One of my friends would go on and on about some show "Firefly". She finally convinced me to watch it last weekend. I now understand why she insisted I had to watch it. I've been missing out all this time, but I shall miss out no longer.

So, lard or baby oil? I prefer the pork fat, as it makes a much more satisfyingly moist *thwap!* when the initiate is paddled, with gobbets of the partially body heat-melted goo spattering the walls of the Sanctum Sanctorum. Gives the place the homey aroma of fresh-made bacon, and offsets the smell of stale beer (and other fluids) that the Sanctum normally sports; much better than baby oil, which tends to be cloyingly sweet. But, I'm respectful of the preferences of others...

P.P.S.
Delta Upsilon, UofH, '76-'78. Odd mix of jocks and heads. More like Animal House than was good for any of us. We never paddled our female guests (at least not as a rule), although we did do the lard and newspapers. What a mess.

I never did the sorority thing ( too busy spending my time with Julia, gods I miss her, we did everything together, but she left me). I did however practically live at the TKE house. I remember my first toga party...there was beer everywhere...and sheets of all colors and patterns...it was beautiful. *sniff* I used to work the beer coffin...passing out the beast to all the revelers. I'm so glad I CAN remember those days.

BTW, 'I give you a ten' and 'you pointed your toes' were gymnastics references, not intended to imply you were male. I got the distinct impression you were female from the outset. The question is not whether your gearbox is stick or automatic, but whether your drive train is still protected by the manufacturer's warranty...

If you're in your in your 20's - early 30's, it's probably Chinese takeaway (I really fancy some moo goo gai pan). If you're over 21, Tsingtao's; otherwise, green tea.

If you're over the age of 37 (i.e., within 10 of my 46 years), supper will be grilled rib eye and cocktail shrimp, sauteed mushrooms, angel hair pasta and broccoli florets. (Although, if the lady would prefer the fish or the Chinese, I'm amenable to whatever she wishes.) A unpretentious red would go down nicely; any suggestions?

With Chinese food, I strongly recommend Tsingtao ( http://www.tsingtaobeer.com/index.htm), rather than mixed beverages. It's a much better counterpoint to the flavors and textures, IMO.

I am happily married for the past 17 years, so no guilt; although, it's a distinct pleasure to make your acquaintance. You could say I have a 72 year rule.

I do like to play on occasion, however, and no subject is out of bounds, so long as it is handled in a courtly fashion. As a result, I will occasionally flatter or tease a female, playfully; but, I am not seeking anything other than conversation and intellectual stimulation.

Actually, I'm generally more sober and serious than I have been in this thread. While I like to 'play', for me it's more like a sherbet that cleanses the intellectual palate between main courses, than a meal itself. I'm motivated by philosophical, anthropological and artistic musings, more so than party games (i.e., I'm an older-than-my-years, morose, stick in the mud). I can talk Firefly characters until you can't stand it anymore; but I'm not good for very long with floating tree boats...

So, you're a film student? ...Or is this only an avocation at this point? I know very little about digital photography; just basically competent.

Junior at The local Career Center's Media Tech program. Best in the United States working with $150,000 worth of equipment everyday. And I can even sign some of it out for class. I plan on majoring in film after Graduation.

At school I'm operating on a Dell. Your standard two screen flat panel. Has a ton of hard drive disk space, etc because editing really takes a toll on your computer. Not sure on the specific model though.

My dad's the Head Technocrat at his workplace. Long hours, tired alot but he's souped up my old computer for my brother's gaming obsession on there. You two seem to have that aspect in common. Poor guy. He's a lost cause. Firefly didn't "do anything ground breaking or special like Farscape" did. Breaks a heart it does.

And as for fan films: PG-13 rating at most. Sorry to dissapoint. We have alot of those younger and usually forgotten Browncoats that need their way to get a Firefly fix.

The school thing sounds like a great opportunity. So, you're a junior in high school, if I'm hearing correctly? How are your other grades? Do you have any idea where you'd like to go for college: Local? Left Coast? How do your parents feel about you going away to college?

GPA and SATs... Oh, and 'learning stuff', too (almost forgot). Chasing a dream is like driving a car: It'll take you anywhere you want to go, but only if you do all the menial stuff like changing the oil, checking the coolant and tire pressures. Attention to the peripheral details that are the foundation of your dream will keep your ride ticking along smoothly. Neglect the 'boring' subjects at your own peril.

Your Dad liked Farscape better than Firefly?! Sounds like grounds for emancipation, to me.

Yes sir. Ickle Junior right here. I only take one other class at my high school since I'm gone almost all day. Concepts of Geometry. *shudders* I'm a writer myself but I'm better in Geometry this time around. And I'm getting a... A- in English at the moment.

