CARVER

Hello everybody,

I was not sure where to post this type of thing, so please forgive me if I missed the right sub-forum. I hardly ever actually post to forums although I've lurked on many, but I felt compelled to speak out.

Why, you may ask? I'll tell you:

My sister and I just finished watching Serenity. And it was a long journey to seeing it, but more on that in a minute. I just wanted to say that of all the films, books, TV shows and plays I've encountered in our modern time, I have found nothing quite as polarizing or as amazing, beside the Holy Book that I read, as Firefly.

(Don't care about the block of text? scroll to the last line...)

When I was only sophomore in high school, my family and I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was the best show I had ever seen and although I wasn't a rabid fan at the time, I felt the hooks in me.

Now years later (today) I'm about to complete my associates degree and just a few months ago my sister and I stumbled upon some Buffy the Vampire slayer videos online while we were supposed to be studying at the college. The old awesomeness rushed back and we bought the entire box set and are still in the process of reliving the series.

However after going onto a Buffy fan forum I heard about this crazy show called Firefly that Joss Whedon had created, and everybody was saying how its the best series so I went snooping about and watched an episode.

At first, from just reading the plot stuff and hearing about it, I thought it sounded cheesy. I said that all the way through the first episode until I had gotten to about the fourth, wherein my sister and I were like: "Screw homework, this stuff is all that and a bag of chips!"

Don't worry, we did our homework. And then we watched all of the episodes and have been waiting days for the movie to come in the mail.

As I started with, we just finished watching Serenity and we were on the edges of our seats, my sister was crying her eyes out. I almost started whimpering.

I now understand what all of the hubbub's about.

I am also astounded that after so many years such a large and dedicated fanbase can still be thriving, after I've seen many of my obscure obsession's fanforums fade away. I want to be a browncoat now, and to be aboard this bustling ship we call the "Fanbase".

I want to be a writer, and of all the literature and film I've studied, this is the stuff I want to be the model for my work.

I just wanted to tell the world, well you guys, that Firefly had had a profound effect on the way I see things.

So what I'm saying I guess is: hello Firefly fans, Whedon has recruited another! And also, how much effect has this show had on all of you?

Welcome to the finest club of people in the world, who have the unique ability to see something just ain't right in it somehow :wink: It all started when F@X aired the show out of order, pre-empted it, and just generally made a mess of things. Why are we STILL here?? Well, it doesn't take but a click through on the set to see there's not much else out there... Before I came here I never considered myself a "fan" of anything. I've been around for over six years now (in one form or another) and can't see myself leaving any time soon...

I have to warn you, being a fan here has it's highs and lows. Most days someone still wants to :hanged: an exec or two... but there's plenty good days to be had too... If you don't know yet, there's some shiny graffic novels to be had- Those Left Behind, Better Days, and Shepard's Tale and you're in luck!! Free comic day is coming up, and if you go to your local comic retailer on May 5, You get a FF/ Star Wars crossover comic FREE!

Plus, there's the chat room, and Real World Events Discussion (RWED we call it, much fighting and uh... unique... folk about in there...tread carefully if you're not up for that :wink: ) to hold ya over in the meanwhile, there's charity events many places where we show up and sing the theme song off key, and we all follow our Crew's careers and wait 'till we are flying again...

Since I'm unofficial hander-outter of Browncoats, and you've requested, Here ya go- Two Virtual Browncoats!! :biggrin: :biggrin: (one fer sis, too!)... Yer in luck, as we've stopped recycling them, people got all manner of suspicious about the bullet holes, doncha know...

I'm sure other's will be along shortly to point you to the Mudder's milk and the Buffet :smile:

Welcome to the Crew, darlin!

Nicely done Wish.

There's also a table top RPG, the companions for the series and movie (full of character and ideas), short stories from the crew in the Still Flying companion, secrets the board has heard, character discussions, fanfics like in the Blue Sun Room or second seasons like Virtual Firefly or Still Flying (the website), and fanfilms like Browncoats Redemption.

