You are a very silly person, T. I don't respect anybody who feels that they have all of the answers and it is their job to "enlighten" anybody else. This is the mode you operate under 24/7. You're just spreading the truth. You're just doing what is right. "You should HATE anyone who doesn't agree with my version of the truth..."

You sound like an evangelist. I want no part of your cult.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

You insult me.
I tried for a bit to enlighten T, but it was hopeless, a lost cause.
Which makes his post even funnier.
When you cease to even attempt to enlighten your fellow human, you end hope.

Why would I be excluded from posting in my thread. It is you and Jack that are not of a persuasion that I invited here. You must be to stupid to understood that so here you are. Oh well

You said as much that you fully expected non-Democrats to post here first, and were surprised that they didn't. It was your intention from the beginning. You've also laughably kept up with the story that you're not a bleeding heart liberal too, which makes it even funnier.

Feel free to post whatever you want at any other site and I swear on a stack of bibles that I will not follow you there.

No dummy, again you expose your reading comprehension skills as being on a third grade level. That meant I expected trolls to start trolling the thread immediately. It started around the 8th post.

This is my thread. This is my first post. I am reposting it to show that trolls troll regardless of how obvious it is.

Then there are those trolls who have long signatures, that at times don't make any sense. Other times it is a cut and pasted post of someone else's words of wisdom. I believe this is done because of penis envy. Apparently they feel inadequate.

McFarland said that the December 29 declaration was designed to get the incoming president to make rash tweet

Have you noticed the change in direction Trumps supporters are taking. Going back to the elections it's been stated by Trump and all his staff, that they have had no contact with the russians. Now it's we did, many contacts, but we didn't break the law.

The Senate bill was so hastily drafted that it contains important provisions — most significantly around the corporate alternative minimum tax — that GOP leaders seem to genuinely want to scrap. So they really will have to write another bill and pass it again, and while the odds are very good that they'll succeed, those odds drop a lot if Democrat Doug Jones rather than Roy Moore replaces Alabama Senator Luther Strange.

With Strange holding the seat, there are 52 GOP senators (plus Vice President Mike Pence), so they can handle the defection of two senators and still pass a bill. If it's Jones instead, they can only handle one defection. And we already know that Bob Corker has decided he objects to the scale of the borrowing involved.

Operating with zero margin for error on such a large and complex bill is dangerous, because it means any single senator can credibly threaten to derail the whole thing unless he gets his pet provisions.

Republicans need Roy Moore to pass their tax bill. Starting today Moore is once again a good Republican.

Until today, Republicans could say that, officially at least, they have repudiated Roy Moore’s noxious behavior, which goes far beyond molesting teenage girls. Not anymore:

President Trump on Monday strongly endorsed Roy S. Moore, the Republican nominee for a United States Senate seat here, prompting the Republican National Committee to restore its support for a candidate accused of sexual misconduct against teenage girls.

Mr. Trump’s endorsement and the party’s reversal hours later came a day after Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, had stepped back from his earlier criticism of Mr. Moore.

The Senate Tax Bill's corporate alternative minimum tax, explained
www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/12/7/16742046/senate-tax-bill-cor
porate-amt

This is a separate tax calculation under current law, used to make sure that businesses are forced to pay at least a base level of federal taxes and can’t totally avoid taxes by taking various deductions and credits. Few businesses pay it currently, because their regular rate is usually higher than the AMT rate, which works out to about 20 percent.

The Senate bill, like the House bill, originally repealed it entirely while slashing the regular corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent. But Senate Republicans, as they tinkered with their tax plan just hours before they put it up for a vote, stuck the corporate AMT back in at the last minute to make sure the bill didn’t raise the federal deficit too much.

At first it looked like a comparatively minimal provision, about $40 billion in revenue over 10 years, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation’s quick-hit analysis, in the context of a $1 trillion corporate tax cut.

But over the past few days, policy experts, lobbyists, and the business community have come to believe the stakes are much bigger. Senate Republicans may have accidentally created this new tax system where many or even most businesses would end up paying the AMT — and would lose many prized tax breaks.

The corporate AMT problem in the Senate tax bill

The problem is that the current AMT rate is about the same as the new corporate rate that Republicans want to institute. Under the Senate bill, businesses were supposed to be able to have the new 20 percent rate, but then also take advantage of tax credits and deductions to drive their tax burden even lower.

But if the AMT remains instead of being repealed, then businesses largely wouldn’t get their effective tax rate any lower than that. The AMT rate is usually substantially lower than the regular rate. But under the Senate bill, the AMT and the new corporate rate would be about the same: 20 percent. Companies would no longer be able to take advantage of tax breaks for research and development and the like. The whole point of the AMT is to eliminate deductions.