Local college, live at home. I see no appeal in dishing out a ton of cash and living with some strangers on the other side of the country when I can drive half an hour to the local University. They're even building a nice big dorm for all us Media Tech people come 2006. So I'll be there with probably my whole class *shrug* Still saving money to go the the L.A. Film Institute if it suits my fancy.

No idea what my GPA is and I'm taking the SATs a second time this summer. My first score was a... 1320, but I know I can do better.

Well if chasing my dreams is like driving a car I need to get a new dream cause my car is dead *kicks the rusty bucket and watches as it gives a lurch and the exhaust pipe falls out*

I'm so far from rich that I pick which utilities to pay each month. I don't upgrade every year cause that'd be silly. Though I guess I prolly would if I could. And for your information mister , I do what's inside computers. I've built them from the ground up. I've taken them apart. I've even done a little coding on occasion. Never been a huge gamer...got the console for that...or I could go to my dad's house he loves gaming....or Jake’s computer is pretty kickin, I could use his. I just prefer looking at the cute little apple and not thinking. It's blissful.

P.P.S. fifth grade science fair...I built a computer...this was back in the day mind you...none of this go to a store and by a case and pick components…oh no, I started with a board and added the chips and wiring and soldering and I lost. It was really more of a calculator...but I did it.

I'm just guessing, but it seems to me you must know your space, in order to properly utilize it. Maybe when you get to be a bigshot director like Joss, you can get somebody else to worry about lighting and camera angles; but, starting out in your career, you should know how to do all that stuff yourself. You could probably just wing it, if you've got the eye for it, but it couldn't possibly hurt to bulwark such talent within a geometrically sound framework.

And an A- is still a 4.0; my kids' report cards have their current GPA tabulated at the bottom. ...Care for another piece of fish? Or are you ready for dessert? Since it's only a virtual dessert, I figured on Boston Cream Pie, split two ways, with milk; but we can have whatever you'd prefer...

That all sounds good to me. So, you're on good terms with your parents (even tho' your Dad doesn't like Firefly: You're a saint). Being a 'commuter' at college has many positives, and few -- if any -- negatives, from a learning standpoint. There's always time to learn how to live on your own after the formal phase of your education is over (for the time being).

So, do you live in L.A. or some other city where there are real opportunities for you to practice your calling? Continuing your education with other students from your current Media Tech program seems like a pretty sweet deal, too. I'd guess y'all have a good working relationship and that you have formed some partnerships. Having those partnerships evolve together at the next level can be a powerful thing. I'd just say, try to work new people into your experiences as well. Getting along with a rotation of new people is an immutable feature of adult life; you can't let Life's departures and arrivals throw you.

(See 'GPA', above). That's amazing! I made a 1320 on my SATs, back in '76! No foolin'! At that time it was one point per question, 750 English and 750 Math, for a possible total of 1500. Do they still do it the same way?

I almost aced the English portion (720-something); not nearly so good on the Math (doing the math, just under 600, *yelp!*). ...There were a couple of hiccups in my high school career, which I barely managed to survive. Still, I could've gone to any college in Texas I wanted to with that score (with the possible exception of Rice). It ain't entirely about the score, it's about the combination of the score

Hope you don't mind me passing on the Cream Pie. I made some excellent Chocolate Fudge Torte and you're more than welcome to have as many pieces as you'd like. :)

Oops on the ickle junior. I spend alot of time in the Harry Potter Fandom, as well as living with my English grandmother. You tend to pick up some 'Britiscims' (and I really don't think I spelled that right).

Sound, lighting, all very simple things (the hard part is trying not to burn your whole hand on those lights. Ouch) There's obviously a geometric element, bouncing lights off of reflective surfaces for your fill, etc. Concepts is a nice overview for the less mathematically inclined crowd and so I'm not struggling as bad as I was in regular Geometry.

And I get two report cards from my two schools. Only my high school card has my GPA on it, but it's inaccurate because I only have one class on there. As long as I'm not failing I'm content.

As for my parents, we have a very healthy relationship. I was the loner in my Sociology class when the school made us do this excersize on how to get along with your parents. I love my parents! I love the enviroment I live in. Sure we have our spats, but it's just a moment in time. They've put up with more stuff than I have and they deserve my respect. That's a given.

I wouldn't mind living on my own and stuff, but that involves getting a job and paying rent/house payment/whichever. If I live at home, I can save my money and buy myself a nice place of my own instead of a dinky apartment and share it with Jorge the Rat King or something.

I live in Northeastern Ohio. Kent State University has an excellant Media Program and it's close to home. They also have their own radio station which I'd like to get involved with as well.

They have the new SAT's this year but I think it's still graded the same. They got rid of the... boy, I can't remember what they're called. Blank is to Blank like Blank is to Blank. The word is on the tips of my fingers.

My parents help buy me a car? Not a reality, sadly. I have to pay for my car and insurance which emptied out much needed money. My parents are marked as owners of the car so they have control over it so they can take it away and excersize restrictions. Not that I mind since I only drive it to the movies and to the Career Center.