There's plenty here to keep you entertained. We don't have any rules really, people tend to behave themselves pretty well, and we don't really have any moderators for that reason either. So don't worry about whether you're posting in the right place so much, as long as where you're posting makes sense to you. Everything that gets posted shows up for a while on the main page anyway.

Out of curiosity, who's your favourite character?

Effect the show has had on me? Well, I haven't really watched any other sci-fi since because there is nothing that I think can ever really supplant Firefly for me. Also, I used to be one hard-core fiend, but nowadays I find myself writing embarrassingly sappy romance fic about pairings on the Firefly crew. Not even sure WHAT that's about.

Thanks for the warm welcome you two!

I'm definitely going to be checking out the stuff you've both mentioned.

And Bytemite, the romance fics aren't that far off for any fanbase. I can't help but notice that the majority of fanfiction.net is about just that. :) And any writing is helpful practice.

I'd have to say that my favorite character is River, but it's a close tie for first.

Ooh. Lot's of major River fans around here. You'll see.

I have trouble choosing actually. I guess I'd say Mal, Inara, and River because all three of them are so incredibly COMPLICATED so I can do a lot with them. But all of the characters have their fun nuances.

I probably write Book and Wash the least, though I'd like to think that's because I mostly write after the movie stories.

FLORALBUNNY

Welcome, CARVER! Mousie says you're #46842 to sign onto the crew of that great shiny ship SERENITY, so if it feels a mite crowded from time to time, be aware that the virtual/literal line blurs on occasion, near Fringe-like, some say. You've been issued your coats - - I think all will agree they look mighty fine on you. Stash your stuff in a cage down here in the cargo bay (key in your pocket matches a lock if you look carefully) grab one of these jugs of Milk and a punnet of berries, and climb on up to the galley, where we are preparing to Question the Buffet. Cheese (yes, there's plenty of it, as our Jossinator "loves him some cheese")is just coming up to the bubble, Wife Soup is warm and comforting, bao and cider are fresh, and I've finally re-stocked the ice-planets. You'll find them in the bottom shelf of the cooler. Shimmerwine is in the fountain at the after end of the table, but be careful with your approach. There's been something living under there for several years, so keep your feet well back away from it.

bun you've come to the right place ;:-)

Howdy, CARVER.

I'm relatively new here myself. With the stedy influx uv fanz fanatic enuff to join a forum being a fraction uv the total, how long till the whole world iz clamoring for a new movie and seriez?

Not long, I say! Especially since the likely success uv Avengerz will giv Joss all kindz uv clout!

ALASHWOOD

I just beat you here by a coupla weeks. Here in the UK we never had Firefly on mainstream TV - and still haven't!

I discovered Serenity in 2009 - loved it - wanted more . . . but to no avail.

THEN .... I FOUND FIREFLY - in January 2012!!! Loved it - wanted more - uh oh . . .

To say this has had a resounding effect on me is an understatement. I've never been an active fan of any series, SciFi or otherwise; but all that's changed with Firefly.

- My daughters have become Browncoats themselves; writing new stories, illustrations, and now, even songs. - Loaned a copy of the DVD box set to the postman. He's bought his own and already loaned it to family, colleagues and friends etc. - Gave a 'sample' (Disk One) to a family member who happens to be a policeman. Almost everyone in his division has become a fan, and now they're spreading the signal too, even to pals in other police forces. - Told friends at my Karate club (44 known convertees); - Added links from all my (non related) websites. Among just this 'sampling', the vast majority have said how amazing it is - AND WANT MORE!

My philosophy is: "There's always a new potential fan somewhere, and they all add to the message to Bring Back Firefly.

I've become aware that there's virtually zero knowledge of Firefly here, and (with a strong marketing background) have set myself some tasks;

The whole concept is to Look Forward instead of merely reminiscing.

