This phenomenon is now predictable and recurring. The list of critically acclaimed shows with small but passionate fan-bases being canceled in their first season but then going on to find greater success on DVD or in syndication just gets longer and longer. I have two observations to make:

1. These networks (not just Fox, btw) MUST learn to figure out when they have gold in their hands. What these "powers that be" lack is patience and a foreword view that goes beyond the next sweeps period. Firing brain dead executives is imperative. If it means no longer hiring candidates from Harvard Business School, so be it.

2. The Nielsen ratings system is outdated and irrelevant. Take Family Guy for instance. The Nielsens gave Fox not one clue that this show's DVD sets would sell 3 million copies and counting.

Any network that bases its decision-making solely on the Nielsens will miss out on the next big thing and even moderate TV successes. Not every new drama will take off like Lost or Desperate Housewives. Most shows need more time to find their audience. But worthy shows WILL find their audience whether those audience members have Nielsen boxes in their homes or not. The networks need to restructure their feedback paradigm and the advertisers need to give them the space to figure out a new way to collect more accurate viewing-habit data.

I quite agree. I'd add at least one thing:

3. Network programming people need to realize that shows might still be successful if they're not top-raters, contain multi-syllable words, and consist of more than product placements.

I guess that actually falls under your number 1.

New Regency Prod., a sister movie unit to Wonderfalls' Regency Television production company, hopes to develop a Wonderfalls feature film with Fuller and co-creator/co-executive producer Todd Holland. But it's unlikely there will be fresh TV episodes a la Family Guy, as contractual differences between actors and voice talent make reunifications trickier with live-action series.
...

Interesting, very interesting.
I'm in.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

A feature film would be great, but I think even a direct-to-dvd disc of a four episode story arc would be a doable thing, especially if they use the idea Holland and/or Fuller mentioned recently of an immaculate conception of Sharon.

OK, I'm convinced - I just ordered it. I have never seen an episode but I hadn't for firefly either.

And the stupid MPAA can thank the guy who cracked the DVD encryption because if I couldn't watch region 1 DVDs in the UK on my Linux box I would not have bought it!

Odd, I never thought of Wonderfalls as sci-fi/fantasy, but I guess I can understand why some people would think so.

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

Congratulations! You won't regret it - sort of. You won't regret owning the show, but if you're like me it'll piss you off all over again at how Faux does the King Herod number on its most promising babies.

I'd say it's slightly more fantasy than Joan of Arcadia, for what that's worth.

And while Joan is a decent show, I would gladly have traded it for more Wonderfalls....