“Basically everyone would pay it,” one lobbyist tracking the tax bill told me, adding for emphasis that fixing it would be the No. 1 and No. 2 priority for Republicans now.

Based on some rough estimates, under the Senate tax bill the corporate AMT would bring in $300 billion or more over 10 years, substantially eating into the $1 trillion tax cut for businesses that Republicans thought they were passing.

The AMT issue doesn’t create any immediate political problems, perhaps, but it could drag out the debate for a House/Senate version of the tax bill. Republicans can’t really afford to lose any of the 51 senators who voted for the plan. If support in the Senate does waver, the AMT issue would probably make it impossible for Republicans to take a backup plan and have the House just pass the Senate bill.

Those montages of Obama stutters, sputters, speech gaffes are hilarious. Trump cannot rank up with the Ebonics-in-Chief gaffemaster.

Some people don't seem to realize that Trump on his worst day is not in the same league or depths as Obama on his Mo Betta Bestest Day. Even Trump on a day of being dead is fresh air compared to Bobo.

Trump's approval rating jumps to 45 percent, highest since September/ Dec 6, 2017, 8:03 AM

I think one needs to be careful about what one accepts as a fact. I've been looking at approval ratings now and again, and I didn't notice an unusual, sudden drop recently. So I went looking for an up to date graph of compiled poll ratings over time ... https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/ http://news.gallup.com/poll/203198/presidential-approval-ratings-donal
d-trump.aspx
And I didn't find any significant, new, noteworthy drop in approval. It's not that he's doing well, but there doesn't seem to be anything catastrophic recently.

rumpism-never-existed

“Making America Great Again” became a sort of Rorschach test in 2016. Some voters looked at “Trumpism” and saw a means of getting better health care, or better trade deals, or keeping their jobs. Some even looked at Trump and saw a pro-LGBTQ candidate in the same man evangelical Christians viewed as a hero in waiting. His opponents worried about the potential power of Trump’s populist appeal, too. David Frum wrote in the Atlantic earlier this year that a populist agenda — massive spending on infrastructure, combined with massive tax cuts and a heavily restrictionist immigration policy and economic protectionism — would ensure Trump a second term in office.

But Trump’s own “Trumpism” seemed to die a rapid death when Trump entered office. While doing markedly little abroad to earn his campaign reputation as a foreign policy “dove,” President Trump has supported a markedly unpopular health care policy and a tax bill aligned with long-standing GOP priorities while doing very little on trade. As Trump has jostled with journalists and black athletes on Twitter, the long-promised massive infrastructure investment has yet to take place, NAFTA remains intact, and China has yet to be named a currency manipulator. (And, of course, the wall remains unbuilt.)

The “Trumpism” of the 2016 presidential campaign was thus largely imaginary, a selling point rather than an overarching policy.

This is the reason why so many GOP members of Congress have voted with Trump in 2017: Not because they are supporting a Trumpian agenda, but because Trump has largely governed as a pretty standard conservative Republican. While conservative priorities — like deregulation and nominating conservative judges — have been more or less successfully brought to fruition, the last remaining fragment of “Trumpism” appears to be Donald Trump’s exceedingly pugnacious Twitter feed.

No wonder that Trump’s popularity with Independents, wanting “Trumpism” as an alternative to Paul Ryan-esque conservatism, has dropped precipitously. Trump had 42 percent job approval ratings from independents in January. That number has dropped to 32 percent, a number President George W. Bush didn’t reach until 2005.

“Trumpism” wasn’t an ideology. It was a means to an end, the promises one makes when trying to win an election . . .

Because we both benefit enormously, Trump and myself are 100% supportive of the GOP's tax bill, but GOP lawmakers know the midterm election landscape looks bad because of that bill and few other moves they tried to make.

At this point, nobody seems to deny that Republicans are facing a big political problem in 2018.

McKay Coppins has an Atlantic piece titled "The Republican Nightmare is Just Beginning." www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/12/alabama-and-2018/548327/

Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns have a New York Times piece titled "Alabama Loss Exposes Republican Fissures Amid a Democratic Surge." www.nytimes.com/2017/12/13/us/alabama-senate-republican-divisions-demo

And in Politico, Tim Alberta and Rachael Bade say Paul Ryan is looking to step down. www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/12/14/paul-ryan-retire-speaker-re
ady-leave-washington-216103

If you know these journalists' track records, you'll know these aren't armchair analysts. What Coppins and Martin and Alberta and Burns and Bade are telling us is that Republicans on the Hill are aware that the midterm landscape looks bad for the GOP.

