There was a whole other (and VERY BIG) story happening for Buffy and co. but it took a backseat to Xander's tale. It was about time he had his own show! I can't believe I didn't watch this when it was on TV!!! And the look on Cordellia's face at the end was perfect.
Aside from Firefly, and a few Dark Angel episodes, TV doesn't get any better than this (or does it? I'm only 2/3 thru S3 now ).

Consistantly amazed Chrisisall

I've posted on this episode before and how it bucks the A,B,C storyline convention that's in most one hour shows. This is one of my favorite episodes of Buffy not just for that reason, but for just how well Nicholas Brendan portrays this character. Everyone's felt left out of a group from time to time. And this was shown to great effect in this show. I especially like the overblown romantic scene between Buffy and Angel that Xander interrupts. The B storylive taking the front seat was great...Frankly, if the episode had been about what was going on with the Hellmouth, I would have been wondering, Where's Xander?

I love Xandercentric episodes...more so before Anya shows up.

I guess I'd have to say Xander's my favourite character, but I like 'em all.
In Zeppo, he gets all the great lines, and he gets Faith!! While it was happening, I thought they were gonna make it a dream or something, but COOL, it really happened!
Too bad Xander didn't get a spin off.
'The Xander Files' woulda rocked.

Of the most memorable lines in the show, the ones I think are the funniest always come from Xander...and Giles, oddly enough.

In the second season...Giles, Buffy, Cordelia, and Jenny are walking and talking. Xander's whole side of the conversation was so funny...and the way that boring exposition scene is editted.."How come she didn't get a snotty...""Watcher's Pet!" And then the scene ends! An exposition scene that ends with a really funny joke! Sweet!

Giles to Spike: "When I want your opinion Spike...Well, I'll never want your opinion."

Xander in season three. The "Oh yes, its time will come" diatribe about retorting to Cordelia. The way he just goes back to speaking conversationally after that dramatic speech cracks me up.

Xander in season 4: "Nothing can defeat the penis!"

And many others! The only Xandercentric episodes I don't care for are Teacher's Pet and Incan Mummy Girl...and even they have their moments.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

Hey Chrisisall.

This was the episode I really wanted you to see. It is a classic episode. I remember when I saw this I felt a Xander spin-off would be so much fun.

The scene when he's questioning one of the dead guys by clasping him to the side of his car, and he accidentally knocks the guys head off with the mail box!!!!! Man did I find that funny! Absolutely hilarious! Great TV!

So glad you liked it. It's up there as one of my favourite episodes of Buffy.

More to come, I'm sure. Bad Girls was good too.
Wish totally freaked me out- it was told from Cordelia's POV, then SHE gets killed!! That reality would've remained permanent if not for Giles. Head trip.

All good choices bud, except I never liked 'Anne'. But the 'Wish' is great. In fact that whole notion could've been a wider arc that maybe spanned over four or five episodes.... But still there's more than enough great stuff in Season 3.

The Wish was delightfully bent, allright. It reminded me a little of a Flash episode where an explosion sent Barry 15 years into the future and he found a ravaged Central City that had had no 'Flash' to protect it. Except Wish was WAY better.
Anne was almost like an Outer Limits episode, that happened to have Buffy guest- starring in it. Instead of someone having to figure out an intricate escape plan out of that dimension, they had a Slayer on hand to kick dimensional demon ass so they could leave. I agree it wasn't great , but it sure had ME goin'!
What did you think of Amends? The snow made me think of a miracle, like somebody up there took pity on poor Angel and Buffy, for a Christmas present.

Although they lose a bit of the funny, wacky episodes, they make up for in dark, sad Buffy seasons. After season 5 I was a train wreck, and I mean that in a good way.

Yep, the Zeppo is one of the best of Season 3 or any other season. A perfect example of why this is such a great show. I've always wondered though, how many people got the reference when Cordelia called Xander "the Zeppo" of the group. Seems to me most people in Buffy's target audience wouldn't get it. Something I'd be happy to be wrong about.

But you gotta admit, someone like Cordelia would not know about Zeppo.

Not that it matters, it's a great episode and Xander's finest moment (although the "Yellow Crayon" scene is close competition for that award).

Keep us posted on your progress, Chrisisall. It's fun to get the reaction of a newbie experiencing BUFFY for the first time.

The friend I loaned Seasons 3-5 has finally sent them back so I'll be catching up to you as I rewatch them.

Two things I love about Anne. It includes a strong contender for my favorite bit of Buffy dialog:
(I'm doing this from memory so it's not exact.)
Buffy: Want to see my imitation of Gandhi?
(Buffy kicks bad guy in the head and kills him)
Lilly: Gandhi?
Buffy: You know, he was really pissed off.

The other is it's contribution to the character development of Chantarelle / Lilly / Anne through Buffy and Angel (Yes, she shows up again in Angel.) Although we meet her in just a handful of rare snapshots in time, her changes are as interesting and surprising as many of the regulars.

