The remaining crew inch forward after the loss of Serenity.
|
| They all crammed into Warminger’s largest building – a meeting-cum-dance hall that was only heated for when there was a meeting or a dance on – and waited for their name to be called by the townspeople that appeared in succession in the hall’s doorway. These were the majority that had volunteered to put the homeless up; the minority considered it the fault of the people of Pity that they’d gotten their settlement blown up and why should they suffer for it too, and who was that Firefly crew anyways? The chairs had initially been put out in rows but as the hours passed the arrangement changed: people huddled them in circles, pushed them together for something to lie on, hung coats over the back of them to make a tent for sleeping children. Mal, River, Kaylee, Simon and Jayne sat on the wooden floor along with the other settlers who had arrived after all the chairs had been taken: Mal, like Jayne, who was opposite him, sitting slightly apart but facing in towards the group, Kaylee and River leaning on each of Simon’s shoulders. River’s eyes were open, gazing at the floor; Kaylee, her tears having only just subsided, sighed heavily while she dozed. Someone was giving out blankets. It gave Mal the idea of fetching his own… The name ‘Jayne Cobb’ was called from the doorway. A small, thin man stood there with his small, thin wife. Jayne looked at them, looked at Mal. “We’re getting split up?” he asked. Mal was too tired to move. It came into his head, seeing the contrast between Jayne and the couple, and imagining the gap between their expectations and what they were going to get, to make a joke about it. But instead, when he saw first Jayne rising, slinging the rough sack he’d found to stash Vera over his shoulder, loping over to the doorway, then the couple rushing with looks of visible alarm to consult the list-carrying official who was organizing the billeting, he hauled himself to his feet and followed after Jayne. And he found himself, when he caught up, feeling plain sorry for the sad-looking merc. Standing between an apologizing official and an apologizing couple. Almost like he should put a captainly arm around him or something. “Come on Jayne,” he said, and to the official: “If there’s no-one who can take us all together, then we’re staying here.” And he returned with Jayne to where the rest of the crew were sitting. “Don’t have to stay, you know,” he said to Jayne, who sat with Vera in his lap. “Could be this is the right time for you to split.” Jayne just grunted. Then another name was called. “Dr Tam!” Not wanting to rouse Kaylee, Simon turned only his eyes towards the voice. “I just told the guy in charge, we want to be put together,” Mal told Simon. “No, no, that’s Tull, the father of the baby I delivered. He must be” – Tull was approaching. “Dr Tam!” he began, with suppressed but easily discernible anxiety, “it’s Barbara, she’s doing this shaking-twitching thing with her little arms” – and he demonstrated – “and we don’t know, is that – normal?” Kaylee’s eyes had opened. She was watching Tull. “I guess I’d better have a look,” said Simon, turning his head and brushing Kaylee’s hair with a kiss. Reluctantly Kaylee pulled away from him to allow him to stand up. He had barely done so when his name was called again, this time from behind. A woman came towards him. “They said you were seeing to someone else, and I didn’t know what you looked like,” she said, reaching for his arm. “My husband’s been telling me not to bother you, but I know there’s something not right with him. His stomach” – Simon looked from Tull to the woman. “There’s a baby needing attention but I’ll be with you as soon as I can.” And then, surprising everyone, River said: “We’re not going to have more trouble from this one, are we?” The way she said it gave Simon a chill: mocking, officious, brutal. A voice from her Academy past, he was sure. And the way she was looking at Kaylee, as though expecting an answer – would did it mean? “Honey?” said Kaylee warily to River. “Passion is useful to the program,” River continued, glaring at Kaylee now. “But only if it is under control.” Simon spoke quietly to Tull, who was hovering nervously at his elbow. “Er, Tull, I – I think I need to attend to my sister first. But I’ll be right along, I promise.” Tull and the settler woman melted away. Simon crouched down before River. “You might need to attend to her first,” said River, crossing her arms and flicking her eyes toward Kaylee almost petulantly. From torturer to teenager in a blink. “Kaylee?” Simon asked. “Is she sick?” “He hasn’t even noticed!” River suddenly wailed, “I’m as good as making out with an Alliance tech and he hasn’t even noticed!” At this Kaylee colored deeply and slapped a hand to her mouth. “What the hell is going on?” Mal asked, sitting up. “Don’t, River!” said Kaylee desperately. “What’s she talking about?” Mal demanded. “It was me!” Kaylee cried through her hands. “My thoughts, what I was thinking!” “I don’t understand,” said Simon, bewildered. “Who’s been making out with an Alliance tech?” “Me,” said Kaylee miserably, hanging her head. “Almost.” “Well – what” – Simon stopped himself, pushed a hand through his hair – “when?” “On Meridian. When River said there was a rat on Serenity” – Kaylee’s tears started to flow again at the mention of the ship – “and the Alliance sent a tech to help us find it.” Mal nodded. “They helped all right,” he said grimly. “I didn’t realize!” Kaylee sobbed. “I thought he was – oh geez, and how stupid was this? – I thought he was into me and I thought – I thought – you weren’t!” she finished, looking pleadingly at Simon. Simon pushed his hand through his hair again. “This was how they attached the tracking device? Is that what you’re saying?” River had moved over to Kaylee and taken her hand. She patted it. “Don’t worry,” she said, in the cold Academy tones of earlier, “we forgive you.” Kaylee stared at her, aghast. Mal spoke up quietly. “Simon, go and see Tull’s baby. We’ll still be here when you get back.” Without relinquishing an ounce of tension, Simon picked up his medical bag and left. Jayne muttered: “Why would I want to split now? And miss all this fun.” Mal unfolded the blanket that had been left for the group and reached for Kaylee. She crawled towards him and into the crook of his arm; and Mal, lying down with her, pulled the blanket over both of them. “Ain’t nothing to forgive,” he whispered to Kaylee.

