Hey, I like the guy. I don't know what some find so annoying about him (although I'm only on ep 8 of season 4, he doesn't, like, turn into a jerk or something, does he? Scratch that, I don't wanna know at this point). I like Luke Skywalker straight arrow types. Hell, it's nice that Buffy might hit it with someone who at least has heartbeat!

Hope I'm not jumpin' the gun Chrisisall

Wow, Chrisisall, you're really coming along with Buffy!

Yeah, I liked Riley too. I also liked his buddy Graham (the third one). Maybe Riley's "meant" for her/ maybe not, but I thought he was a decent guy and a little optimism in an occasionally very dark show.

When Riley and his friends walked through that door, and down to the staging area for the Initiative my mouth fell open. That was so Bond!
Season 4 is so rockin'.

Select to view spoiler:

I already looked ahead to see that Riley isn't listed in season 5 shows ater ep 10 or so, so I assume either he does turn into a jerk, he dies, or becomes a vampire (and then dies). Oh well, I'll enjoy him while I can.

I always liked him too. Her relationship with Angel had a lot more sturm und drang but it was good to see Buffy with a nice guy. And I just liked him--he was a decent person. What's wrong with that? "He was bland" was the biggest complaint. Well, he wasn't Angel. But she needed a change-up. I liked him and liked watching their relationship unfold.

I won't say much else since your only on ep 8.

But we're in the minority, I can tell you that.

I'm with you - I thought Riley was a great character, and very well-acted. (Plus, he's from Iowa, which is where I hail from!) I won't spoil anything, but his storyline in Season 5 is one of the best things about that year.

Do yourself a favor, and don't let people's negative opinions of Season 6 cloud your judgement. Some of the greatest episodes of the entire series are in Season 6, and it is one of my favorites - I don't really understand why some fans don't like it. (It has "Once More With Feeling", in my opinion the series' finest hour.)

And the Spike and Buffy "relationship" is completely believable and handled so well! I know it's hard to comprehend if you are only in Season 4, but it happens very organically through the development of both characters.

Plus:

Yes, I like Riley too. Like any of Joss's characters, he gets more interesting as time goes by and has his share of surprises like, well, the Initiative.

I've been a member of the Riley fan club for more than twenty years now. Nothing to do with the Buffyverse -- but even though neither she nor I have ever seen an episode with this character, my wife smiled with delight when she saw this thread's title.

If you haven't guessed, my wife's first name is Riley. And thanks -- I just love seeing that little-girl grin on her face.

Hey! Look at us all!

I liked Riley too - I think he offered Buffy her one chance at a "normal" relationship (well, relatively normal).

But he had such a hard act to follow - how could he compete with Angel? People just weren't prepared to give him a chance.

I kinda liked him when he was all dumb, goofy and awkward (that's more like me), and looking dangerously close to falling for Willow instead, which is where I really wanted it to go.

Chrisisall - am SOOOO impressed that you're up to season 4 - which is, incidentally, my favourite season, though other people hate it ....

I too have always loved, LOVED Riley - he's so masculine and cute - a lot more attractive than David B if you ask me!!!

Plus his character - farm boy with a secret is kinda sweet yet slightly sinister!! I also like the way he tends to be a bit clumsy and square ...

Maybe its something about DA fans liking an uncomplicatedly GOOD and slighly geeky love interest (I would reference Logan Cale here, if I could be bothered) ....

I respectfully disagree about Riley's exit being a kneejerk reaction to anything. If you watch season 4 carefully, you will see that Buffy's luke-warm feelings for Riley were there from the very beginning, and she NEVER had the passion for Riley that she had for Angel. Riley was always planned by the writers to be the rebound guy.

A key example of this would be when Willow is asking Buffy if she gets that tingly feeling in her stomach when thinking of riley, and Buffy keeps changing the subject and talking about how big Riley's arms are. (I forget which episode this was from in S4.)

but I AM thrilled to know that you are watching my favorite season of BtVS. I hope you will post more about it, because I totally love the last 3-4 episodes of the season (the actual season finale is quite unique and I encourage listening to the commentary by Joss after you watch the episode).

And I really hope you will ignore everyone else's opinions. I thought Season 5 was the weakest, but I know a lot of people who loved it...
And altho Season 6 is definitely different, it is still full of chewy goodness.
Have faith in Joss, good writing, and wonderful acting!

Zoot, this is my favourite season so far, I'm halfway through it, and am almost sad to be so close to the end! But sadder still that the fifth won't be as good. I almost want to stop with season 4 and just let it stay in my memory like it is now.
And yeah, torturous relationships suck, I had a couple myself early on and decided that no matter how intense they can be, that they're just another drug that wears off and leaves you in pain- which is NOT cool or 'meaningfull', just bad.
So give me Max and Logan, Lois and Clark, and Buffy and Riley. They're cool.

And Chrisisall, don't worry - season 5 is pretty damn great too. "The Body" in S5 is one of the most powerful pieces of television EVER.

BATMARLOWE

Chrisisall:

In season 5 the show does start it's turn toward the heavier subject matter. I know you've been reluctant to watch 6 and 7 but you really should watch 5. Some very important events happen in that season and you really should see them. Besides, 5 has what may be my favorite episode, "Fool for Love". But that's not really the point. The point is is that 5 is very important.