Yet amazingly, the very same Republicans who are worried that they have become unpopular and are set to lose the election due to their unpopularity are currently putting all their energy behind passing an unpopular tax bill.

And this unpopularity, it should be noted, is no kind of surprise. Back in September, Pew found that by a 52-24 margin, voters favored higher corporate taxes, not lower. And by a 43-24 margin, voters favored higher taxes on the rich, not lower.

I congratulate them on their willingness to follow their convictions rather than the polls.

But it would have been totally possible to write a bill that featured revenue-neutral corporate tax reform, an estate tax cut, and a meaningful tax cut for the middle class. Such a bill would have moved the ball forward on some key conservative objectives, while also hewing to the broad contours of public opinion. Some red-state Democrats might even have voted for it.

Instead, they served up a giant corporate tax cut, plus an estate tax cut, plus some other tax cuts for rich people, and a middle-class tax cut that is both small and merely temporary.

There is more about stuff the GOP is doing that it shouldn't if it wants to win in 2018 at www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/12/15/16781952/republican-tax-bil

I was on TV yesterday as The Secret Santa giving away hundred dollar bills. There is no rest for Santa because I have two bags of cash for today, but that's not really the way to run a country. For Christmas ask the GOP for a minimum wage increase to $20/hour. That will be great for the GOP's election chances in 2018.

Support for Trump is closely linked to racial resentment, defined as “a moral feeling that blacks violate such traditional American values as individualism and self-reliance.”

Trump made all sorts of racist comments — Mexican immigrants are criminals and rapists, ban all Muslim entering the US, a judge should recuse himself from a case because he's Mexican, and deploying dog whistles about “law and order.”

This is not just incidental to Trump. It's at the core of his political success.

Voters’ measures of sexism and racism correlated much more closely with support for Trump than economic dissatisfaction. See page 16 of http://people.umass.edu/schaffne/schaffner_et_al_IDC_conference.pdf for the graph. Looking at the graphs, there were racists that didn't vote for Trump, but the more racist a voter was, the more likely they voted for Trump.

If people who strongly identified as white were told that nonwhite groups will outnumber white people in 2042, they became more likely to support Trump.
http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1368430216677304

When Trump supporters found out that blacks, not just whites, were allowed into housing assistance programs, they expressed higher levels of anger that some people receive government assistance and were more likely to say that individuals who receive assistance are to blame for their situation.

The more racist a person is, the more likely they voted for Trump.

Instead of casting aspersions on close to 50% of the population, maybe you should look to the 'democratic' party to clean house. Hillary ALSO had historic net negative ratings going into the election. The 'democratic' party ran a weak candidate. She was not Saint Hillary, despite your misplaced faith. That was something I pointed out to you repeatedly during the campaign. It's not like any of this was a deep secret. But you steadfastly ignored it completely.

Now at the time I assumed that despite her net negatives and the voluminous baggage she was dragging around, Hillary was going to win anyway. But that's not what happened. The 'democratic' party's blatantly poor choice cost the election.

And what vile things are you telling yourself about the democrats who stayed home and cost Hillary the election? Are you imputing evil motivations to them as well? Or are you giving them a pass because they're democrats?

You've allowed the 'democratic' party's tactical error to poison your thinking about large numbers of people.

Instead of braising in your own obsessive bile, you could acknowledge what went wrong, learn from it, and move on.

Registered Voters Who Stayed Home Probably Cost Clinton The Election

Registered voters who didn’t vote on Election Day in November were more Democratic-leaning than the registered voters who turned out, according to a post-election poll from SurveyMonkey, shared with FiveThirtyEight. In fact, Donald Trump probably would have lost to Hillary Clinton had Republican- and Democratic-leaning registered voters cast ballots at equal rates.

And 50% of the population is less than average, so what is your point, 1kiki?

Republicans swear it never happened: “We have lost the South for a generation,” President Lyndon B. Johnson, from Texas, told an aide after he signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Funny how a prediction that was supposedly never spoken still happened in Texas despite GOP denials.

I discovered that Texans were racist from direct experience of Texans being racist. 1kiki, you do realize that racists can peacefully work with other races but still hate their guts and let out that hate in the privacy of the voting booth?

For decades the Republicans have completely controlled Texas and it has no connection to 21st Century national politics or the Clintons. The takeover is because white Texans are the majority and overwhelmingly racist. All you have to do to know this about Texas, if you are me, is listen to Republicans talk in private. All their talk is "Obama is a nigger from Kenya" and "Hillary is a bitch".

1kiki, just keep telling yourself that the GOP took over Texas because Democrats are awful. The truth is the GOP took Texas because white Texans are who they are. There is really no way for the Democratic Party to fix that, other than to stomp blacks into the ground (think Texas immediately after the end of Reconstruction).

