Hey everybody,

I was just wondering if Joss followed one of the basic guidelines of Vampires:

Are Angel and Spike unable to see themselves in a mirror?

I know that there is also the myth that Vampires are unable to change in their appearance (case-in-point: Interview with a Vampire, Kirsten Dunst's character hated the fact that she was forever stuck as a very young child) but that clearly isn't applied to Angel and Spike because they have definately changed with the times.

Does anybody know of others that Joss followed/didn't follow?

MAL: Sure I can.
SAFFRON: I'll die.
MAL: Well, as a courtesy, you might start
getting busy on that, cause all this chatter ain't doin' me any kindness.

I believe it's in the Angel episode "I Will Remember You", when Angel becomes human again and is able to see himself in the mirror for the first time, he is surprised at what his hair looks like. So vampires are unable to see themselves in the mirror in the Buffyverse.

I've always been curious about vampire hair-growth in the Buffyverse. It generally seems as though they cannot grow hair, as Angel and Spike are never seen with any stubble, and their hair does not really change. (They both had longer hair in the past, but it seems to get progressively shorter.) However, a couple flashbacks in Angel contradict this - in one, he has a long ridiculous mustache, and in another he has long hair in the 70s, when we previously saw him with short hair in the 50s.

OK, I'm rambling now, it's 10:35pm and I've been at work since 9:30am....

Yes, vampires in the Buffyverse are unable to see themselves in the mirror, and the unable to change thing to me just goes along with the obvious differences in "vamp-face" and the staking into dust. There are a few rules that Joss made up for his vampire world. The only problem I have now is the ability to watch any other movie or show about vampires as they don't follow the rules I know so well. Oh, and the seeing his reflection in "I Will Remember You" he is surprised, but not yet about his hair. That happens in the Pylea episodal arc when he sees himself in the mirror there because the rules are different in different dimensions. My only problem with the comment then was that he had just seen his hair looking like this the previous season, and didn't say a thing about it. As well as the fact that Vampires can be photographed and filmed, which he has seen, so he knows what his hair looks like. Just your average continuity issues. Don't even get me started on the others involving invitations, how old he really is, when the last time he had human blood was, and the list goes on. For the most part the consistency is very good. Just some things here and there that you can't help wondering if they missed, or just tried to slip past us in order to work with a particular plot line they liked that meant breaking the rules a little. But you just can't get it past the die hard fans!

first the simple thing: vampires are not supposed to have reflections. so no one can see them in a mirror, including themselves. it's often stated in Buffy and Angel and mostly they get it right.

about the changin thing. that's somewhat harder. they are not supposed to age, at least not physically, there are debates about whether they can mature mentally, as both Angel and Spike don't seem all that mature for their 200+ and 100+ years. but I think it was never stated that their hair didn't grow. Spike had longer and only half bleached hair in early season 7. that had to have been him not caring about his usual hair-dye (because of his mental problems after getting his soul) and letting it grow in dark. I can think of no other explanation. combined witht the Angel flashbackes with beard and without and with longer and shorter hair and so on. I think they do have normal hair growth or else they screwed up much too often. they usually do better in that department and it was not necessary to have an Angel flashback with beard or long hair or anything.

but I haven't seen all of Angel yet so maybe I'm not the expert to ask here.

I can't remember which episode, but I think it was season 1 of Buffy, when Willow stared at Angel's non-reflection in the mirror while he was talking to Giles. Then she suddenly asked, "How do you shave?" It had clearly been bothering her for some time. Angel never did answer her question.
