I was waiting for word from Humble as to whether he's comin' back before I posted the casting call. I'm guessing that, since it's been a week, he's probably not.

Geezer, do you want to carry Mal in a more permanent capacity, or would you prefer that we open the floor to a casting call?

(Personally, I'm kind of interested in seeing if it's possible to pull off a love triangle where two of the three involved are you! )

I'll give the dual roleplay a try for a while (unless Humble can come back. It's really his spot). It might be fun to see if I (Thorne) can make me (Mal) jealous enough to fight for Inara.

Now, if the chance appears for some quality time between Thorne and Inara, should he 'take her in a manly fashion' or just have a civilized tea ceremony and conversation?...and then he and Inara tease Mal about it?

Hmm. Guess I'll have to wait and see how it turns out.

Good morning all! I'm having a lot of fun reading everything that's going on. The kiss, River/Slight, Niska... good stuff. But would someone please tell me where Damon is... I lost him somehow. Is he in the infirmery?

ahhhh I can't wait to see :) since Thorne is NOT employed by Mal, he could certainly take her in whatever fashion he wished, as long as she was willin' *to be determined*

don't want the rest of the RP'ers thinking she's a space-whore!

Though some genteel and not-so-genteel flirting and courting would not go amiss :) we'll see what crops up!

P.S DAMON: I thought he was around the infirmary..when Kaylee gets finished kissin' and I get done flirtin', we'll pick him up and fix 'em

Thank you, Ciara, that would be most appreciated. Though I'm not sure what there is to fix. Simon patched him up after cutting him open... though he seemed to be in a bit of a rush so he may not have done an A job.
But I know where he is now, and that was my main concern ^_^ thanks again.

Hey all! Just got a message from Boomer's husband (really nice, BTW). She's having computer difficulties at home and may not be able to post today, but should be able to by tomorrow afternoon. (Her computer probably shorted when Simon and Kaylee kissed! ) We should probably not do tons with Kaylee until she can make it back on.

On a related note, I am, as noted on the tag, having severe difficulty focusing. No focus means work doesn't get done. This particular work not getting done means no Zoe/Wash postings. This makes me want to cry.

I think the main problem is that I'm having severe Firefly withdrawal....

Man, you crashed from your happy place after the Jacksonville shindig pretty fast, Astri. Only cure for Firefly withdrawal is to tell regular TV to go hang and watch the DVD. I read fanfics I've saved too - helps keep my head in. Hard to do when you're at work. I'm home today, which is a good thing since we're getting buried under "snow showers." That sound like an oxymoron to anyone else?

Infirmary
1 bed/chair, Counter that can be pressed into service as a bed.

I posted a quickie and left a place for Boomer and I to finish the scene with Kaylee and Simon.
We'll have to IM or she can send me her move to be inserted there in my post.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I'm getting ready to leave work right now, but should be able to take care of it a little later this evening. We'll switch from Acts (threads) to Scenes, is that the idea? With everything that's happened so far being Act I?

Let me know, and I'll do the new post when I get home.

SO here is the whole post with the revalant part bold'd.

RAVENWHITEWINGs POST
Slight stares at Book, then takes a deep breath.
"Look, Shepard, I have no problem whatsoever in sending you to your God. Hell, I'd love to send him a message or two that way. But. That girl is in plenty of danger. Right now, there's something growing inside of her, a failsafe that was designed in all of us, Thorne among them. I barely found out, as it was. But if you think she's lost her mind now, she will descend into a whole new level of madness. I won't be able to tell her brother how to help unless I can look her in the eye. So do what you will. But believe me when I say, I'm here to help her."
Slight pauses, enough to show what he means. "I'm not here to help anyone else."

Keeping in mind that Mal won't be to happy once he finds out Thorne's gotten the better of him. Downright crotchity, in fact.

FYI, folks, Rowan is also proficient in bo staff techniques. She's not a big fan of projectile weapons, but she can fire one accurately if the occaision calls for it. I just keep thinking how fun it would be for someone who doesn't know Niska on sight to take him down - and a girl no less. not to mention it could put her in Mal's good graces...finally. He might even remember her name

Ciara - You could have taken the punch line if you'd wanted. Expect me to set Mal up for all sort of double entendres. That which does not kill him makes him stronger.

Channain- I think Rowan taking Niska down would be neat. Her acting all scared and air-head then picking up a convenient pipe and beating the stuffing out of him while quoting Sun Tzu from The Art of War.

Okay, looks like it's time for me to do a little catch up. I should have Zoe's and Wash's moves posted shortly. (I'm going to have to back up a bit to make sure I catch everything, so it's going to be a long post.) Once I have that finished, I'll go ahead and post the newest RP thread.

