1) What's the collective FFF.net verdict on the relative merits of R2 vs. R1 Buffy boxsets? I got the impression that the picture quality was much better on R1, and that there were some more extras - is this fair? I'm in the UK, but I have a multi-region player and am quite happy to import R1 if necessary.

2) I noticed on amazon.co.uk the other day that there are cheaper versions of the R2 Buffy sets due for release in late January 2005. Are these different from the existing releases (which are themselves currently on offer on Amazon and elsewhere) - are they going to be vanilla, or differently packaged, or just the same thing cheaper?

If these questions have already been discussed to death on another thread here, or if there's a good answer elsewhere, just point me towards the right places. Thanks!

AMYEL

I'm in R1, so I never actually saw any of the R2 sets myself. But for the later seasons, the R2 sets are in widescreen. That's great if you like widescreen, but the show was never in widescreen and Joss is kind of irked about R2 doing that to his show. I also heard that there's some interesting things on screen because of that. Since the show was never meant to be in widescreen, there's some funny unintentional goofs-- crew member sitting in a corner of Buffy's dorm room, Nicholas Brendon's ass hanging out of his jeans in a scene in "Grave", etc.

They are packaged differently. Different covers, different disc designs, different menus, stuff like that. R2 also has a nice "storybook" format whereas the R1 has a horrible plastic pull-out thing. Really, R1 is horrible because the plastic doohickeys break and then you can no longer actually keep the DVDs in the case because they just fall out.

The only R1 extra that's not on R2 is a commentary for "Wild at Heart" by Seth Green, Marti Noxon, and Joss Whedon. It's HILARIOUS. Seriously the funniest 43 minutes I've ever gotten to listen to. The reason it's not on R2 is because the R2 set came out a few years before R1. Seth Green was free and willing to do a commentary one day (when the R2 set was already out) and Joss and Marti jumped at the chance. They were able to put the commentary on the R1 set before it came out but you unfortunate R2 people were way too late.

So my advice would be (if you haven't already gotten the DVDs since my reply is months after your post) that if you import anything, it would be the season 4 set.