1. Make more people (particularly here) aware of what they're missing (they've missed); New website/s, blogs, facebook etc.; 'Guerilla marketing'; Posting links and connections to the rest of the live and active Browncoat 'verse (places like fireflyfans.net) ; Find new conscripts everywhere possible.

2. Relight the mission to Bring Back Firefly (or rather the Serenity in some guise;

Central UK contact point for Browncoats (old and new) to liase and coordinate activities, and meet to input ideas; Recruit a team of dedicated people nationwide for various tasks; Connect with still active Browncoat communities worldwide, particularly 'front line' Browncoats in the USA and Canada;

3. Gather as much background information as possible, including from decision makers;

4. Solutions for obstacles, such as;

- Given the finance, would Joss want to recreate a new 'verse? (This is the key to everything). - Casting committments (this can be overcome); - How to get funding; - Releasing Rights to names etc.

. . . and much more.

This is a truly legendary piece of magic. We all love it, and must share it with everyone else, dont'cha think?

Has it affected me?

Nah!

Ther ain't a power in the 'verse

Howdy Carver!

Glad to have you aboard! As far as becoming a browncoat, you became that the moment you fell into deep homage of the show (just as everyone here) and joined this fan-site! ( I am glad that WISH handed you your own virtual brown coat though, looks nice on ya, and a bonus was getting one for your sister too) We are super glad to have you on the ship, enjoy all the goodiness!

RIONAEIRE

Beir bua agus beannacht

Welcome. Firefly has had a huge impact on my life. I'm in our local browncoat chapter and am known as a reviewer of fanfic on fanfiction.net, sadly I've had to cut back due to time constraints. But the most important thing Firefly did for me is firm up the direction I wanted to go professionally. There were always signs that I'd persue the field I'm in, but Firefly cemented it for me, showed me that one hundred percent it was the right direction for me, helped me realize what I really wanted to do with my life professionally, both currently and in terms of life goals for the future. I wonder if it weren't for Firefly my life would have not gone fully in this direction, the direction I know I'm supposed to be going in.

So don't feel silly about a short lived scifi show with no aliens impacting how you view the world. :)

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

Wow, thanks everyone for the kind replies!!! Sorry for the slow uptake, I've been spending all week doing last minute projects before finals week.

To BYTEMITE: I think it's kinda tough to play favorite, too. But I do love Wash. And its funny Alan Tudyk went to High School in Plano, I live not far from and have heard of 3 or 4 TV actors from there.

To FLORALBUNNY, I'll watch my feet at the table lol.

TO JO753, Welcome also. Nice to know I'm not the only newbie :)

To ALASHWOOD, Wow you are the most productive person I've encountered in a while, and I can't believe the UK hasn't gotten the awesome!

To RIONAEIRE, Thanks! I need to see if there are any other browncoats in my area methinks. I know the feeling with time constraints, but I hope you continue writing and that I can read some of it after finals week :) Nice to see another writer inspired by Whedon. I don't think I really took scriptwriting seriously until I started watching his stuff again. So much stuff on TV is look at and think "How do these people make any money of of this junk?"

And I don't feel silly at all about my little obsession hehehe.

FIREFLYPASSENGER

I love meeting new Browncoats, they all got stories.

The 'verse is coming on 10 years since Serenity first flew in Firefly, Sept, 20, 2002. I watched it live on TV so I have been around a long time. This was my first board to post on.

I was lucky enough to get to be an extra in Serenity, Scene selection 4 after Jayne says lets be bad guys. As Mal and Zoe enter the rehead crossing in front is me!

There is a fan documentary call Done The Impossible made by fans about fans for fans. The cast and crew are fans so they are in it as well. I am also in that and on the back of the DVD.

It's the Browncoats that make this the best fandom in my opinion. We are more like the family you choose. :)

We are hear to listen and answer questions. We obviously love talking about Firefly and other topics as well.

Welcome home to our newest Browncoats! We have the best ship in the 'verse.