Before I do, we need to figure out whether we're going to continue the current naming/numbering scheme or not. Maniac put forth the idea of calling the previous threads 'scenes,' and heading the story into a second 'act.' I believe CapnRahn also suggested that we perhaps use a 'Part 1' vs 'Part 2'... In either case, the next thread would be the beginning of the 2nd 'act' or 'part.' I think either of these will suffice, what do y'all think?

We should probably also come up with a loose outline for the remainder of the story arc for this RP. (Otherwise, this could drag on forever, with no real conclusion... )

One final idea... We should probably check the Green Room Chat and the 'Community' links before posting, to see who all is on to make it easier to integrate scenes/posts.

I believe CapnRahn's "Mechanics of RPing Workshop" thread
( http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=17&t=3640) will explore these ideas in more fully, but it's a good idea to get started talking about them before we start another new thread. Can everyone's system handle the current thread for a little bit longer while we discuss this in the OOC?

*off to post for Zoe and Wash*

Yes my system can handel it and starting a second part sounds good. I vote for calling them part 1 and 2 cuz there are usually more that 2 acts in a play or script or movie.
Tallking about/planning the end of the RP sounds like a great idea. Will we do that here or at the link you just gave us from CapnRahn?

The planning we'll probably do here. I believe CapnRahn's thread will be for giving the basics of how something like this would be structured in the future. Kind of like a "how to" manual for beginning RPers.

OK... cool

What I said was in this vein:

Let's continue with the current naming till we finish this 'episode' ...

There are only 2 ACTs left (9 & 10) and the coda of this 2 part episode (AiGR). Since we sorta already have started the Episode type Thread Titles.

Gives us time to suss out just what we should switch to and THEN impilment it in the next Episode.

On that note ... we should start throwing out Episode Arcs ideas for the players/actors to chaw on before we start the next Episode.

So,good, bad, ulgy?

Any other ideas floatin' in yer gray matter(s)?

EDIT
Astri, yep close ... the workshop is to toss around general RP ideas and refine them.

Now, the 'Gunrunners' (unoffical name I have given to our RP troupe) may not choose to utilize the ideas presented in the RpMechWS thread.

I'd like to see AiG wrapped up neatly, but have concerns about doing it in two more acts, considering we don't even have the guns on board yet.

I see that we have several threads that need to be, if not brought to conclusion, at least brought to a satisfactory stopping point.

We have the gunrunning, which we should probably close out.

There's the apparent Niska in Simon's brain, which could continue for a while.

There's the River, Thorne, Slight, Damon interaction, which could go either way.

Also the Thorne, Mal, Inara triangle, that I enjoy, whichever fellow wins.

Kaylee apparently has some secret about Serenity. Plus she and Simon are finally becoming an item.

Then there's Rowan, who seems to have an interesting story in there somewhere.

Would it be worthwhile to keep this entire crew for another episode or two? Would it be interesting to have each character, or grouping of characters (Zoe/Wash, Simon/Niska/Kaylee, Thorne/Inara/Mal, River/Slight/Damon/Simon/Thorne,
Rowan/?, Book/?, give direction to an act or story arc?

I have no idea how RP is supposed to work, so I may be just babbling. I enjoy the surprises in AiG so far, but sometimes things get a bit too hectic. Maybe if we had an Idea where we were heading, even if just for an act (baselined at 100 posts, perhaps) we'd get to a conclusion sometime. Or maybe we don't want to reach an end, and just sort of stream-of-consciousness off into the distance.

Damn sake(rice wine, not 'for goodness...').

I agree. These are my concerns as well.

Quote:

Closing out of this one is pretty necessary to end the episode at any point.

Quote:

There's the apparent Niska in Simon's brain, which could continue for a while.

Not to mention Niska currently on the loose, running around the ship. Niska on the loose needs to be resolved; Niska in Simon's head could go on... indefinitely, I'm guessing.

Quote:

Not really sure what to do with this, since it really only just started. I'd hate to leave it hanging as completely open as it is now; it needs SOME kind of resolution, if only temporary.

Quote:

Also the Thorne, Mal, Inara triangle, that I enjoy, whichever fellow wins.

I'm guessing Thorne could end up being a recurring character that gets under Mal's skin where Inara's concerned (a la Atherton Wing in Shindig).

Quote:

Kaylee apparently has some secret about Serenity. Plus she and Simon are finally becoming an item.

The secret could be an ongoing thing, or could be something resolved now - maybe related to whatever Early did to sabotage the ship in the very beginning. Personally, I think the Simon/Kaylee interaction would continue throughout several episodes, the way their tension does now...

