise.
A new favorite show for me is Genetic Detective. Non-fiction, and about a half hour of content crammed into an hour show, quite a bit of boilerplate repetition, but I still tune in whenever I can find it.
I do have an interest in geneology, started my family tree in 1977 or so. Got it up to about 130 pages single spaced by the time I graduated in 1982.

If you've already watched The Boys, the only other comic show I would recommend is the first season of Jessica Jones if you haven't seen it.
Most comic book movies are pretty bad, but they look great compared to the TV shows. Especially stay far, far away from the CW/DC TV shows.

I typically do not finish shows, some people can watch all episodes of JJ Abrams Lost or Supernatural or some StarWars StarTrek thing but a lot of these shows rarely keep my attention for long, I guess thats why I like Firefly cut down in its prime, I notice a little less superhero stuff now at one time it looked like all tv shows were going to have Superman-ish Spider-Man type characters

Here's what people are talking about 2020 and 2021, 'Raised By Wolves' is praised as the best on the ranker website, I'm not sure I agree, I dont think its the best but it kinda draws you in I guess there is something to this story in a galactic spanning post apocalypse tale. I tried Upload and Picard but couldn't really get into them, Picard seemed the better show. if I were to chose I might return to watching Picard. I think Picard is going back to the classic Star Trek type story telling and away from the big gimmicks of explosions you seen in the J. J. Abrams movies I will probably return to watching this series.

I guess its a bit like Falling Skies or 24 or JJ Abrams Lost or a Containment thriller emergency type show but you will have to read subtitled English over the French language. Supernatural has been getting awards but this Horror Fantasy Thriller is finally coming to an end, for me it has too long a story, its on tv forever, it is too much werid drama and far too many seasons upon season for me to watch
The Mandalorian is liked by its fans, very StarWars setting I liked it as a fun thrilling escapist ride, it is a short and enjoyable watch.

Stargirl was actually pretty good. I wouldn't have watched it if it weren't for Luke Wilson, and honestly I thought it was quite novel to have a beautiful, physically fit white girl in the lead of a show that managed to check the agenda at the door. I didn't even know that all was possible in 2020 anymore.

I've tried some shows but for now I'm watching 'Squid Games' I think Netflix, very interesting at times, I'm not sure if its trash television or an interesting commentary on the rat race in life.
The great thing about it is the pace, the subtle music, the acting and how the story is allowed unfold.
It's maybe like if you mixed American Wipeout the Japanese gameshow Takeshi's Castle and mix it with a Horror movie, I don't know how to describe it. While it sounds a bit crazy it is an 'Emotional Series' with Drama with good writing good dialogue and plot in its own way, it is neww and getting massively hyped by people watching it now, an overnight sensation, and maybe rightfully so.
I'm not sure if the real bad guy is the cartoonish style masked villian or maybe its just a commentary on life itself in Asia.
Theer is a similar show in Japan called 'Alice in Borderland' but I Do Not recommend it, while the Japanese show has a similar plot and I think is based on some video game thing or Japanese horror suspense comicbook manga series I just found the Japan show very empty, nihilistic maybe and just gore or tension for the sake of gore and tension so, there was something stupid about it so I stopped watch the Japan show. This one from South Korea it keeps you glued in and guessing, while it might be inspired by other ideas this S.Korean is a new very interesting take on the idea Gameshow Horror Survivor idea.
The S.Korea film and tv always impressed me, a smaller population compared to the United States of America and they do have their own powerful film culture, their movies do good in cinema their DVD's for tv drama sell even while they are next to 2 powerhouse giant economies and cultures of China and Japan, the S.Korea tv is strong it stands on its own and film is great.

