FIREFLYGAMER

Dear Firefly / Gaming fans,

me and some classmates are working on a concept for creating a firefly game. Unfortunately the game isn't there yet, but you can help us out with that! At first, we try to research if there is any interest for creating a game like this, so your opinion is very important to us. Please fulfill this survey for is, so you can help us out with launching the game! The link to the survey is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BGW85LP At second, we want your suggestions about what you want to see in the game, what type of game it should be and why you think this game adds to the gaming market. Please mail all your opinions, ideas, suggestions and comments to Only4Firefly@hotmail.com

Herby many thanks and greetings, Lucas, Jonathan and Asmus

Havnt even heard of Firefly Universe Online ?

Ok did a search and as far as I can tell it looks awesome but for some strange reason fox is trying to stop them from making it.

I dont quite get the logical sense from it, but then what would I know.

Basically, its been in development for... at least a year now. (I've been following it for a year or so...) It WAS a MMORPG set in the firefly verse, there was also a video which had awesome landscapes/scenery and featured the Serenity Crew. Fox has made them remove it from the site.

(Mirror on youtube) Basically, as far as I understand, the whole thing is on hold. They also had to remove all their social networking sites.

According to their FAQ, they are trying to get it endorsed by Fox? However the name "Firefly Universe Online" has also been removed. Here is text, copied from FUO's login screen, its long : UPDATE 08.01.12: Q&AI Emails are coming in from those of you who are genuinely concerned as to both the status of the Firefly MMORPG, as well of DarkCryo herself, given the wake of our recent communication with parent copyright holders. We have thought to include everyone in our responses here.. What exactly is going on with Fox? After we decided to close down our publicly-accessible social venues on July 19th, 2012, we noticed a spike in activity on our website. Amongst the traffic, was Fox Entertainment Group. This was somewhat the point. If you've ever tried to get a conversation brewing with a Corporate giant, particularly as a humble indie crew, you'll appreciate how creative you really have to be. We generated a private message inviting them to call us directly. On July 25th, 2012, they did just that. As a Crew that has prided itself on complete transparency until now, this is likely where you would expect to read a verbatim transcript. Fox Legal, on the other hand, may not practice this same philosophy. They asked us the professional courtesy of maintaining a certain confidentiality. Everything you see happening now, is a result of that telephone conversation. Are you being shut down? No, Fox Entertainment Group has no ill-will toward DarkCryo Entertainment. To the contrary, the good people at Fox Legal sincerely wish us all well. As for the licensing of a Firefly MMORPG, with good reason, our communication did not simply come in the form of a cold-hearted cease and desist letter. This is where we write between the lines of keeping you informed whilst still respecting the privacy of Fox Entertainment Group. Fox Legal has a certain way of doing things, and in order to keep the channels of communication open, we need to demonstrate good faith and follow their preferred process. Very simply, their process requires our process to back itself up for the moment. This includes the removal of the FUO banner and video until further notice. Are [Fox Entertainment Group] forcing you to change the name? That all depends on how the title proceeds. Our conference call began with, "We have good news and bad", with a courtesy to publicize only the bad. We cannot speculate on their behalf as to whether Fox Entertainment Group will end up endorsing this endeavour, and whether that endorsement would include its working title. Fox Entertainment Group advised us to remove the Firefly title at this time, and we complied without hesitation. We did discuss renaming the MMORPG, yes, however doing so now may be premature, and would only be necessary should we proceed without endorsement. Do they like the idea? This is where our permission to relay the good news gets a little fuzzy, and we really prefer to error on the side of caution. Without mentioning individuals or positions, it is our understanding that the good people at Fox Entertainment Group were extremely impressed with the professional quality of our sites, imagery and video. This was rather humbling to hear from the powers of Hollywood, especially considering everything is work-in-progress. Are they just toying with us? Nope, they are only doing what is expected of them. Feed the Trolls, get back to work. Most people would be absolutely surprised at the good nature and sense of humour of those at Fox Legal. Why can't you release any details to the people whom need to know the details? When asked by Fox Entertainment Group to keep their communications in confidence, self-described Critics duplicating our private updates, defacing and reporting them out of context, would likely be a breach of trust. Since our proposal also included funding a Firefly series reboot, these actions are both counter-productive and self-defeating to any Browncoat effort attempting to relicense the Firefly franchise. In effort to combat this type of behaviour, it may become necessary to restrict our ability to keep devoted Firefly fans publicly informed herein. What's next? We continue corresponding with Fox Entertainment Group. In the meantime, we'll keep plugging away at those forums. Any further questions during this transition, feel free to email us at press@darkcryo.com. We always respond. Cheers -

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Survey complete.

Best of luck with the game. Sure would love to see one get done.

Yeah, it does take consideration if you are making a game -but it does sound like they are being reasonable.

I'm assuming, from reading it that their proposal to Fox included some sort of "MAKE A NEW SERIES!" reference in it. All in all I can't say for sure, as they are being very vague, and need to be. There are a couple more Q&A posted about this, if you'd like me to paste in?

