This was an inspirational film.

This was filmed in NYC and Buffalo during summer 2021.
The copyright date is 2022.
Sound of Freedom was released July 4th, 2023.

So only Libtards can claim that stars such as David Morse or John Lithgow were "jumping on the bandwagon" of Angel Studios successes.

This is a true story. No woke, truth and fact is the opposite of woke.

The cast was wonderful - I never thought that any actor was not a good fit for the role they had. The cinematography was crisp and clear, a technical accomplishment. Transitions and editing were also crisp and clear.
There is some Italian, some Latin, and subtitles are provided.

I enjoyed this film.
I have also enjoyed Sound of Freedom immensely, and I also enjoyed The Shift, which were also both from Angel Studios.
This film merely lacked the spectacle of something like Edge of Tomorrow, Free Guy, John Wick, and thus I only gave it 4 stars out of 5. But within it's genre, it excels.

My old man and I are going to watch The Shift soon. Unfortunately, the last two times he's come over were shorter visits than usual and there were more pressing issues to discuss, so we just haven't gotten around to it yet. It is the next movie that we're watching though and he's really been looking forward to seeing it.

Interesting that you would compare it side by side with Edge of Tomorrow, John Wick and Free Guy, even if to say that it lacked the spectacle of these movies...

Is this something of an action movie then? I really haven't heard much about it but the IMDB description wouldn't have made me think it was.

But cringe quote of the day in this movie though....

Quote:

Mayor Gould: It's a shame that you're a woman, mother. You would have made an excellent man.
Cabrini: Oh no, Mr. Mayor, men could never do what we do.

Uggggggh...

Cabrini is not an action flick. As I stated, this is a different genre than those.

FWIW, I did enjoy Catwoman with Halle Berry.

Yes, that line and a few others were cringe-worthy. There is some amount of "re-focusing" of perspective, geared toward women or immigrants. Not sure if this was in script, or in post-production. However, perhaps our experience of woke in the 3 years since filming have left us hyper-sensitive to such focus.
I will point out that the film was directed in 2021 by the same director as Sound of Freedom in 2018.

Cabrini was an actual woman, a historical figure. She was a Nun in The Catholic Church. The Epilogue of the film points out her place in history. Until that point, I was not aware that I have personally seen buildings with her mark upon them, without knowing the origin, or understanding the significance. Most of the males in the film have been lost to history, meaningful only as they approach her orbit.
So, it really is a film about a woman, an extraordinary woman, who accomplished much. This film is not about The Queen of America, nor the Queen of Wakanda, nor the Queen of Atlantis, nor Queen of Unobtainium.

I highly recommend it for those who enjoy films.
It would also be a wonderful date night film.

But I mean, to be fair, who the hell says that? You would have made an excellent man?

Woke just sucked the fun right out of everything. Her reply wasn't only justified after being talked to like that, but I'm sure it was a great gotcha moment in the movie, giving the pompous asshole what he deserved.

I get the feeling from what little I glean here that he's not one of the "bad guys" in the movie. He's just a loudmouthed dick and a "product of his time" then?

To counter your virtue-signalling outrage, I might point out:
If the film is accurate, then she was the first female Missionary. Thousands before her, she was the first woman. That is history, not Fake woke pretend.
And America was not where she wanted to go. She was forced to go, not only to America, but the worst place, the most wretched place - New York City. And every man in the film told her that they will not allow her to do what she wanted to do.

He's not wrong there.

Wow. $50 Million?

Somebody is either lining their pockets with gold off of private investor bucks or somebody is going to get fired after this one.

Probably a little of Column A and a little of Column B, if I were to make a guess.

Not even $20 Million grossed worldwide and less than three quarters of a million overseas.

Now, a mid budget that's not low enough to really even qualify as indie isn't going to get the same 2.5x the budget requirement as a large studio like Universal or Disney gets and there was no doubt very little money spent on marketing, but with theater cuts this needed to at least make 180% to 200% of the production budget to make even.

They had to know there was no chance this was ever going to gross $80 to $100 Million or more worldwide.

My guess now is that anybody who wasn't heavily into what Angel Studios has been putting out and got into investing in the company because of the wild success of Sound of Freedom is going to back out of future Angel Studios projects and that's going to mean a lot less money for production budgets going forward unless they can find some new and larger investors that might be able to have influence over how how future movies are produced as a condition of that loan.

Whoever had anything to do with the decision making at Angel Studios really dropped the ball here and might very well end up sinking the studio.

Something like Sound of Freedom was lightning in a bottle and ended up reaching far wider and diverse an audience than anything that Angel Studios is likely to ever put out again.

