The World is not enough.

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and everything I have to say is purely speculative so don't gun me down if my interpretation offends you but...

**WARNING** The following is metaphorical overkill on my behalf

The way I see things is that the Reavers are the corporate bosses of the FOX network, raping and killing (canclelling) this awesome series before any really deep shit can be done in the show. This (I think) has had a huge impact on Joss Whendon in an article somewhere, Joss states that if the show wasn't cancelled that the one couple he would not break up is Zoe and Wash. The fact that Wash is speared (what seems to be) through the heart may be a representation of Joss's dream of Firefly being utterly destroyed by FOX (Reavers). :(

Now my knowledge is quite minimal and FOX may not be the only reaver that has dismanteled his dream (i.e. FOX may not be soley responsible) but it seems to me that it is really unlikely that there will be more episondes to come (which sucks cause I really give a hump and a half).

So what I'm going to conclude on is:

Is Firefly really dead or is Serenity and her crew just drifting on the edge of the verse?

Fox is the one and only reason the show was canceled. No need to be polite about it. They continue to make the stupidest mistakes. I wish they would sell the rights to X-Men back to Marvel. They butchered the goram out of Deadpool in Wolverine Origins.

I honestly think the possibilities of the show returning is slim to none. It's just been too long and the initial ratings is just too risky for Fox to pull the trigger again. Also, most of the cast has gotten on from FireFly.

As for a sequel, I am confident we will be seeing one. It may be many years down the line but we will eventual get a sequel. Joss truly loves Firefly/Serenity and he will return to her when the time is right. He mentioned he was not positive about returning to direct Avengers 2 because he doesn't get to tell his own story and is basically retelling someone else's. To me that sounds like he wants to work on his own projects.

The last time there was this strong a fan movement, it was for Star Trek. It took them 18 years in animation and syndication.

IN only 10, we've got 1 movie, and a strong fan base.

We need to hang in there. Sooner or later, somebody will release the rights, and some studio guy who hasn't got an idea of his own will hit on Firefly, and we'll be reborn, get another chance. Look at all the CRAP they're remaking.

Depending on how sincere Joss is about his love for the show, NOW is a really good time-- the success of the Avengers movie will give him renewed clout.

Firefly got made because Fox wanted Joss, the hitmaker from Buffy and Angel, and let him do what he wanted to do. He's bound to be getting job offers as the hitmaker from Avengers-- one of them will be willing to let him do whatever he wants. And if HE REALLY wants to do Firefly again, they'll let him. And if the Original Cast is available and REALLY wants to do it, the show will be reborn. Or there might be Firefly- the Next Generation, with a different cast.

Personally, that's what I expect.

But Firefly ain't dead yet. We got almost 10 years more before we start to out-age original Trek. Gotta be in this for a long haul.

I don't know about your claim of an article stating Joss would not break up Wash and Zoe. It's been said before that Alan actually approached Joss about killing him off in the series. They've pretty much stated it was always something they planned to do eventually. The movie was kind of a condensed season 2 and even then it may have pushed the death farther forward then they'd like, but I think it was always coming.

As for a private financier, I think they'd basically need to purchase the rights from Fox. I don't think they can just offer Fox money and get the show going again. I don't entirely understand the reasoning but it's something about how the industry works. So, while enough money could probably get it done it seems unlikely anyone with that kind of money is going to come along anytime soon.

My prediction is we'll never see the original crew back together in any live action form. However, with the cult status I'm guessing we'll see a new series of some sort in the future. Kind of like what happened with V and BSG.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

If you're talking about from the end of the original Star Trek series to the start of Star Trek: The Next Generation, then you're right about it being 18 years. But it was only 10 from the end of TOS to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. So we're ahead of the game as far as series-to-movie time frame, and only time will tell if there is ever another series. More likely another movie first.

One major difference though. ST had over 70 episodes broadcast almost perpetually all over the country (and around the world) during that 10 years, so a larger fan base was created. Firefly and Serenity have sold a lot of DVDs, but unfortunately we're nowhere near the numbers of the Trek fans. Yet.

But to answer the major questions by the OP: Fox is the main culprit for the demise of Firefly, mainly because they ended up getting a series different than what they were expecting, one that was as much thoughtful as it was action-packed, and it attracted a higher female audience when they were targeting males.

And no, Firefly is not dead. No more than the literature of Ray Bradbury just because of his recent passing. As long as people are watching Firefly and Serenity on DVD or Blu-Ray, going to "Can't Stop the Serenity" screenings, reading the comics and other related books, writing fanfic, and posting on this and other web sites because of their love for the show, its characters and its creator, Firefly will continue to be a living entity.

Long may Serenity fly!

