'Star Wars' Trilogy Debuts on DVD
Wed Sep 15, 2004

"Fans have eagerly awaited the first three "Star Wars" films on DVD, a release Lucas initially intended to delay until he finished "Episode III.

Some will be miffed that the original theatrical versions are not included in the "Star Wars" boxed set, which features only the special-edition versions Lucas issued in the late 1990s, with added effects and footage, including a scene between Harrison Ford (news)'s Han Solo and crime lord Jabba the Hutt in the first "Star Wars."

AP: Why did you change your mind and decide to put the original three movies out on DVD now?

Lucas: Just because the market has shifted so dramatically. A lot of people are getting very worried about piracy. That has really eaten dramatically into the sales. It really just came down to, there may not be a market when I wanted to bring it out, which was like, three years from now. So rather than just sit by and watch the whole thing fall apart, better to bring it out early and get it over with.

AP: Why did you rework the original trilogy into the special-edition versions in the late 1990s?

Lucas: To me, the special edition ones are the films I wanted to make. Anybody that makes films knows the film is never finished. It's abandoned or it's ripped out of your hands, and it's thrown into the marketplace, never finished. It's a very rare experience where you find a filmmaker who says, "That's exactly what I wanted. I got everything I needed. I made it just perfect. I'm going to put it out there." And even most artists, most painters, even composers would want to come back and redo their work now. They've got a new perspective on it, they've got more resources, they have better technology, and they can fix or finish the things that were never done. ... I wanted to actually finish the film the way it was meant to be when I was originally doing it. At the beginning, people went, "Don't you like it?" I said, "Well, the film only came out to be 25 or 30 percent of what I wanted it to be." They said, "What are you talking about?" So finally, I stopped saying that, but if you read any interviews for about an eight- or nine-year period there, it was all about how disappointed I was and how unhappy I was and what a dismal experience it was. You know, it's too bad you need to get kind of half a job done and never get to finish it. So this was my chance to finish it.

AP: Why not release both the originals and special editions on DVD?

Lucas: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. I'm the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they're going to throw rocks at me, they're going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

AP: Do you pay much attention to fan reactions to your choices?

Lucas: Not really. The movies are what the movies are. ... The thing about science-fiction fans and "Star Wars" fans is they're very independent-thinking people. They all think outside the box, but they all have very strong ideas about what should happen, and they think it should be their way. Which is fine, except I'm making the movies, so I should have it my way.

AP: After "Episode III," will you ever revisit "Star Wars"?

Lucas: Ultimately, I'm going to probably move it into television and let other people take it. I'm sort of preserving the feature film part for what has happened and never go there again, but I can go off into various offshoots and things. You know, I've got offshoot novels, I've got offshoot comics. So it's very easy to say, "Well, OK, that's that genre, and I'll find a really talented person to take it and create it." Just like the comic books and the novels are somebody else's way of doing it. I don't mind that. Some of it might turn out to be pretty good. If I get the right people involved, it could be interesting."

Lucas says,

So it's very easy to say, "Well, OK, that's that genre, and I'll find a really talented person to take it and create it."

Is he talking about Joss? If Joss made Serenity movies and Star Wars TV I wouldn't mind.

Of course, once Firefly's 10-year contract with Fox expires, priorities must change.

As soon as I read Lucas say he was looking for a really talented person to take it over and create it I thought of Joss.

Imagine how damn good the Star Wars universe would be if Joss was at the helm..

I think that a Star Wars TV series with Joss Whedon in command could be every bit as good as Firefly.

How do we get this idea to Joss??

As far as I'm concerned, Lucas took my childhood and crapped on it.
I would not have cared about what happened in IV, V, or VI. Let it be and let a new generation enjoy it.
But to 'remake' our 'Star Wars' was a terrible and selfish act.
There is a reason why it brought Sci-fi back to us, and to change one moment changes why we fell in love with it in the first place.

Well, after watching EP I and EP II I am not surprised of this man's attitude.

Maybe he was a visionary man way back, but now he is just into money making with a franchise that the people he craps on now made this powerful in the first place.

People loved the movies he originally made and made him rich and powerful.
Instead of having a little respect for the fans he shoves this crappy "remake" down our throats and doesn't bother if we choke?

I guess I will watch EP III, but I will not pay a single buck for it when watching it first.

If I decide it is worth a visit to the cinema, I will go, but after the first two EPs I am almost sure it won't be worth the money for a ticket.

Or I will wait until the cinema near me showes it some months later for 1.50 Euros and watch it then.

HAN SHOT FIRST!