Quote:

I feel the same about this as the emerging Blue Sun stuff that's coming up... Not really sure what to do with this, since it really only just started. I'd hate to leave it hanging as completely open as it is now; it needs SOME kind of resolution, if only temporary.

I agree that there are times when there is so much going on (and usually all at once) that things get a bit jumbled, but I like the interesting directions that the story has taken. In a live pen and paper RPG, we'd have a GM/Director who already had an idea of the story arc and some set obstacles along the way, but that would be somewhat fluid and malleable to the characters' (and players') actions/interactions. Since we don't have that structure set up here, it's more difficult to figure out some means of wrapping the story/episode to everyone's satisfaction. (We don't have a GM that can say, "Great! You've accomplished ____! Game over!")

My assumption was that when we got to New Hikido, dropped off the cargo, and got paid would be then end of this particular episode, but that was at the beginning. With some of the interesting twists and turns we've had, it's harder to see how/if this story would conclude.

Squee: Episode vs. Act... we're still working that out. Until recently, we were thinking this RP would be the equivalent of one

Until recently, we were thinking this RP would be the equivalent of one TV episode of Firefly; however, it's become quite intricate and it may have to be more than one "episode" to get everything wrapped up to our satisfaction. A TV episode has a teaser, the opening credits, 4 or 5 'acts' (I think), and a coda that shows the resolution (think Mal & Inara in the cargo bay at the very end of Shindig). We've obviously FAR surpassed that, so if we were thinking in terms of episode, we'd have to claim this as a two- (or now three) parter.

We may be limiting ourselves by trying to control this RP as a single encapsulated episode, which in JW format, is teaser, 4 acts and the coda. If we think of this as a miniseries instead, I think it will help in the general structure. Besides, as has previously been stated, we've already reached the edge of a single two-hour episode.

Back in the day, miniseries meant a full-week event of up to four two-hour episodes (North & South comes to mind). That may sound like a lot, but the way we're going, I think we could easily utilize that kind of format.

Just a little more food for thought.

Yep, we have 2 ACTS - 9&10 (6 to 10 Minutes apiece- TV wise) and CODA (anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes)left in a 2 parter.

The # of acts in an episode depends on how many commercial slots sell.

A single American produced 1 hour episode, with commercials edited out, is usually 38 to 46 minutes in length.

The mini-series idea has MUCHO merit ... lets see if we can streamline and finish this 2 part EPISODE {AiGR} THEN impliment a Miniseries ...

In my opinion, Niska is destined to escape. He is too good of a villian and information source to dispose of yet.

The guns ... I forgot where they are! Anyhoo, that would be the only MAIN ARC to close out before the CODA.

The rest of the character, rerlationship and other ARCs can be carried over to the mini-series.

SEGUE TO...
SO, if everyone like Channain's idea: What plot ideas for the MAJOR arc(s) for the mini-series do we want to toss around?

I agree that Niska is too important to kill off just yet, but I think that it would be interesting to introduce a new villian if we are going to continue this as a mini series.
I just got a picture in my head of the Firefly crew having to join forces with Niska to 'defeat' a greater threat. Desperate times... well its just a thought, lemme know what you guys think.
Oh, and thanks for the explanation, Astriana, the discussion makes a lot more sense now
I think the Simon/Niska thing could go on for a while, and I like the lov triange with Inara, Thorne and Mal. And the Kaylee/Simon thing is definately a yes in my vote
The River/Slight/Thorne thing doesn't have any long term development that I can see, it looks like something that could be wraped up easily, depending on what we want to do with the rest of the story.
Well, that's all I have for now... I'm off for school, so I'll be back in a couple hours.

Another suggestion I would have is to move the "Last Time on Firefly" info on a different thread. It's a lot of great information to bring a newbie up to speed, but it's becoming a huge "first page" that promises to be giganimous once all the synopses are posted.

I would say list the previous act (or whatever we end up calling them) thread and synopses in the most current thread. Then put in the thread leading to the "Outline" or somesuch of all the previous acts. Then list the Gunrunners - that is to say, US - and the usual disclaimers. Like so:

RP - "Adventures in Gunrunning" Act 8

Act 7

address for act 7 thread

Previously on Firefly
Prior acts and greenrooms for character discussion and development
address for Outline thread

Players
Directors
Disclaimers, et al.
Definitions
Guidelines

Seems like a lot of work. And since it is my idea, I'd be happy to set it up. Also GULP if the new director needs any assistance, I'd be happy to do whatever I can.