I think it'll be a sequel, and considering Joss'z clout, it will be the 1st movie to break the billion dollar mark for budget. He will hav a shipyard bild a full scale stainless steel Firefly!!!! With a little luck, maybe I coud make sum uv the mechanical doodadz that go into it.

I think there's hope for the Firefly 'verse, but it would be an offshoot with an entirely different cast, with references and possibly cameos from the original crew. There's no reason why this couldn't happen, short of Fox still owning the rights and doing nothing with them at the moment.

You gotta remember that Firefly was cancelled over 10 years ago now. These actors aren't cartoon characters that don't age. As with all of us, the more years that go by, the less attractive they become. I think this effects Inara the most... although I suppose if the original series could be picked back up she could be a high ranking official in the Companion Guild who may call on Mal occasionally for a rendezvous with an old wealthy client who still can't get enough. There would be no way of convincing the audience today that she would be able to charge the exorbitant fees she once commanded over a decade ago though.

The problem with this change of story is that it might make the whole Mal/Inara thing weird if it wasn't written right. What has happened between them in the last 10 years? Did the new show happen before or after the movie? Are they married and she doesn't whore at all anymore but just acts as a den-mother for the new companions, or does she still whore even though they're married?

I think an entirely new Firefly could be a great idea if Joss was in complete artistic control of it and Fox didn't have any claim to it.

Who knows... It could happen someday. Netflix got the rights to Arrested Development and after all of these years we're finally going to see a new season of the best comedy ever made.

Here's hoping Fox doesn't hold the Firefly license forever!

Companion culture seems to be based on geisha culture. Back in pre-industrial times, the (mostly) chaste geisha existed alongside their courtesan counterparts, the oiran, both with lots of training in the other arts and services they perform. Oiran no longer exist, and after WWII, geisha began to take on prostitution connotations among the soldiers stationed in Japan. Nowadays prostitution is actually frowned upon among geisha and seen as a distraction from the art, and as such often kept secret, whereas with companions it's all out in the open. But even so, it's the other services that are actually the bigger draw for both. As such there's really no reason why companions can't practice into their golden years.

Joss has two monthly comics: Buffy and Angel+Faith. If Joss could find time for a third monthly comic, Firefly for example, and then Hollywood could make the comic into a movie . . . Wow! I see a way forward to more Firefly! ( That way the Firefly TV actors don't need be cast in the made-from-a-comic Serenity 2 movie roles. Where would Hulk be if fanboys ruled the World and Hulk had to be the same actor in all the Hulk movies? Insist on nothing less than consistency and you'll get nothing. )

In that context Byte, I totally agree with you. I just don't know how the whole Inara thing is going to translate to a Western audience who, both male and female alike, seem to be equally as obsessed with youth and beauty more often than not. I'm sure there is a way to make it written the right way, but all I'm saying is that having the beautiful prostitute who has all access to her own shuttle, and the underlying sexual tension between her and the captain will not work anymore today. Well... maybe for just one more movie..... :smokin:

They'd have to do a lot more with the other characters too. How long has it been since the Serenity movie now? Both Kaylee and Simon have aged enough in real life where the viewer would have to suspend a lot of disbelief to go along with them on their first few dates. If they're not married, at the very least, their marriage (and all the bad behind the scenes things that threaten to ruin it) would have to be part of the second movie.

Really, at this point, I hope they do just one more movie, then Fox gives the rights back to Joss in about 3 or 4 years, and he can work on a new 'Verse project with an entirely new crew. Hopefully it would be 20 or so years in the future from the end of the first season, so that the original cast can be regular guest stars if it's written well and isn't just hokey.

Oh yeah....

And if he just HAS to work with fox again (talk about a genius who doesn't learn from his own mistakes.....), he should try to get it on FX instead of FOX prime. It's Always Sunny is still going strong and "The League" is going on it's fourth season. In my opinion they're the two best comedies since Arrested development, and if they were on FOX they would have been canceled before the first season ended.

My favorite part of "The League" is still Taco's birthday song from the first episode:

At this point, going on ten years since the cancellation of Firefly, nearly seven years since the release of Serenity, I don't think we will see Serenity or her crew on the big or small screens again save through dvd viewings. We have some shiny things from QmX, the RPG, some comics (which are far too few and very far between), and the hope that some part of the 'Verse will be realized in the future. Still not sure why we browncoats don't rate a monthly comic like Buffy or Angel, but it is what it is I suppose.

The cast has moved on, Joss is now tied up with the Avengers franchise and who knows when or if he will ever have free time to pursue any sort of Serenity follow up. Even if we never see the continuing adventures of Mal and his crew, it sure would be nice to see some sort of spin off or something. I'd take about anything at this point, as would most of us I am sure.

I hold out hope, even when it looks like relief ain't coming, but that's what we browncoats do.