As I said, I like 5, but I hate 6 and 7. Yet I encourage you to watch all three of these seasons so you can form your own opinion and not pay so much attention to what we posters say. We all love this show, yet look at the wide range of opinion as to strongest and weakest seasons and episodes.

Since the show jumped networks at the end of 5, there's a definite break between 5 and 6. So I can understand (though discourage) not going on to 6 and 7. But don't stop at 4. Witness the events of 5 and form your own opinion.

Your BUFFY watchin' pal,

Chrisisall you're so fab! You're right season 4 rocks!

But don't stop - season 5 has some great individual episodes in it (epsecially the season opener) and season six gets pretty good at points too - season 5 is a low point for me, not liking Dawn particularly and all, but I reckon it picks up again in season 6 ... so keep watching ...

And as for tortuous relationships ... Tut tut, Chrisisall!! You don't think that dancing around each other for (exactly) one year and not doing anything, despite fancying each other rotten and then being shot in the heart immediately after the first kiss, followed by another year of being unable to touch, is tortuous?? Then I pity your poor wife!!!

But you’re right. In real life that kind of relationship would suck – as well as being HIGHLY unlikely to happen at all … but, it would appear that the TV watching populous find “nice” content and stable relationships boring as hell, so we have to have torture …. I for one never really believed the Buffy/ Riley ending – which you’ll see in time – I just didn’t believe it would play out that way – but anyway – watch it, see what you think and then let me know ….

I'm so glad I found this. I have been on other sites where people gleefully rip into the Riley character and I have always wondered why? Was his character so bad? The majority of the fans hated him because they will always want Angel with Buffy but did they ever give the Riley character a chance? Did they hate Parker half as much as they hated Riley?

I didn't have a problem with Riley being the love interest. It would have worked for her, she could have someone who could fight beside her and actually see her in daylight. ;-)

Funny isn't it? Angel stayed all purty looking for 200 years - meets Buffy and it all goes to hell! Just compare how he looks in Season 1 of Buffy, heck even Season 1 of Angel, to the end of that show. Boy did he change....

Riley was all cute, and muscular and...OK, shall stop now.

Hey! I just said the character was most similar to me! If you want to know what I look like, think like a cross between Jackson Brown and Mark Hamill (but in a more normal kinda way, I'm not claimin' to look that cool).

Sorry to let the girls down Chrisisall

BATMARLOWE

I think since most Riley-haters hated him simply because he wasn't Angel, they were just looking for reasons to justify it. No matter what quality Riley showed, it was something to dislike about him. They just weren't gonna let him win.

I did like seeing him in Season 6, though I agree the ep was weak. I liked that he was invlolved in the whole black ops thing and I LOVED his wife. And I think the "Nick and Nora Fury" line is one of the most clever pop-culture references in all of Buffydom. To tell the truth I'd like to see them again (as supporting characters) in the next Buffyverse thing--if there ever is one.

The main thing I found frustrating about this ep
is that Buffy says to Sam "He thinks I let him go". And obviously Buffy is sorry that all this time Riley has had this misunderstanding about their relationship.

But at end Buffy tells Riley "That night I never got the chance to tell you how sorry I was about what happened between us."

This line makes no sense because that's not why she was trying to catch Riley before he left. She was trying to catch him before he left to tell him to stay.

Maybe Buffy's last line to Riley in "As You Were" is more open to interpretation than I think it is. I can understand why Buffy would be sorry she never got the chance to tell Riley how sorry she was about what happened between them. But she says "that night". And "that night" can only refer to the night she was trying to not let him go.

So what's frustrating is that in "As You Were" Buffy's parting words to Riley refer to something that wasn't the case. I think the writers just screwed up.

More importantly, there was a missed opportunity to deal with a very important development in the lives of both these characters. 'Cause even if Riley has gotten Buffy out of his system, I would think it would blow him away to find out that Buffy had tried to stop him. Because that little tidbit of knowledge would completely change his perception of their relationship. I guess Sam tells him on the way to Nepal. Or maybe not. But I would have liked to have seen Buffy tell Riley she tried to stop him. And see his reaction.

At least that's the way I see it. But if someone can tell me why what Buffy said to Riley at the end there makes sense, please explain it to me.

I must add that I don't think Buffy should have run after Riley in the first place because Riley was right--Buffy wasn't in love with him.

As far as Parker goes I always wanted to see a scene like this: Buffy is strolling through a cemetery on patrol and a vamp pops up in front of her. Buffy says "Parker?" and he says "Yeah" and she just effortlessly stakes him. Buffy casually walks away as he crumbles to dust and she says "I've moved on." Could have worked as a teaser before the opening credits.

For those who are curious, I have asked Chrisisall to submit his picture to the Photo 'Verse...unfortunately he made some excuse or the other about not being able to....Guess we're stuck with our imagination!

And BatMarlowe - that's exactly what I felt about Riley's mistreatment at the hands of fans. He was just stuck in Angel's shadow. And I love the Parker idea!

(Chrisisall, Season 5 is fun! IMHO Glory is just the best Big Bad).