Shiny idea, Channain! This is actually something I meant to do once all the synopses were written. (Guess I'll have to step up the synopses-writing efforts! )

Also, since Channain brought up the "new director"... It seems that we're seeing the need for some direction in the RP at this point. I would like to offer my own self to be said director. CapnRahn has offered to assist (and so has Channain, apparently! ), and between us, we can solve a lot of the questions we've been having recently, as well as those we've had from the beginning. I will post more on these things a bit later (probably this evening after work).

What say ye'all?

Oh, in answer to Channain's riddle:

Anyway, I can appreciate that the thread is getting slow. Channain and I are working on getting the new thread together. But it may not be until tomorrow. Bear with us for a little while longer...

Looks like we'll be using Channain's new & improved format for the alpha post of the thread, and will probably look at wrapping this particular RP within the next 2 acts (and possibly coda), before moving into the miniseries. We're still working out the kinks.

Edit: Yay, finally got Zoe and Wash caught up a bit on the action!

Since we don't have anyone playing Niska right now, I suppose whoever wants to interact with him can just have him do whatever is needed to move their story along. It's not like he's a major character (except maybe in Simon's head). More of a Mcguffin.

Not trying to be all directorish, but I still like the idea of Rowan catching Niska. Maybe saving Jayne's bacon at the same time. This would give her street cred with the crew, plus set up an interesting Rowan/Jayne interaction.

McGuffin - a Plot Enabling Device, i.e. a device or plot element that is deliberately placed to catch the viewer's attention and/or drive the logic of the plot, but which actually serves no further purpose - More specifically, it is usually a mysterious package or superweapon or something that everyone in the story is chasing.

Submitted for your approval. Alternate resolution for the "Niska in Simon's head" problem.

As SIMON seals the recaptured NISKA back in the cryo-box, MAL nods to THORNE, who removes a small blackjack from his coat pocket and expertly clips SIMON behind the ear. SIMON collapses, and MAL and THORNE lift him to the examination table and strap him down.

SIMON struggles to consciousness and fights wildly against the straps for a few moments. Calming, he begins to speak, but in an eastern european accent.

"Ah. You think you have me, but I will own you yet. Your pain will be a work of art. Ha ha ha."

As SIMON continues to cackle maniacly, his head rotates 720 degrees in a counterclockwise direction. boils and pustules break out on his face. A blast of evil-smelling slime fountains from his mouth to the ceiling. The entire room shakes.

Suddenly, everything is still. Shepherd BOOK stands in the door. He is wearing full Shepherd regalia and carrying a censor that is producing pungent smoke. He speaks:

"Exorcizo te, omnis spiritus immunde, in nomine Dei Patris omnipotentis, et in noimine Jesu Christi Filii ejus, Domini et Judicis nosti...noshty...nasty...Oh, Heck, Plan B."

Approching the writhing SIMON, BOOK strikes him on the forehead with the palm of his hand, one, two, three times, chanting "Out, you Devil! Out, you Satan! Out, you mother-f**king son-of-a-bitch!

With superhuman strength, SIMON breaks the arm restraints and sits bolt upright. From out of the air, a voice is heard, crying "I'm melting...melting...melting." The voice fades and the room brightens.

SIMON awakes, as if from some vile dream, and notices he is strapped to the table. "KAYLEE, where are you? Were we playing 'The Mental Patient and the Naughty Nurse' again?"

MAL Smiles. Everything is back to normal.

LOL! You guys slay me. I'm on for a few minutes before I head to work (when I'll be on again). Since we have so many storylines to resolve so we can close this "episode" and move on to the miniseries, I have been working on way to get this closed out. I will be e-mailing everyone individually to work out storylines/resolutions, so as not to ruin any surprises, character issues, and back stories that the players have worked out and the other characters/players don't know about yet. I'm thinking I should be able to make the first GM post sometime later today/tonight and we can work from there.

Seriously, there have been two parodies written here in the past. One was the Browncoat Chronicles, which took various browncoats (that is to say, us) into an odyssey searching for true fandom...at least I think that's what it was about. It was removed from the site without being finished *ahem*

The other was a sort of Mad Magazine take on the first episode, substituting browncoats (again, us) for the Firefly crew et al and other characters. The "ship" was an 18-wheeler.

Not saying it's been done - saying it would definitely be accepted...hint, nudge, wink.

That's one of the dangers of not having a director - we'll get that straightened out, too.

As for Niska being in Simon's head, I think it's a fine plot device - plus we've been playing it for a bit now, it'd be a little difficult to eliminate. I'd keep it and see what we can do with it for the miniseries.

Astrianna and Channain
Realized we needed to go ahead and make the ACT 9 thread ... when Channain gets the new 'Previously On ...' format done I'll replace the alpha post.