They got a huge influx of cash because of it, and the first thing some of the suits there thought would be a great idea is to gamble a third of it on one movie. They probably pulled out their calculator and figured to themselves that if Sound of freedom could make $250 Million off a $15 Million budget, well a movie with a $50 Million budget is going to make us over $830 Million!!!!!! QUICK!!! WHO'S GOT A STORY!!! I GOT $50 MILLION TO PUT ON ANYTHING!!!!

The good news is, with how little it made in the theaters, the theater cut isn't that much. So it made $30 Million less than it cost to make. The theaters probably take $10 Million of the $20 Million it made. Maybe they spent $1 Million on marketing on Christian radio?

They turned $50 Million into about $9 Million here.

Oops.

Okay. Fair enough...

But now I'm even more perplexed on the budget numbers.

Just watched The Shift with my old man. My first Angel Studios movie.

That cost $6.4 Million to make and grossed $12.14 Million to produce. Basically a wash in the theaters if not a slight loss there. They may make money off of it by selling DVDs and BluRay.

It was a good movie. Even better when you realize how little it cost to make.

Gotta keep those budgets down. That goes for everyone and not just the big players. There's no world where Angel Studios can make a movie for $50 Million and expect not to lose money on it. They could have made 7 "The Shift"s with their budget on Cabrini and had money left over.

So far, not including Sound of Freedom, the entire gross that Angel Studios has made in the box office is $54,813,123. This includes The Shift and Cabrini, as well as His Only Son and After Death. This means if they didn't have Sound of Freedom money as a cushion, they'd be in debt. The entire gross of the 4 other movies they put in the theater combined covers the cost of Cabrini with $4.8 Million leftover, but around $27 Million of that gross was taken by the theaters. There wasn't much marketing but for radio airtime for 4 movies it had to have cost at least $2 Million.

His Only Son had a production budget of $250k and grossed $12,084,084.

I can't find production budget figures for After Death, but it grossed $11,478,326 in the box office.

We don't know what the budget for After Death was, but let's be extremely charitable and just call it $250k to match His Only Son. Now we're at $56.9 Million for 4 movies. They grossed about $27 Million after theater takes and maybe made $25 Million after marketing. Even with the profits from 3 other movies, one of them we know ended up making 48 times what it cost to produce, they lost over $30 Million.

I know Cabrini has John Lithgow and David Morse in it, but The Shift had Neal McDonough and Sean Astin as well. I'd say that's pretty even on the casting with the B and C tier actors along with a cast otherwise full of no-names in both movies.

I still have no idea where that $50 Million went or who thought that it was appropriate to spend more than twice on this than it cost to make Sound of Freedom, The Shift and His Only Son combined. At this point I have to suspect that somebody wearing a suit at Angel Studios is embezzling from the company.

Okay. Fair enough...

But now I'm even more perplexed on the budget numbers.

Your opinion?

You make a lot of assumptions, in a void.

Sound of Freedom was filmed in 2018, perhaps after approval by Fox. After completion, Fox got gobbled up by Disney, which shelved the best film they then had.
After years of lawsuit and legal wrangling, the original producers were able to wrest back the film rights of their film, and they partnered with Angel Studios in about 2023 - and released it on July 4.
Angel had nothing to do with the film in the first 5 years of the project.

Cabrini was filmed in 2021. Finished in 2022.
It was a wonderful film, and should be seen by many. It cost a bunch, you say. Should they take the loss? They are not Disney or other studios which can write off entire completed projects as tax deductions.
So they partnered with Angel Studios to bring the completed film to audiences, and at least reap some reward for thier efforts. Not much money, but reputations and such could be helped.

Would you prefer they give up instead?

I don't only say it, the numbers speak for themselves. It cost at least $40 Million too much to make.

Should they take the loss? They have no choice but to take the loss now. Trust me, they're already figuring out how to maximize the tax benefits on this loss.

The Mission

Our mission is to use Cabrini’s life story to create a legacy film with the impact to inspire, motivate and give hope to both young and old, now and into the future, from generation to generation.

To use the example of her life as a roadmap and light to address the prominent issues of our time.

We have established a 501(c)(3), Lodigiano, Inc. where 100% of net revenues earned will go to charity.

Well good for them. Now they get to keep all the money and they don't have to give any of it to charity because there was a net loss of around $40+ Million here.

$50 Million is a stupid budget for this movie.

We're either witnessing somebody making a shell company and intentionally trying to make a movie fail by making sure it never had a chance in the first place, or we're watching very stupid people in charge of a small studio piss everything away and bankrupt themselves after their first movie.

I won't even pretend to know what the hell the big studios are thinking when they light $200 Million on fire to make movies like Killers of the Flower Moon or Napoleon, but places like Amazon and Sony have a hell of a lot more money to waste than Lodigiano, Inc. does, unless they are a shell company for a place like Amazon or Apple.