Maybe Democrats could improve their position in Houston by expanding flood control. Republicans have refused for decades to pay to prevent flooding like during Hurricane Harvey. But then Democrats have to make the argument that 4.5 million people spending $61 billion for flood control is a good investment to prevent $180 billion in future damage. That argument won't work if the Texans only believe the $61 billion cost and won't believe that there will ever be another Harvey. Many people in Houston were not damaged and they believe their fair share of the cost to prevent future damage ought to be zero, which is a classic Republican position.

Here are the graphs you think are so damning.

A bit more than 1/3 of people who are the least sexist voted for Trump. A bit more than 1/3 of people who are the least racist voted for Trump. That's a big chunk of people who voted for Trump who are the opposite of racist or sexist. And one third of people who are the MOST racist or sexist didn't vote for Trump.

Meanwhile, the numbers about how Clinton lost are clear. Democrats who had previously voted for Obama, who are clearly not racist, stayed home. If they'd liked their candidate Hillary better, they might have voted. But they didn't. Hillary drove away voters who would otherwise have voted 'd'. That's how states that - let me point this out again, are CLEARLY unbiased enough to have voted for Obama - flipped and voted for Trump.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/20/opinion/sunday/the-democrats-real-t
urnout-problem

In counties where Trump won at least 70 percent of the vote, the number of votes cast rose 2.9 percent versus 2012. Trump’s pugnacious message evidently stirred people who hadn’t voted in the past. By comparison, in counties where Clinton won at least 70 percent, the vote count was 1.7 percent lower this year.
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/voter-turnout-2016-elections
the President-elect’s leap from long-shot candidate to the most powerful political position in the world may have happened in part because of apathy toward Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, especially among the Democratic base

That's the reality. Democrats stayed home.

1kiki, I'm not buying the premise that the white majority are rational; I've seen too many white Republican Texans make ruinous private decisions unrelated to politics. If a majority of Americans were rational (they are not) and they also disliked their government then at every state and local election (specifically excluding Presidential) rational Americans would do what this guy says he will do: “The only thing the government does is screw the working people,” says Scott, a Trump voter from Georgia contacted by email, who asked that his last name not be published. He says he’ll do everything he can to vote Republicans out of power in 2018. “What is the next step, short of armed insurrection?”

Americans say they dislike politics, but the one-third of Americans who actually vote keep voting for familiar state and local politicians, returning them to office again and again. That is not a sensible long-term decision for people who say they dislike the government in general.

More power to you though, voting all the Republicans out of power in 2018 with your near-meaningless vote.

Presidentially speaking, at least... even if I voted for Clinton in Indiana, she lost by so many I might as well voted for Daffy Duck.

Except for very local elections, I ALWAYS vote against whoever is currently in office. I also take the time to vote against any current judges being reinstated as well. There are some local guys and gals that have done alright by me though, so I vote for them in the little elections.

Most people can't punish a politician for lying to them about his true intentions because it is too much effort for most people to keep track of the politician's promises versus his self-serving actions once in office. The politician spends thousands of hours being devious and crafty and the voter spends a hundred seconds thinking about it before returning the same guy to the same office as before. Here is how that works in real life:

https://theintercept.com/2017/12/16/hard-times-in-trump-country/

Jamie Stewart voted for Donald Trump, but she thinks the president is a “jackass.” She doesn’t really love to talk about what he’s doing or why she voted for him. “They should take his phone away from him,” she says. “He posts stupid shit all the time.”

Stewart works as a customer service manager at Walmart — though not enough hours to receive benefits or health insurance from her employer. She is raising her 10-year-old autistic son, Wyatt, mostly alone.

In a series of interviews that stretched over a year, Stewart was ambivalent when pressed about the president’s accomplishments or any promises he might have kept. “I don’t really pay attention,” she says. “I don’t have time to give a shit.”

Since Trump astonished himself and the world on election night last year, observers have scrambled to figure out people like Stewart, Middle America’s “white working class.” Why did they vote as they did? And were they going to do it again?

“Economic anxiety” quickly became the default explanation — which, as some have since pointed out, doesn’t account for the economic anxiety of nonwhites who didn’t vote for Trump or consistent support for the president among whites across class and income. “This is not a working-class coalition,” The Atlantic’s Adam Serwer wrote in a detailed analysis of the vote. “It is a nationalist one.” Those who argued that the anxiety was more racial than economic called Trump’s election a “whitelash” and a “temper tantrum.” Others saw it as “political nihilism,” “the revenge of the forgotten class.”

Stewart’s views offer a glimpse into a community that might think of itself as being far removed from the country’s politics, but in fact, lies at their very core.