Uh oh. Kaylee's beating herself up, River is accusing Kaylee, Jayne is unamused, Simon is being pulled too many directions... It's all going to hell, isn't it?
"Someone was giving out blankets. It gave Mal the idea of fetching his own…"
Mal, woobie of iron. Plus Kaylee teddy-bear.
I'm glad you felt like posting, know it's been rough for you recently.

Yes, we had the blanket conversation didn't we! (And I looked at your picture this week - no need to say it survived the inbox cull!)
Yes, Kaylee-Mal teddy bear fest, leaving weird River and tough Jayne on the outside.
Would you think it was a tragedy if Simon and Kaylee didn't end up together?
Thanks for the feedback, as always.

Jayne's sad attempt at a departure gave me a little laugh. But, oh, poor Kaylee.... Good for Mal for being strong enough to provide a little comfort.

Well, it depends. If the two least complicated characters can't get their crap together and salvage a relationship, then it really doesn't say much for everyone else's chances. Especially considering how the Kaylee "I'm a poor Rim-worlder not worth the scum on their shoes" towards Simon directly parallels Mal's feelings for Inara a lot of time.
But in terms of the plot? Simon and Kaylee are a crowd pleaser, but I wouldn't call them strictly necessary as a couple. Hell, I'm surprised one of them wasn't killed off in the movie.

I completely agree about Simon/Kaylee. I think they make a lot less sense that M/I (but maybe that's just because I don't fully get what drives Kaylee; I need my characters more complicated than that... a really good Kaylee backstory would do wonders for me). If my story had continued, they'd be rapidly heading toward break-up. Heh. :-)

Kaylee and Simon's relationship in the very best world would be sweet, naive, and completely un-ironic. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SickeninglySweethearts Only they might actually pull it off.
But this is a Joss Whedon world. There will be tears. >)

Love how Mal stepped in for comfort. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought Kaylee and Simon would have been Jossed by the third or fourth season. As always, enjoy your little take on the verse.

