Hey All

Aside from BUFFY, obviously, my favorite post-modern (if you can call it that) vampire pop-culture icon is FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. From it's amazing opening action sequence, the chemistry between George and Quentin, it's slow build-up of suspense and it's Tex-Mex flavor and how it goes from crime thriller to all out monster mash halfway through the film, it's just a great movie-movie and one of my favorite Robert Rodriguez films.

I rented it a while back, and there was one part in the film that reminded me of BUFFY in an odd way. Near the end of the movie, when they're in the backroom with all the stuff the vampires have stolen from the truckers they've eaten over the years, George is talking to Harvey Keitel whose this former priest whose lost his faith in God because of his dead wife. And he tells him that he needs him now in battling these demons. And that all this has actually made him believe in God. He reasons that if vampires exist, then there has to be a heaven and God and angels to balance them out.

That always stuck out in my mind after seeing all 7 seasons of BUFFY, and the most they ever say about that balance is that there are "Heaven dimensions" (wtf?) and that "the jury's still out" on whether or not there is a God. You would think that with all these various vampires and demons and all sorts of creatures that go bump in the night, that there'd be some higher power out there to act if not as an enforcer, then as a balance. It would be highly inefficient for there to just a single teenage girl holding back the forces of evil. Of course there would be no show, but still...

You'd think that Joss would be the one to acknowledge this idea of spirituality within the horror/fantasy genre, instead of two of Harvey's bad boys more interested in a great genre action flick. But QT and Bob-Rod seem to have shown him up at his own game about a year earlier.

This is one thing that kinda bothers me about Joss' work in that he's a blanket existentialist. He's just "There's no God, just move on." IMHO, if you don't absolutely believe in God or a higher spiritual being, then at the very least you should keep an open mind about it. Why deny yourself the possibility of spirituality?

I dunno. What do you guys think? At the very least, do you think it's a really cool action movie?

SINGATE

Cool action flick broken into two parts, pre vampire activity to all hell breaks loose. The assemblage of talent in this movie is mind boggling.

Joss doesn't believe in God. Nothing in the show says that a God being doesn't exist. As you mention here, in the show they say that the jury is still out. That doesn't mean there is not God. That means that they're not really sure. It leaves the possability open if you (or any of the characters) want to believe in a higher power. He jsut didn't want the show to focus on the whole God issue. I actually liked that a great deal. I get uncomfortable when folks get to preaching at me.

Now as to From Dusk Till Dawn, that movie ROCKS!!
A crossbow, condoms filled with holy water, a supersoaker as a real weapon, a guitar made out of body parts and a guy called sex machine.

All I know is that my eight-year old likes Buffy, and would not like From Dusk Till Dawn due to it's gory nature.

When you take the question of faith into a classic TV show you ruin some of its Grandeur. When you impose an idea that you find Joss Whedon him self to a lesser degree because of a simple belief system your discouraging the show. For many years I was godless. I still am and even though my path may seem in accordance with the church of

dwells on the deadly sins of man I walk the path of kindness and forgiveness . With out walking gods path I still follow in its example.
As for the movie its still a good action flick."Pike isn't a name its fish."
