-Ibelieve that of the millions and billions of planets in the verse the odds are impossibly in favor of intelligent life out there somewhere!!

While I have to agree that it's silly to think that this is somehow the only rock with life on it, I'm not sure that's what Joss Whedon meant. I think it was more the latter part of his statement that was important. Everyone else is doing aliens. Also, the Firefly 'verse isn't that terribly far away from our own, so there's a good chance that people wouldn't have gotten far enough to meet any other life.