LOL and if they hadn't been Joss'd they would have been River'd. Like she's ever going to let anyone take Simon away from her. But I agree w/ Bytemite, Kaylee's in dire need of backstory.

Hee! - I'm not sensing a whole lot of Silee lovin' here. Watch as Kaylee is transformed into the next Willow...Or maybe not. Whatever direction she takes, I personally don't think she has much backstory - meaning, I think she's had a pretty ordinary family and upbringing. But that doesn't mean she can't develop in interesting directions *more hee hee!*

You're probably right about her not having much backstory; or that it's not more complicated than what was presented in the series. Hmm, what does it say about my that I need my characters to be dark and tortured? Though I'm finally reading mal4prez's stories (took me long enough) and am kind of enjoying the way she's managed to torture them. And I am looking forward to whatever interesting directions you have planned and are giggling about up there.
Sorry to commandeer your comments with Silee hate. :-)

haha i like that! I actually took my name from the Bunny Man bridge, near where I grew up. Urban legend has it that an escapee from the local looney bin went around in a bunny suit slicing up local kids and hanging them from the bridge. It was a good hang-out spot in HS, but these days the area's crawling with trigger-happy hillbillies and rabid peacocks, so I don't go down there anymore. Also, i don't know if I've commented on your fics before (I'm bad about that) but I really enjoy pretty much all your writing and the way you handle the crew.

I don't HATE Simon/Kaylee, they're like kittens. Cute and adorable kittens, that Joss Whedon has in a bag and is dangling over a river. You just know it's not going to end well.
I actually think Kaylee might have had a near miss with some trauma and there may be more going on with her than anticipated. After all, she does have that scared Kaylee oh no violence reaction, to the point where it could be argued it's not just inexperience with guns, but an actual fear of them. Not sure why it doesn't effect her any other times, but that could be something.
According to Joss, the only two characters who have no ulterior motives for being on Serenity are Inara and Book (surprisingly).

For the record, Mal isn't wearing a gun when he hires Kaylee, if this theory has anything to it.
Actually, this is something I think I've discussed with Aliasse and Platonist before, but Mal doesn't seem to EVER just wear his gun around the ship, not unless he's heading out and dressed for trouble, or coming back from it, or there's something going on that has him on edge. He ALWAYS wears the gun outside, even if he's not wearing his browncoat, unless there's a reason or he's forced to wear his formals. There's a lot you can interpret from that. When he's not wearing his gun, that seems to indicate he's feeling fairly relaxed and safe (comparatively, this is Mal, he gets tense and annoyed at the drop of a poofy orange hat).
I've also wondered if he's concerned about being startled by one of his crew while on Serenity, among other things, because we've also seen how quick his reflexes and reactions can be. It could be he tries to wear his gun on ship as seldom as possible as a safety

I think that's an interesting and quite plausible theory about Kaylee. She treats Mal like a father figure, and he's so protective of her. And well-spotted about the gun. I think that that also signified something more generally about Mal's perception of Serenity. He's not at war anymore: Serenity is his home. And maybe he has to do some rough things to get by, and sure there are guns involved, but that roughness that he and the crew need outside Serenity isn't something he brings back to his home. Which is why those episodes where Serenity is invaded in some way – notably of course by Jubal Early – are so crushing.
Speaking of Jubal Early, how might Kaylee's encounter with him fit into your theory on her? He's very threatening, granted – but I've always thought she reacts almost too strongly – kind of like what you say above – as though it's not just fear but knowing fear.

I never noticed that about Mal before - situational awareness FTW! I'm not sure I would say that Kaylee overreacted to Early, though - I mean, the man just popped up right next to her in the engine room from out of nowhere - literally, they were in dead space- and starts acting all crazy and rape-happy - I would have shiat my pants. Kaylee was frozen with fear. It's possible she's had some bad experiences with guns (well, she was shot in the pilot, but other then that) but then again, could her behavior also be explained by having little to no personal experience with violence at all prior to boarding Serenity?