Stewart said she had no illusions, when she voted for Trump, that things would get better. “Trump came in, promised West Virginia bigger and better things,” she said. “Something so bad, you can’t make great overnight.” Today, she doesn’t regret her decision, nor does she try to justify it or apologize for it. “It just seemed like the best choice,” she says. “Better than Hillary, that’s what everybody was saying, so that’s what we went with. A lot of my family was just like, put anybody in that office other than that bitch.

Not much I can disagree with in that article. I like how even though they mentioned that some called it a "whitelash", the more likely explanation is "political nihilism". Her closing thoughts on the matter pretty much sum up my own.

I'm not picking on her, especially since she didn't write the article, but she is not a manager at Walmart. They don't have part time managers. She may be a team lead or department head, which pays a piddly sum more than the average peon, but she's not a manager if she's part time. If she were management, she'd be salaried and likely expected to put in around 50-55 hours a week. Probably not something she'd be able to do, given that she's the mother of an autistic child and it sounds like she's not married.

Knowing how the average retailer treats their employees, they likely make her do managerial tasks while she is there part

So anyway, it's pretty obvious the democrats have lost touch with their populist roots in their exuberant support of demographic transitions.

What message should the 'democrats' bring to us, the audience and consumer?

This is just a sign that wittingly or unwittingly, Second is an excellent student of the MSM and their constant manipulation of facts and statistics to suit their own narrative.

Remember when "Less than 50% of Americans" could have been effected by the Equifax data breech?

Later on, it was found that a few more million people were admitted to:

Well... there are currently 73.8 Million children in the US in 2017. And they don't count.

https://www.childstats.gov/americaschildren/tables/pop1.asp

And there are 323.1 million people in the US in 2016.

(Google search result and answer for "how many people in the us today")

And 45 Million Americans don't have a credit score.

Quote:

One in 10 American consumers has no credit history, according to a study released Tuesday by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. (Tweet This)

The research found that about 26 million American adults have no histories with national credit reporting agencies such as Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. In addition to those so-called credit invisibles, an additional 19 million have credit reports that are so limited or out of date that they are unscorable. In other words, 45 million American consumers are living without credit scores.

https://www.cnbc.com/2015/05/05/credit-invisible-26-million-have-no-cr
edit-score.html

So let's not, for the moment, even consider illegals living here who don't have credit, simply because that could skew too many numbers too many ways.

(See what I did there, MSM!!!!???? I erred on the side of caution instead of linking to various claims that are aren't very solid.... SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT DOING WHEN YOU CONSTANTLY CHOOSE TO SHOEHORN HACK-JOB JOURNALISM IN THERE WHEN IT SERVES TO MAKE YOUR POINT.

Even though I personally believe this variable would greatly benefit my position, it will not be included at all here).

If we throw out that variable, and also any others that I'm currently not considering that could do nothing but further the numbers in the desired direction of the point I'm making, this is what we are left with:

1. People in America: 323.1 million

2. People in America, minus children under 18 who have no credit: 249.3 Million

3. People in America, minus children and those without credit or who's credit histories are so limited or out of date they are unscorable): 204.3 Million.

So, of the 204.3 Million people who (presumably) have credit (based off of these remedial stats), 145.5 Million of them were affected by the Equifax data breech, or just over 71% of us.

Did the MSM lie to us? Or are they just fucking stupid?

One can only speculate.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

SIDE NOTE: I love cnbc's laughable math here. From the article about 45 million people without credit scores:

The story is, when somebody says "the one-third of Americans who actually vote ", they're implying that 2/3rds of Americans choose not to vote, which is a lie.

I've seen both sides do this when it suits them.

My example with the Equifax breech was to show that even though the media made it sound as if less than half the people who had credit cards were potentially victims of identity theft, the true number was at least in the low 70%, if not much greater.

Are you aware that Ted Cruz could now be President, if only? The voters who actually made Trump President number only 14,015,993 and they voted in the Primary. Such a small percent of Americans made the big decision that was ratified in the general election. Ted would be that man had he been more willing than Trump to tell tall tales.

When 138,846,571 voted in the general election after Hillary and Trump won the primaries, there wasn't much choice between either a not-yet-indicted criminal on the FBI's wanted list or a loudmouth liar. Most of those 138,846,571 let somebody else in the primary make the single most important decision of 2016.

Because apparently, the voters in the 'democratic' primaries, and the voters in the general election, and those who chose to stay home, weren't making actual choices. They were merely ratifying the republican primaries.

That seems to be the point you're making, SECOND.

In any case, SECOND, your claim that 1/3 of Americans vote is proven false.