Here you go! : )

Can you still launch the Sandbox this Winter? This is where we finally get to have some fun, albeit the intervention of Fox Entertainment Group has arrived at our doorstep a great deal later than originally anticipated. Successful endorsement of a Firefly MMORPG would result in a transfer of creative control, and subsequently more hands in the pot. At the same time, an independent MMORPG would require significant alterations to either the content or network socketing architecture. Both have their pros and cons, and neither guarantee speedy resolve. That being said, one way or another, we won't leave you completely empty handed for the Holidays. Please be assured, that while DarkCryo has adapted and evolved to overcome many challenges this past year, we are definitely not flying your MMORPG blind. We have long anticipated the welcoming of parent copyright holders, and have a myriad of contingency plans available for consideration. We are granting Fox Entertainment Group a 60 day window in which to become a major Stakeholder in this title, after which the decision of how we shall proceed will be left to vote by existing DarkCryo Stakeholders; our DCMartyrs and DCHeroes. Email your questions to press@darkcryo.com. Cheers - I am concerned over what might happen to creative direction if Fox reaches an agreement with Darkcryo. I am afraid of Accountants and advertising Suits deciding that the game needs to have "broader appeal", that it will be watered down to the lowest common denominator in a misguided attempt to make it "better". I am aware that you have a great deal of metrics, ranging from the questionaire about design direction with hundreds of personal comments, to emails and posts on the "social sites", even if I refused to visit them myself. I know I commented on about half the questions myself, like many others did. Firstly have there been any discussions on the matter, and have you shared the metrics you have gathered as a preventative means for those with their heads in the clouds? To quote Mr. Joss Whedon, "Sadly my opinions are not shared by powerful people". We have not yet had the opportunity to speak with Fox New Media regarding content, should we be so fortunate as to be asked our opinions. We are simply making an educated guess. We have spoken with credible sources regarding the challenges of partnerships with Fox Entertainment Group and Mutant Enemy Inc. Keep in mind that Firefly fanfic is almost always presented with a cease and desist order, better known as being Foxed, simply because they are story-altering. It is no secret that Mr. Whedon enjoys maintaining control over the evolution of his characters, but would likely not have the time to do so here. Imagine having to sign off on each quest, each structure, each NPC dialogue. This is why we were restricting it to a Sandbox release, so as not to offend Firefly fans with non-canonical storyline development. Should this title become endorsed, however, the bar immediately becomes raised. We are already subject to AAA anticipation, with not even a fraction of the resources of our AAA counterparts. Yet, gamers would both expect and demand traditional Firefly quest and storyline content. A fan-driven endeavour may attract a few Critics, however the rules are more relaxed, we get a little lenience, and the voice of the Fans actually count. In the past, we have had most generous proposals from existing 3rd party Firefly-related licensees with an interest to act as our Publisher, kind of a proxy license. Suggested recommendations came in the form of everything from payment model to mechanics. Your concern is most certainly shared by us all, albeit we're not those powerful people of which Mr. Whedon had eluded. What can I take to heart as the proverbial "line in the sand" which would cause Darkcryo to simply move on with a new name, etc? That is entirely up to you all to decide. We do owe it to all of you to first make every effort toward endorsement. Failing that, we will present before you all the options for your consideration. The timeline from our June 2011 press release until now is unfolding exactly as was modelled, yes even 20th intervention, so don't fret. We will not be making any decisions without you. This is a topic I personally have an opinion on, at least on what I personally see development companies do to shoot themselves in the foot. When I was playing EQ back in early 2000 I made a couple of aquaintences, both were Devs that were being paid to play EQ, to talk with players and develop metrics on what people like and dislike, etc. Then about a year and half or so after meeting these people, WoW was released. Today I haven't seen a development company go back to the starting point, they can't seem to see past WoW to the process that made it what it was at launch. They all want to emulate the success, but instead they only imitate a caricature of final product, not the success. Personally, I am in the same boat as you all are, I would rather share the game with 5000 people that are a joy to RP with, or just goof around in game being silly, rather than 100000 who are horrible to be around.. To get somewhere you've never been, you must do something you've never done. We spend hours upon hours reading the MMORPG obituaries, and the circumstances which led to their demise. We read your forum posts, your tweets and your blogs, watch your YouTube rants, and listen in to your podcasts. Even the few colourful comments directed at DarkCryo herself, allowed for us to upgrade our armour, and evolve to mold-breaking potential. So if you've ever had something to say about anyone in the MMORPG industry, we would safely bet our domain that we did hear your pain, and have already spounged it up. It was through insights like yours that paved the foundation for those metrics you spoke earlier, and we certainly look forward to a more round table game design discussion in upcoming Dev forums. Email your questions to press@darkcryo.com. Cheers -

UPDATE 08.19.12: NONEWS No news as of yet, 20th is likely still humming and hawing over our proposal. We've been working fairly intensely these past couple weeks at our day jobs as well, but should have a great deal more time available in September to devote to launching those forums. Cheers -

No problem! Im interested to see how it pans out as well. Here's the most recent:

UPDATE 08.27.12: UNLIKELYHEROES One would never think to suggest it, given the history of C&D's the Firefly fan community has received over these many years, but the senior counsel on staff at Fox Legal will likely end up becoming our biggest damn group of Heroes this side of the 'Verse. We do have some related developments to pass onto the DarkCryo community. Regrettably, the details of our communications with Fox Entertainment Group still require discrete confidence. This particular wave, however, will require DCHero and DCMartyr stakeholder attention. If this be you, we'll update you with all pertinent information in your awaited round table forums next month. Cheers -
