So seven seasons of the great show and each with a finalé to consider.
Which seasons final episode had the most impact/punch/emotion etc for you?

For me it is season 5: The Gift. There was something about the way she died with a look of subtle calm on her face... It made her death strangely peaceful. It also, at that point, gave the show some poetic closure.

well, tough one... so long ago now since i first watched the show but...

if you're talking 'impact and punch' then um,
season 2 used to really get me;
the confrontation, the xander interception, the death - and Buffy's exit (trying to be non spoilery!) for a long time i would've put my money on that finale.

but for emotion (and having lost none of its impact over the years) season five for sure.

season 7 still makes me laugh, jump and cry and ends with a beautiful grace note.

BUT - having said all that. Restless (S4 last ep) is probably still my favourite single episode.

(the episode before it - which is the actual finale - i think is dreadful)

i aint never made up my mind on Grave. A lotta good things going on but... i just don't know. The last three episodes are all a bit 'superman II' for my taste. But Willow and Giles is great stuff and Xander redeems himself after S2.

Yup. That would be my second choice. It was close between Five and Two.

I find Grave very disappointing; both as an episode and especially as the season finalé. That strange church thing coming out of the ground, along with the mis-judged orange blow-up doll attached to it is a bit insulting. Also for end the world about to take place there were some pretty relaxed looking traffic passing by in the background. A bit shoddy really.

actually I got the most shock and surprise from Season Six's finally....
I was falling on the floor in shock (and some laughter) as all the different parts of Season 6 were resolved so beautifully....
Gile's showing up! And laughing! Unstoppable Dark Willow being stopped.... and Spike's soul!

Joss has always found a new way to tell his stories, and resolve them with an interesting twist.... I never can guess, or see it coming.

Can't have just one - there are too many good season-enders in Buffy.

S1, because I really like your dress.
S2, because of... well, because of Angel.
S3, because the Mayor is a real snake.
S4, because I Am The Cheese.
S5, because She Saved The World. A Lot.
S6, because Evil Willow is even hotter than Lesbian Willow.
S7, because it's the FINAL finale, finally.

Really, how can you pick just one?

Interesting about your Season 4, because MY favorite bit for that was:

but yours is right here."

Ahhh yes. I figured you would say Season Seven. In many ways Chris I agree with you... But the poetry of Five wins me over... Just.

I always liked that too. It also established what was to come with season seven.

The finale to season 2. At the end of it, I turned off the tv, and sat quietly astonished. For the first time ever, I was in love with a tv show! Also 5 because it was equal to the emotinal impact of 2.

But, but...Spike's sacrifice...battling the First...the cookie dough speech..."He had to split..." spreading out the power...season seven's finale had way more coolness to it!!!

Oh, it was a great line, but you have to remember - the Cheese stands alone!

Oh yes, I always considered 'the cheese stands alone' to be a major clue in understanding 'Restless' (the truly final finale of S4)
I blogged about it here at my livejournal:

(I just dissecting Buffy the Vampire Slayer!)

I have to put my money down for "Restless". S1 finale was a good wrap up of the season long battle with The Master. S2 finale did nothing for me since I never bought her and Angel's relationship, so the OMG moment was more of a "meh" for me. S3 had probably the best battle of the series with all the students getting in on the action for once. S5 would have been the perfect series finale. S6 redeemed some of the whole season in my mind, especially with Xander's ordinariness ended up saving the world. And S7 was an average finale.

But "Restless" is my favorite finale in that they went completely against the grain and had something that was more "stream of consciousness" and more abstract and experimental than the traditional "Big Bad defeated" finale they had done three years in a row. It delved into the character's deeply, it touched on the themes of the series, and was still entertaining and kept the audience in mind, even though it was going out on a massive limb.

I had heard once that the S5 finale really WAS supposed to be the series finale - Joss wanted the show to end after S5. Season Five marked the end of Buffy's run on the WB network, but UPN apparently threw a bunch of money at Joss, so he had to resurrect Buffy for a new network!

For me, S5 couldn't be the end. I want my heroes to LIVE, dammit! S7 felt much more "conclusive" to me - it just FELT like the right ending to the whole series, closing it out with one massive battle, destroying everything we'd come to know - all the old enemies, the high school, the house, the cemetery, the entire town - in a monumental cataclysmic battle royale. Now THAT is the way to end a series!

Yup, there was just too much good about it. Caleb, played with creepy perfection by Nathan Fillion... Faith back fighting side by side with Buffy... Spike right there in the thick of it... Angel coming back... It just REALLY brought the entire seven seasons into focus for one big final FIGHT.

And I choke up a bit every time I see Buffy smile at the end... She finally gets to be a "normal" girl.