White college grads' distaste for Trump hurt GOP in 2017. Will they flip control of Congress to Democrats in 2018?

White college graduates in America’s suburbs have turned hard against Republicans in elections around the country and threaten to upend the party’s control of Congress in the 2018 midterm elections.

Put off by Donald Trump’s presidency, they have been shunning Republicans in congressional and state legislative contests. Their support was crucial in electing Democrats as governor in Virginia and U.S. senator in conservative Alabama.

Republican hopes for keeping control of the U.S. Senate next year will hinge on affluent, mainly white suburbs like Summerlin, Nev., where Trump’s unpopularity is weighing on GOP Sen. Dean Heller in his run for reelection.

If Hillary had Won
http://rall.com/2017/12/26/if-hillary-clinton-had-won

When George W. Bush was president, there wasn’t one morning I didn’t regret that Al Gore wasn’t there instead. Gore wouldn’t have invaded Iraq. He might not have gone into Afghanistan either. Unlike pretty much every other president, he cared about the environment.

There isn’t a single moment I miss President Hillary Clinton, though. Trump is a disaster, a real piece of crap. But everyone knows it. Because Trump is so loud and stupid and cruel and greedy and corrupt, all liberals and not a few conservatives clearly discern the true nature of his administration, and of the system itself.

If Hillary Clinton were president, the left would still be just as asleep as it was between 2008 and 2016. First woman president! Aren’t we just the best.

Meanwhile, the drones fire their missiles and U.S. troops and spooks prop up tyrants, and the filthy rich rake in their loot.

Trump gives us clarity. That is no small thing.

Time, energy, and money are limited. Opportunity costs are real, and that’s particularly true in a White House as unfocused, understaffed, and ill-managed as this one.

One thing the Trump administration didn’t do and the price we pay for it:

In 2016, the most recent year for which we have data, a record 63,000 Americans died from drug overdoses — and two-thirds (and possibly more) of those deaths were opioid-related. To put that in perspective, that’s more Americans than died from HIV/AIDS in the worst year of the plague, more Americans than die annually from motor accidents or gun violence. If current trends continue, opioids could kill 650,000 over the next decade.

This is a crisis that needs not just money, but focus, leadership, and creativity. Progress is possible — Vermont’s success has proven that. The federal government could be scaling up Vermont’s program; it could be throwing its vast scientific and public health resources into research and support; it could be spending real money on a race-to-the-top program to fund, study, and expand promising state and local responses.

Instead, capital — both financial and political — that could have gone toward solving the opioid epidemic was plowed into undermining the Affordable Care Act and funneling trillions in tax cuts to corporations. Trump eventually declared a state of emergency over opioid crisis, but didn’t even ask for new funding to fight it. According to a member of his own opioid commission, he’s been “all talk and no follow-through.”

Senior Senate Republican says Russia probe must continue ‘without political influence’

The special counsel investigation of links between Russia and President Trump's 2016 election campaign should continue without interference in 2018, despite calls from some Trump administration allies and Republican lawmakers to shut it down, a prominent Republican senator said on Sunday.

Lindsey Graham, who serves on the Senate armed forces and judiciary committees, said Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Mueller needs to carry on with his Russia investigation without political interference.

"This investigation will go forward. It will be an investigation conducted without political influence," Graham said on CBS's Face the Nation news program.

Steve Bannon, White House chief strategist, paced the West Wing, openly dispensing odds on Donald Trump’s chances of surviving in office.

Bannon gave Trump a probability of a third that he might limp to the finish line because of Democratic incompetence; a third that he would be pushed from office under the 25th amendment on grounds of mental incapability; and a third that he would be impeached.

That a man who was for many months Trump’s right-hand man would brazenly give out such doom-laden predictions is remarkable enough. But letting the world know of it via Michael Wolff’s book could make it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Bannon may already be cooperating with Mueller for all we know. He has no incentive to cover up for Trump, or his family members.

Trump may try to belittle Bannon’s involvement with his campaign and subsequent time in the White House, scoffing that he had “little to do with our historic victory”, but few will buy that.

Bannon was an insider in the campaign at the highest level, and in the White House all the way to August 2017. He was talking to the president constantly – I can’t imagine Trump not confiding in him, including over the Russia inquiry.

I'm going to laugh because Trump proved that he is stone cold crazy. He has just insured that Wolff’s book will be a bestseller by foolishly saying he is suing to block publication. You know how that fucking jackass is about "suing", but then not actually suing.

The problem for Trump is that contract suits have to allege economic damage. They have to allege a breach of a promise, and then you have to show the breach of that promise caused the plaintiff to suffer some economic damage — and you have to prove it with certainty. It would be impossible, plausibly, to show that any particular criticism of Trump cost him.