I guess it keeps you going because its like a mystery who-did-it? or maybe its just a trainwreck you can not turn away from? All kinds want to join the game, some have their own issues, some are cold, some are helpful, some are evil, there are gangsters, math teachers, some are manual labor workers, married couples, some are failed gambling investors, people from all walks of South Korean life.
Imagine you mixed a Survivor American TV series island plot about a game show...sounds silly...then you mixed it with a Scifi Horror murder game and then put the show some weird place in Asia with South Korean culture and that's what the series is ...but a Survival Horror Game Show but its not scifi...not really

I'm not sure if this has a 'trashy' side to it, if is B-movie level trash tv, I'm not sure if it has any art message or meaning behind maybe it is trash rubbish but the actors are cool and the show? but it is entertaining in its own way,its South Korean style, passionate acting, well shot camerawork, great pace. I guess it does have social commentary, Squid Game’s backdrop is South Korea’s present-day, the difficulty of life, wealth inequality and the addictions of the mind, how some people hit the bottom.
I think its on Neflix but I'm sure it could possibly be found somehwre...some shows are around places dailmotion, youtube, a vimeo channel, you can find a show if you know the right place to look.
The dubbed version is ok, the dubbing for the main actor is good but I'm swicthing over to Korean every once in a while for episodes, I guess I don't mind the subs and enjoy the sound of the Korean language, I would happily watch either dubbed or subtitled. I've been hearing that Prey was pretty decent. And despite it's female lead with minority status, she's not a magical Mary Sue who is perfect in every way. Those who are quick to label everything woke have come out and said that this movie isn't woke trash. Assuming she either lives to the end, or at least takes out the Predator before she died like Arnold did, I'm hoping I can avoid spoilers until I see it and find out how a girl that looks to weigh about 100 lbs soaking wet manages to pull it off without poorly written woke Plot Armor.
It's a shame they put out so many terrible Predator movies over the years that they didn't feel that the first decent one they've made since Predator II was worthy of a theatrical release. Especially right now when the new releases are so bleh and it would have had a great chance of coming in at least 2nd place this weekend. They could have probably made some decent money.
They probably should have done a dual theatrical/streaming release. Or are we done doing that now? Maybe that's a bad financial model?

Scifi isn't really as big as it used to be in the 90s and early 2000s.
I tried 'The Witcher' for a while quit and have not been able to get back into it. I might try The Legend of Vox Machina another animation Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Oni Thunder God's Talea and kids show I assume Daniel Spellbound. not sure about Moonhaven, there is some overseas stuff from South Korea 'Glitch' for example, Germany, Spain Feria: The Darkest Light or Feria La luz más oscura a Spanish fantasy thriller television series and Poland 'Cracow Monsters'. I wrote about FlixPatrol which is good to see 'buzz' you find shows you might never see for example The Thaw was trending on FlixPatrol but it didn't rank high 6.8/10 imdb 50% RottenTomatoes I sometimes take reviews with a pinch of salt but many other ranked it Low-ish with poor feedback...so I decided it was not worth my time. I had mentioned the South Korea and Japan shows earlier, they say the Japanese show 'Alice in Borderland' came before the South Korean but I found it kinda empty, soulless and nihilistic, it starts with good action and tension but the Japan actors a bit weird, acting at times so over the top it made the show stupid. Star Trek Prodigy is ok-ish, Maybe I will try an animated cartoon, Simpsons, Recess, South Park, Avatar The Last Airbender, Samurai Jack, Justice League, Spider-Man, X-Men, Sponge Bob, they were ok and kinda Binge Worthy before all this SJW stuff.
Animation standards in the West are terible these days. Most people in the West no longer watch Western animation and seem to watch Asian toons these days, its even destorying the video game market with 'Gamergate' politics.

Streaming might collapse if they can not make entertrainment people will just watch a Nature Documentry or re-runs of old shows for free on u tube or daily motion or watch power slap on rumble and other social media sites. I think mini-series will come back like during the recession of the 70s and 1980s
People like the show Yellowstone, another series 'The Last Thing He Told Me' could be ok, the British not sure region maybe England or Wales made 'The Gallows Pole' some liek the Dead Ringers miniseries but maybe its mostly South Korean and German shows that are watchable?