Yep I was into Amends. It was a perfect addition to the pace that season three had taken up to this point. In many ways this was/is the strength of Buffy. It was able to take you on many journey's emotionally through-out it's run, but one key fact was the show knew just at the right points the emotions to play to at any given time. Amends in particular has that great sense of resolve to many things that had been drifting around for a while. So I liked it for that.

The snow thing is typical Joss. He leaves it up to the viewer to decide for themselves wether it's divine intervention or not. Sort of "It's Your call" You wanna believe it's divine work then so be it, if you don't well fine it works on that level too... Take it where you want and enjoy.

Brilliant.

What I DO like about Anne/Lilly is that she adds so much to the continuity of the show THAT ONLY WE VIEWERS KNOW ABOUT. At the end of the episode "Anne", Lilly adopts Buffy's middle name and becomes Anne. By the time Angel meets her in L.A. she is such a different person (as a direct result of her interaction with Buffy) that Angel doesn't even recognize her from when he first met her in Sunnydale (in "Lie to Me"). Also, Angel doesn't know that she ever even met Buffy or that the source of her name is the love of his life - but we the viewers know. I was sitting there telling Angel (through the tv screen) "Hey, did you know she got her name from Buffy?". Plus, there's the whole connection between Anne and Gunn that pre-dated the Angel-Gunn meeting.

I think that Anne is great, maybe not solely as a character, but as one of Joss' famous devices for linking other characters and episodes together.

I think I can tell you that Wesley does not continue on Buffy without spoiling anything...He shifted over to Angel...but the circumstances surrounding his joining the team over there are bound to make your jaw drop, if ever you see it.

I don't think Joss was influenced by the Evil Dead movies, stylistically, but there's a sharpness of dialogue there that can't be denied. Plus, the idea of mixing humor while fighting grotesque monsters is there in spades. However, Evil Dead is decidedly non feminist, as all the women in the trilogy (save one) are evil at one point or another. I think this is why I prefer the first one to the other two...Ash is a very, very reluctant hero in that one. He's just as scared as the rest of them. This heroic streak doesn't really emerge until part 2. Ash is never really full blown heroic until the end of AOD. In Army of Darkness, women love Ash, and the men all want to be him. He's the hero, bound to save the day, even if he's gets horribly beaten up in the process. I think he eventually becomes what Xander always wanted to be.

Ash is a decidedly guys-only hero. My wife can't even watch a minute of him before she rolls her eyes and bolts. I forget who at this site said it, but he put it perfectly- Ash puts me in touch with my inner smart-ass.

Hey, at the end of this ride, does Xander ever just straight up pound a demon or some such thing into submission with his own two hands? You know, does he get a shot at opening up a can of creature whoop-ass?

Yeah the network asked ME if they would have a problem with delaying it because of Columbine. According to Marti they totally understood and agreed it should be shown at a later date. So it was shown for the first time during the summer.

While flipping through channels at the house of a friend who didn't have cable, we came across it and decided to watch it because we had heard good things about BUFFY but neither of us had seen it.

I was so impressed I think my jaw fell open. It was then and there that I became a Buffyite. So "Earshot" has a special place for me because it was the first episode I'd ever seen.

But given the content you can understand why the WB didn't want to show this just after Columbine.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was openly disappointed about Earshot getting moved back, specifically because the whole point was to NOT kill everybody at school. I think a few of the writers said the same thing, but ME did agree to the delay without protesting the decision.

Graduation Day part 2 was also delayed because of Columbine sensitivity. ME was pissed about THAT one, because the school violence that happened wasn't the students' faults, plus the students actually worked together for the common good. Joss openly encouraged people to try to get bootlegs from Canada if they wanted to see it sooner.

CUNNINGORANGETOQUE

This is a thread i just had to put input into.
The Zeppo is just such a smart episode, it's probably one of the best-written episodes of the series, in my opinion, because of how it deals with the different storylines.

I remember seeing it the first time it aired when i was 11(i am now 16 and a half), and saying to myself what a good episode it was.

IT'S THE REASON WHY MY LIVEJOURNAL IS CALLED "the_zeppo01"(nobody had taken "The Zeppo" at the time, i just decided to add the 01.
I didnt start my LJ until just over a year ago,but the name was planned for a long time, and i kept using it in online game rooms/msn name, etc.

SEASON 4 REFERNCE IN NEXT PARAGRAPH!!
It also doesn't hurt that Xander is one of my fave jossverse characters, because he's just a "normal" guy, not special abilities or anything, but he is an integral part of the scoobies. There is a reason he was "The Heart" in the Season 4 climax.

It has always been one of my fave episodes of television, and it's title has been an ever-going theme in my life, whenever i feel up, down, or anything!
It shows that yes, some people can be referred to as "The expendable" part of a group, but it shows that those people usually do the most important things, even if they may go unnoticed.
All throughout my life since that episode, i have been able to relate with that episode, and especially Xander.

'Tis a good episode.
