I just love the character of Buffy. The image of Buffy holding a crossbow and wearing a prom dress is just a fabulous image... Sort of my favourite from TV.

Anyone have any other favourites?

Nice additions there Big 'C' Kirk is probably the most recognazable in terms of TV. That's a good one. Great photo of Brandon Lee. I had not seen that before.

River, River, River.... You know had Firefly continued she could well have been more of an iconic figure.

Tis a shame.

TV icons....here's a few :

Lucy Ricardo
Archie Bunker
Mary Richards
Sheriff Matt Dillon
Dobie Gillis
Ralph Kramden
Kwai Chang Cain
Batman (Adam West)
Superman (George Reeves)
Perry Mason
Hawkeye Pierce
Captain Picard
Maxwell Smart
Lone Ranger
Little Joe Cartwright

I think those TV Icons at least rival Miss Gellar's portrayal of Joss's Buffy in the collective American conscience.

There probably is'nt a better image than just that.

Buffy is a ledge!

Jack Bauer holding a gun is cool but just not the same. He does kick butt though.

I watched the entire lot of Buffy boxsets recently and it still has the best characters, one-liners, stories, special fx, humour + variety than anything else before or since.

Not even heroes has done that yet with all of its characters.

Well not trying to be awkward and speaking from here in England I only recognise:
Batman (Adam West)
Perry Mason
Captain Picard
Lone Ranger

That's not to say the others don't fit the bill, it's just that they don't leap out at me as much as those others. However they clearly do for you so that I guess fits the criteria. As an image that presents itself to you when mentioned, something like James Bond and that 'Lens' thing with the blood, or the Ghostbusters logo, or Indianna Jones with the whip and hat and to a better extent Lone Rangers face mask - all those I think work really well. In modern TV I think Joss nailed it with Buffy. The contrast with the little blonde girl and a crossbow in a prom dress is sublime... Well at least for me anyway. Much like the horses and Serenity flying over head in the opening credits to Firefly.

:D

Yeah Buffy did it so well. It is forever!

I will say one thing about Heroes. I know it is loved by many and I was at the start a huge fan. I honestly felt it would rival my love for Joss' work. However that second season of which I've only seen six thus far, has been a huge disappointment! Huge! I was absolutely dismayed. I won't explain why here, just in case I spoil things for someone who has yet to see it. But it went on to 'weaken' the premise established in the first season as a consequence.... Anyway I'm hoping it will pick up.

I'd hazzard a guess and say they were swept up with the success of it all and were caught off guard as to how much quality is demanded these days with a hit TV show. It is tough no doubt, and I hate to be so critical, because I'm trying to write my own show as we speak...well write anyway, and it is a really difficult thing to do. Once you establish a formula, which in itself is hard, you then have to fashion the following stories around that formula and not make it seem like the same thing. Even though it is the same thing because you need that formula in place so people can follow you, and you rarely deviate from it, unless it is to say 'look we're deviating from it' much like Buffy and the episodes 'The Body' 'Restless' and 'Hush'. Primarily though you stick to the formula week in week out.

What you mustn't do though I believe, is contradict where you've taken the audience previously, unless it is to establish a narrative conclusion. If however you go back and forth as was done with Heroes (in particular with Claires father) the contrivances breakdown the legitimacy of the story. This was the trouble I always had with the Star Trek Next Generation. The threat to the Enterprise was often so severe there seemed to be no way out, then in the last two minutes someone would do a 'double matrix binary overload to the main engine couplings' and all would be saved! Huh?!

Yes me too. I liked alot of the characters especially the cop.

Yes looking forward to Indy four. Not sure what part Shia LeBeouf will be playing. I'm just glad they have brought back Karen Allen. She was a huge part of why Raiders was so enjoyable in the first place.

If Heroes stayed as good as it's first season, or if it regains that in subsequent seasons, it may have a shot of being as good as Buffy...but face it everyone, as multi-season, multi-character series go, Buffy is the Queen of all shows (This from a die-hard Dark Angel fan, no less).
You can't count Firefly in that btw, it didn't even have a full season.
Only Northern Exposure is anywhere near Buffy, and misses mainly because of it's last season not being able to tie things us as lyrically as the prior seasons suggested it might have.

Ohhh thems good words Big 'C' well said.

I think Heroes is going to struggle to reclaim it's first seasons status by the very fact that they did everything in that first season. They should just have saved the Cheerleader... The 'Saving the World' should have come much later, after the key 'Heroes' had developed some kind of relationship.

I agree... Buffy ain't no Playboy Bunny!

I also agree that she is one of the greatest iconic figures. I've loved a lot of shows, but when it comes to rewatching many many times and always finding it full of depth and holding my interest, no other show holds up (for me) like BtVS.

Doesn't mean I won't watch and enjoy many other things (right now I'm in love with Dexter, go figure).

New Firefly fans should check this out: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15816

The only show that I think can rival Buffy...is Angel! Probably one of the most underrated shows ever, too.

Assuming that we are going for a visually iconic character and not someone who has the right ideals and does the right thing all the time then I don't think you can beat Buffy at the minute. Although Buffy fits the bill on the other counts as well. Only time will tell if someone will come along later.

I would like to add The Doctor to the mix and I would put forward the only real contender to Buffy. From a look point of view Tom Baker's Doctor with his big coat and long striped scarf is a good image. He also fits the other points as well, he does what no one else can, even if the cost is great, to make things right.

Reaching over to movies then:
Indy is an obvious first choice.
James Bond holding his PPK is another.
Ripley in the powerloader from Aliens (an absolute classic scene).
Batman as a silhouette in the dark.
The Man With No Name. Hat, cheroot, poncho and steely blue eyes.

"I don't believe in suicide, but if you'd like to try it it might cheer me up to watch."

Yes. I had forgotten about Kojack and his lollipop. It's a strong contender indeed.

Yes, Angel is very underated. I love the themes in Angel. Currently re-watching Angel season one, and I love how funny it is. I know most people love 'unshaven, cool, demon slayer Wesley' but I like him more slapstick and comical.

I just love the way he wedged that axe in the wall when trying to impress Cordelia's girlfriends. Cracked me up!

Tom with his scarf is an iconic figure for sure.

All good iconic figures. :D

I'd add KONG from the original King Kong movie. Especially the image of him standing on the Empire State.