Ah, Moya has nothing on Serenity. I always find that there's a certain beauty and poetry to something built with your hands than a living being. To be able to build something from different parts and to create such a lovely vessel. Browncoat until I die.

I just recently upgraded to a GeForce 6600 GT Pro, without having to upgrade all the inner workings of my self-built, AMD Barton-core XP2500+ (333 Mhz), 512 MB dual-channel matched Kensington RAM, RAID (5 HDDs), Gigabyte NVidia-based GA-7N400 Pro2 mobo (coming up on 2 years old), in a Lian Li aluminum case.

I included all that gobbledygook to illustrate my point about choices. And when ever I upgrade my box, I trickle down the old components to wife and kids. When the not-more-than 4 year old components come out the back end of this process, I buy a cheap box and start constructing a unit which will be donated to a local school, sans OS or other software. And they are gobsmacked and grateful.

You can't do that with a Mac. You can only ride your little pony to death (and beyond, for some), and then donate it as a doorstop or boat anchor to some charity who will give you the stink eye, if they know anything about computers. How're they supposed to run anything on it?...

Still, Mac must have some real user magic going for it, for Apple to retain that rabid 5% of the desktop market (*waits 30 seconds* ...4%). Kinda like AOL

They're two great amusements that go great together; but, can only be assayed as a duet under this one special circumstance.

I won't smoke a cigar indoors. The smoke, while pleasant (to me) as you're smoking it, is dreadful once gone stale, and it really hangs on to your carpets, drapes, and furniture fabrics.

So, cigar-smoking is an outdoor sport -- especially since someone complained loudly enough to have it banned in sports bars, here -- while movies are an indoor entertainment. ...Unless you've got a drive-in theater in your locality.

Patronize your local drive-in. If you haven't tried it, you might find you like it...

The BDM on the drive in screen... now that would be nice. Turn up the volume really loud and sit on the roof of the van and watch as traffic stops on the freeway behind as everyone is entranced with this wonderful example of master cinemetography and immedietly go buy tickets as soon as possible.

But until then I enjoy projecting my dvds onto a large white piece of plywood in my backyard.

Actually Dad just brought the projector home from work. For my Birthday we watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I hope to do something similar this year.

I saw some cheap projectors at Sam's Club pricing at around $90. But I'm saving up so why buy one when he can bring one in from work?

Sure you can move in. I'm moving into my editing room in the basement so sure. Hope you like purple.

Where did you find the $90 projector? The only one on SamsclubdotCom was circa $1189 (still too high for such a specialty item) and Internet search didn't find the same item for less than $1122.

From that base model, digital-capable projectors jump to $2K, then rapidly progress up to $5,000 range (where you'll find several options) and top out around $29,000.

I think you've underestimated your father's contribution. Like I said, he has access to a lot of really nice toys; you're a lucky girl...

Our drive-in shows 3 first-run movies per screen for $10 a carload in the month of April. College kids packed 10 deep in the bed of several pickups (parking their separate cars in a nearby field) make for a nostalgic evening, for me. The old beetle who works the ticket booth just fumes (speaking of purple), and the truckloads of kids ignore him and keep laughing at whatever it is that can make kids so jovial in this day and age.

I then make some infuriatingly neutral comment about the kids today to the ticket-taker, who's probably 15-20 years older than myself, and am rewarded by his under-the-breath muttering about them abusing the $10 policy. "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that?" "Nothing. Enjoy your show, sir." Heh-heh...

Wow, double amazing! I also scored 1320 on my SATs, back in 1980 - 650 Verbal, 670 Math - on 5 hours sleep and a touch of a hangover. Some friends and I decided to "buck the system" and have a party the night before.

Come on, please. We always like new faces, sharing your writing is good, and at the moment I’m the only Firefly fan. These people deserve to be converted but I’m not good at making that kind of a pitch.

That’s Kent State as in the Kent State, right? I think there only is the one, but it is often good to double check.

When I smoked my cigars, it was always outdoors. But I had never considered the drive-in movies...hmm, sounds like fun!

And the kids can get in free if you hide them in the trunk, but some people could take issue with that!

Kent State? Kent State is my arch rival! I went to the University of Akron. Not Kent Read, Kent Write, Kent State!!!!!! Agh!!!

And good old UA also has a media program and a radio station. I actually started off as a communications major. I swithced to advertising though. Business is more up my alley and advertising allows me to still be creative with whatever I do.

But seriously, even if you go to my arch rival in terms of universities, a college experience, no matter at what school, is well worth it.

I wonder if it's just in Ohio where in high school you bascilly have a "Kent State Day". Almost every year there's one and someone who was there comes in and talks about it. In 10th grade my algebra teacher talked about her experience there. Her roommate was one of the students who was killed. It was such a horrible thing that happened, but I always wondered outside of Ohio, do people talk about it?