So ...
Astriana = Director
Channain = Asstiant Director
CapnRahn = Keeper of Continunity/Head Writer

Sound good?

You forgot one officer

Serenity's Son= Head slack poster, malcontent, part time comic relief.

Sorry folks but Real Life is hitting me kind of hard right now, working 14 hour days trying to move the restaurant forward ( thus making my bonus bigger... That BMW Z4 3.0 is calling my name rather loudly now every day I drive past the lot). I will keep trying to post as frequently as possible, please remember there may be a time delay for Jaynes reactions to things so leave space open. Now I better get postin' or I'm going to wind up being as un-needed as Tito...

Bout knocked ME outta my chair, I was laughing so hard...

Heh, meebe I can get ahold of Adam Balwin's agent and see if he would make YER commercial!

For some reason yours makes me think of the 'commercial' for Umbrella Corporation's product 'Regenerate' - which is actually a trailer for "Resident Evil - Apocalypse".

This could be come a habit ... funky commercials after the ACT closer/cliffhanger post.

Ah commercial TV!

hummmmm ... A commercial for Book's order?

Maybe we could make it Excorsist X , like Friday the 13 X, It can be in the future in space and simon could spit up Mothers Milk, spin his head around and scream Niksa, Niksa! Oh wait then it would be as bad as the Jason in space thing....

Or Kaylee for Strawberries.

GUNRUNNERS ...PLEASE besure to take a peek at the last few posts on ACT 8 before you post in ACT 9

Yer humble COC/HR {interim}
{ baaaaad acronym!!!}
Cap'n Rahn

P.S.: BTW, I am going to use this ID {DragonflyDirector} to post things that are more the mechanics of the RP or if I am playing a 'non-player' character: like I am doing with Niska at the end of ACT 8.

I'll use my CAPNRAHN ID to only post as SIMON here on the GunRunner's RP.

Over in Act 9 DFD wrote:...WASH will find out there is a(re) Fed ship(s) that just flew into the outer marker of the Serenity's radar.

whoop whoop whoop ... and Serenity MUST lift off ASAP...or be shot at by 3 Federal Marshal fighters. {like the one the 'cops' had in "The Message"}

Getting chased by Feds is gonna make picking up the cargo pretty difficult. Wash couldn't shake one ship in atmo in "The Message", so losing three without leaving Hera just doesn't seem reasonable. We're into Act 9 of "Adventures in Gunrunning", and have yet to obtain any guns to run. Perhaps we could say good riddance to Niska (although Thorne really wanted to carve him up, just a little), jump to the Valley, load the cargo, maybe have Kaylee/Rowan mount the laser cannon while everyone else is loading, and then have the five-0 show up for an exciting pursuit/dogfight.

I'm really just trying to look out for Thorne's interest, since his reason d'etre is delivering the guns.

Capn, I think your creating all manner of confusion for yourself. Man in your medicated condition needs to be careful with that.

Maybe we should come up with an acronym like GMC (GameMaster Comment) or DRC (Director Comment) rather than different IDs?

Geezer,
I stated they needed to lift off, not break atmo. I just cnsidered that WASH was agood enough pilot to get the Serenity to the pickup point.

Astriana was going to chat with eack individual and see what they wanted to 'wrap' up in the next 300 posts/3 threads.

{note: around 100 posts per therad X 3 (Acts 9, 10 and Coda}

Channain,
This is my method for working on DF. I don't expect anybody to pick up my type of formtting oe ID use.

I probably won't be making very many comments at all with the new ID.

DOULBLE DOH!!!
I htouhgt you meant, from the chat, you would not have the alpha post ready till the 6th. My very frelled misunderstanding!

Sorry about the new thread format mixup of mine! ... it wasn't really touched on in the 'story breaking ' session.

Actually it was. Astriana asked if I could and at first I said no, then changed my mind. It turned out to be a quick and easy thing this morning. I had originally volunteered to do it in the first place when I suggested breaking the full outline into a different thread in order to make the Alpha Thread (the actual RP thread) a little bit shorter.

Does that make sense?

Hee, with so many threads, soon we are going to need our own section ... GunRunners Room, LOL - like the VIP lounges at Airports...

Channain: Good idea! Let's use the acronym DRC (Director's Comment) in the RP to denote some direction/input from the directors. (I already created a new ID - FrauDirektor - but I'll probably only use it for whole posts, not just commentary.)

Geezer: The bit about the Feds is a bit like crime & politics (go figure), situation is always...fluid. We can work that bit out a little better after I have the individual convo’s with everyone about how they see their characters going.

All: I'll start a new OOC thread later this afternoon.