Trump can't prove any actual damages.

Trump’s attempt to silence a book made it a bestseller instead.

Yesterday Trump’s lawyer sent Wolff and his publisher a cease and desist order to stop the release of the book. Despite — indeed, perhaps because of — Trump’s efforts to undermine Fire and Fury, the book is on course to be a bonafide bestseller.

Wolff’s book has been resting comfortably at the number one spot on Amazon’s overall bestselling books list yesterday and today.

In publishing, Trump’s denunciation may prove even more lucrative than an endorsement from the Midas of book sales, US talk show host, Oprah Winfrey.

Michael Wolff’s new book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, could have repercussions far beyond United States borders. Foreign governments have been struggling for the past year to negotiate with the Trump administration. Now some of their representatives say the excerpts they’re read so far confirm their worst fears about the White House’s erratic decision making.

“It does look like a total mess,” said Jorge Guajardo, the former Mexican ambassador to China who now advises companies and governments in DC. “Nobody knows who is in charge of what,” said Guajardo. Foreign ministers visiting Washington struggle to find counterparts with any decision-making authority and “at the end of the day they all end up in the White House — and even there they can’t get what they agreed to,” he said.

Latin American leaders have been visiting DC since Trump became president, “assuming institutions work,” Guajardo said. But the message the book drives home is that “it doesn’t matter who you talk to or what they agree to. It is irrelevant.”

So far, China’s Communist Party government has crafted perhaps the most concrete strategy for “handling” the Trump administration — seizing the opportunities it creates to advance China’s role on the international stage, while sloughing off previous Western demands that China become more democratic, and trying to appeal to the Trump family clan.

As other governments realize the opportunity that the chaos in the Trump White House creates, expect America to get left even farther behind.

Faustian Bargain on the Potomac
www.nytimes.com/2018/01/05/opinion/faust-on-the-potomac.html

Paul Krugman JAN. 5, 2018

I haven’t yet read Wolff’s book – do I really have to? — but the basic outlines of his story have long been familiar and uncontroversial to anyone with open eyes. Trump is morally and intellectually incapable of being president. He has also exploited his office for personal gain, obstructed justice, and colluded with a hostile foreign power. Everyone who doesn’t get their news from Fox has basically known this for a while, although Wolff helps focus our minds on the subject.

It seems to me that that the real news now is the way Republicans in Congress are dealing with this national nightmare: rather than distancing themselves from Trump, they’re doubling down on their support and, in particular, on their efforts to cover for his defects and crimes. Remember when Paul Ryan was the Serious, Honest Conservative? (He never really was, but that was his public image.) Now he’s backing Devin Nunes in his efforts to help the Trump coverup.

As Brian Beutler says, Republicans have become the Grand Obstruction Party. Why?

The answer, I think, is that the cynical bargain that has been the basis of Republican strategy since Reagan has now turned into a moral trap. And as far as we can tell, no elected Republican – not one – has the strength of character to even attempt an escape.

The cynical bargain I’m talking about, of course, was the decision to exploit racism to advance a right-wing economic agenda. Talk about welfare queens driving Cadillacs, then slash income taxes. Do Willie Horton, then undermine antitrust. Tout your law and order credentials, then block health care.

For more than a generation, the Republican establishment was able to keep this bait-and-switch under control: racism was deployed to win elections, then was muted afterwards, partly to preserve plausible deniability, partly to focus on the real priority of enriching the one percent. But with Trump they lost control: the base wanted someone who was blatantly racist and wouldn’t pretend to be anything else. And that’s what they got, with corruption, incompetence, and treason on the side.

Nonetheless, aside from a handful of Never Trumpers, just about everyone in the Republican establishment decided that they could work with that. They knew what Trump was, but were willing to overlook it as long as they could push their usual agenda. What about the populism? They guessed, correctly, that this wouldn’t be a problem: Trump didn’t even hesitate about abandoning all his campaign promises and going all in for cutting taxes on the rich while slashing benefits for the poor.

Early on, some speculated that this would be a temporary alliance – that establishment Republicans would use Trump to get what they wanted, then turn on him. But it’s now clear that won’t happen. Trump has exceeded everyone’s worst expectations, yet Republicans, far from cutting him loose, are tying themselves even more closely to his fate. Why?

The answer, I’d argue, is that they’re stuck. They knowingly made a deal with the devil, and can’t back out.

More specifically, Trump’s very awfulness means that if he falls, the whole party will fall with him. Republicans could conceivably distance themselves from a president who turned out to be a bad manager, or even one who turned out to have engaged in small-time corruption. But when the corruption is big time, and it’s combined with obstruction of justice and collaboration with Putin, nobody will notice which Republicans were a bit less involved, a bit less obsequious, than others. If Trump sinks, he’ll create a vortex that sucks down everyone involved.