I agree with feather (thanks for reading by the way mate). Getting shot = bad experience with guns, I'd say. Also, Early = scary. I would have reacted exactly like she did. That doesn't mean she doesn't have it in her to be something different than wholesome and fluffy.

Of course, in the above comment when I say "too strongly" I'm not really comparing her to a normal person but to a super-human BDH who gets tortured by Niska with no aftereffects. Probably unfair to poor Miss Kayle. Early was pretty damn evil.
Still very intrigued by what your giggling suggests you have in store. :-)

I've heard it hypothesized before, I think there may be trauma, and Kaylee has glomped onto Mal, like clio said, as a father figure. Or at least a big brother figure, and that interaction is present almost from the exact moment Kaylee fixes the engine. That made Mal look twice, and the second look she's so bright and cheerful little sister cute that the part in Mal that's crying out for family immediately brings her on board.
It's pretty obvious that Mal and the other crew make Kaylee feel safe, though she's scared of River for a while because of the gun thing. Her exchange with Early clearly suggests that she expects Mal to protect her.
So trauma, I like, it gives Kaylee some depth and backstory. Rape is a little more uncertain, because of how Kaylee is about sex. She's open, she's earthly, she wants it! She even goes onto a strange ship and has sex with a stranger, and just think about what could have happened if Mal wasn't the person he is. That was a huge risk, very naive, not really consistent with a rape victim. Unless she's overcompensating, I don't quite see it. But who knows? Maybe she is, and that all ties in with some sort of blaming the victim inferiority thing. She definitely has the inferiority thing.

As I said in my email, really, really nice job with creepy River! And I can totally hear Kaylee saying that "he ain't even noticed" to herself, flirting with another guy and thinking about Simon the whole time.
I like the little bits of Jayne, too.

I'm definitely with the letting the kittens out of the bag, it's just Joss' fault that they're over a river. And a River.
I think River likes/doesn't mind Kaylee and Simon to be good for each other(at least to keep each other sorta happy and distracted, very needed after the events of Serenity.)
But hell hath no fury like a sister'd kill a boatload of reavers solo to save her beloved brother and then watch that brother cheated on. Seriously.
Simon and Kaylee? Never got them I admit. I think it's mostly because they're "there". Simon's never really been in a relationship and Kaylee's always up for anything with either affection or sex (preferably both).
Also? I think Kaylee's addicted to sex. There's uninhibited and then there's I'll-announce-my-dissatisfaction-with-batteries-in-a-cantina.
Mal and guns: I posited in Ice Cream Social that Mal sees Serenity as a kind of false safety-zone. I do like the perspective about Serenity being largely gun-free as a safegard against tetchy reactions.

'But hell hath no fury like a sister'd kill a boatload of reavers solo to save her beloved brother and then watch that brother cheated on.' - HEE! That's SUCH a great line - should've saved it for a fic! So you think Kaylee is in danger from River in this scenario?
'There's uninhibited and then there's I'll-announce-my-dissatisfaction-with-batteries-in-a-cantina.' - Double hee! But the poor lass is also being used for comedy effect. Unless you think that Joss would never allow a line for comic effect unless it added to the characterisation as well?

Oh, no, I think Joss is for the funny in whatever form it is to be had, including...highly uncomfortable.
I don't know, I think it accomplishes both. Kaylee has finally had it up to there with the wishy-washing of love triangles on Mal's boat I have a feeling, and it just happened to come out through that medium. But I stand by what I said. That ain't uninhibited, it's something else. for the record, my reaction was exactly like Mal's, and it lost some funny for me.
Well, maybe I'll come up with a new cunning line for a fic. Glad you liked it. I don't know how much physical danger Kaylee is in from River--people do have to take into account her actual personality, and not just that her brain has been tampered with and traumatized. I'm just saying Kaylee should have considered it, and might have if she were farther along in character development.