And so we now have the Republican party as a whole fully complicit in Trump’s crimes – because that’s what they are, whether or not he and those around him are ever brought to justice.

What this means, among other things, is that expecting the GOP to exercise any oversight or constrain Trump in any way is just foolish at this point. Massive electoral

40% of the likely voters approve of Trump. That’s good enough to win.

From the book's Epilogue:
Quote:

Trump, in Bannon’s view, was a chapter, or even a detour, in the Trump revolution, which had always been about weaknesses in the two major parties. The Trump presidency — however long it lasted — had created the opening that would provide the true outsiders their opportunity. Trump was just the beginning.

Standing on the Breitbart steps that October morning, Bannon smiled and said: “It’s going to be wild as shit.”

6ixStringJack, all you proved is that Republicans lack self-control. Australians, for example, don't mentally come unglued when mocked: Kathy Griffin, Laugh Your Head Off World Tour review, Melbourne Comedy Theatre

"I've got no agent, I've got no publicist," say US comedian Kathy Griffin during the first Melbourne performance of her world tour. She's talking about how her career imploded in the wake of her posing with a mock-up of Donald Trump's blood-covered head.

After the pic went viral online, Griffin was sacked by CNN and had theatres across the US cancel her planned shows. Former friends condemned her, while Trump supporters inundated her – and her mother and ill sister – with abuse and death threats. {Nothing says more clearly that the GOP is full of nuts and delicate snowflakes.}

But this is Australia, and the stunt has seemingly had no impact on her popularity with fans here. A packed Comedy Theatre gave her a rock-star welcome and an extra show was added due to demand.

While the Trump incident and its aftermath is given due weight in the show (Griffin was the subject of a two-month federal investigation and, astonishingly, put on a no-fly list), the verbose redhead also spends plenty of time telling more upbeat anecdotes, like her friendly relationship with her eccentric next door neighbours in Hollywood – Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

Griffin says she doesn't "give a f---" anymore and is happy to dish dirt on some of her famous former friends, as well as her run-ins with executives in the entertainment industry. In the context of the sexual harassment scandals currently engulfing powerful Hollywood figures, Griffin's world tour and recent retraction of her apology starts to look like an important act of defiance.

SEC Probing Kushner Company Role In Visas-For-Money Program

Chinese who invest in Kushner company real estate deals can get green cards.

As Donald Trump battles to build a wall to keep Mexican immigrants out of America, the Securities and Exchange Commission is probing the real estate company owned by the family of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and its link to a lucrative federal visa program, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The EB-5 visa program provides green cards to immigrants who invest a minimum of $500,000 in certain American businesses. The Associated Press reported last year that wealthy Chinese spent $7.7 billion obtaining 40,000 of the “golden visas” in the U.S. in the last decade.

If there is any truth to that story, it could certainly mean trouble for the Trump administration.

That's very similar to how they ended up getting Republican George Ryan out of the Governorship of Illinois, only to replace him with Democrat Rod Blagoyovich who was also later ousted for different charges of corruption.

The EB-5 "visa for money" program is an official, sanctioned, US program. Many countries around the world, including first-world countries, have similar programs.

Apparently it's a very popular program with many US businesses looking for investors - popular enough to grant 4,000 Chinese investor-visas every year over 10 years. I estimate these visas are requested by a minimum of 1000 companies per year.

Unless someone can find Jared Kushner played an active role in FRAUDULENTLY obtaining visas for investors - ie, these investors didn't comply with program requirements or were otherwise ineligible - I don't see a problem here, except perhaps false advertising by implication, by Jared's sister.

I believe I do understand the point of the article.

40,000 visas have been granted !!! To CHINESE !!! In a "VISA FOR MONEY" scheme !!! It's YUGE !!! Be alarmed !!!

The fact that it's been over the span of 10 years; a legal, official, US program; one similar to what other countries do; and participated in by thousands and thousands of companies from all over the world ... well, pay no attention to that.

And Kushner's sister mentioned Kushner while promoting visas in China ! Jared must be fraudulently pocketing money from fraudulent visas ! That's the only conclusion you can draw ! Jared is guilty !!!

Even if the visas were all perfectly legally obtained.

Looking further, while your link is dated this year, its links go back to reporting from last May and August. So it's churning old allegations without new information.

Since the program was created in 1990, 80% of the visas from this program go to 4 countries: China, South Korea, Taiwan, United Kingdom. We really must start vetting those Brits.
In 2014, 85% were given to Chinese Nationals. So we should investigate Obamination more.