I am just glad I found a new 'verse to sink into

My biggest issue with this whole thing is that Lucas has enough money to make the DVDs reversible. One side for the classic version, one side for the new shiney inserting hayden christensen in it digitally version (gah what a BAD idea). However, there is pretty much nothing that can stop me from watching them, even though I'll feel like crap afterwards, but I'm extremely devoted to Mark Hamill in particular, and the Star Wars 'verse as it once was. So we'll just see I suppose.

Am I the only one who agrees with Lucas, that it's his gorram creation? It's not like you can't still get the old-style trilogy, or have to even acknowledge the existance of any non-good prequels. I pretend lot's of "classic star wars" comics don't exist, because they suck. It's fiction. It only exists in your mind, so you can omit any incarnations you don't like. Think of the prequels as that crappy animated LOTR movie everyone hated.

Something seems wrong about this whole thing. Lucas starts out as a nobody trying to make some visionary art he came up with. The fans embrace his art and in turn make him a very very rich man. Lucas then has the money to make the art he so wanted in the first place and says "who cares about the fans"? Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth.

I don't think Star Wars is really Joss's forte. Star Wars is an action, light and dark, good and bad, right and wrong sort of thing. Joss loves gray too much. I don't think Joss would really go for the epic battle to stop some universe destroying power every season. It would get old far too quickly for him.

Yes, it's his gorram creation. Yes, he can release it as he chooses. Our reaction is ours though, same as his franchise is his.

To call his own films - undeniably classic no matter which way you choose to look at it or the eventual franchisising - "half finished" tells me this man had no clue what he really has done.

I don't think the originals were crap. And I don't think Joss should take over. What Lucas did was worlds away from what The Whedon does best.

Two different geniuses, each doing their dream. Never the twain shall meet...

In retrospect, its easy for Lucas to say "oh yeah well that first try was just half-finished" because of the technology that is available to him now. Originally, Star Wars was THE state of the art movie at the time. It actually, and quite literally, took my breath away. I will NEVER forget how I felt sitting in that theater the first time I saw the original movie. I absolutlely could NOT have moved from that seat. I was riveted.

Star Wars changed movies for me. Much like Joss has changed tv for me. There is no way in hell that I would ever want to take that back or change it in any way. It's a part of my youth and fandom that I cherish immeasurably. Let Lucas say whatever he wants. I don't care. I will love the original movies until the day I die.

I'm not saying the originals were crap (just to clarify).

I'm not buying the DVD's just to see the blasters being replaced with walkie-talkies.

Is your blaster/walkie-talkie reference from ET? Because I remember when they actually DID that. Digitally removed the government guys guns and put walkie-talkies in instead.

Did they actually go there for the Star Wars films too? Unbelievable.

I hope so,
I think it would be a terrible idea for Joss to waste a minute of his precious time on this damaged series...
I will always love the original Star Wars Trilogy, but the prequels are a waste...and the re-done DVDs are something I'll never bother to watch.

I feel good about Joss doing 'X-men 3' because he has always loved the X-men and is currently writing the comic, so doing the movie would be something in keeping with all of that.

But generally speaking Joss is more creative than any other person currently working in Hollywood and it would be ridiculous for him to be tied down into someone else's universe & characters when his own are so superior.

Ya know, two years ago, I ordered the original trilogy from Singapore on DVD. Yup, you heard me. Singapore. And no, it wasnt a crappy VHS to DVD burn, but an actual LaserDisk to DVD burn and the quality is just as good as any other store bought DVD I own.

Best 30 bucks I ever spent.

I know that movie makers like to think of films as their vision and what not, but when you compare the first movies with these last pieces of fecal matter, there is no contest.

The newer movies may be prettier but they are about as full of character and flavor as my Life Size Han Solo/Princess Leah cardboard cutout I had as a kid.

One thing I do like about the new box set: It doesnt say "Newly re-edited version" or "Director's Cut". Because anytime you have ONLY the Director's Cut available, then it shouldn't say Director's Cut. Just like Blade Runner. Only the DC version is available on DVD... unless you're like me. Get some techie to burn a Laserdisk version of what you want to DVD and ta-da! You now own the movie you wanted.

At Dragon Con, I sat in on a panel that shed some light on this issue.

They said that we would never see a re-release of the original trilogy, and its all because of George Lucas' ex-wife.

See....the rights to the original trilogy fell into their negotiated divorce settlement. Meaning, if he makes another dime from the re-selling of the original trilogy, she gets a piece of the action.

However, the new versions are exempt from that agreement. So, he can sell all he wants without giving her any money.

I dont know if this is the real reason, but I found it gorram interesting.

He also states the reason for not releasing the original edition costs money - because it would really tank wouldn't it.

I suspect the real reason is if he were to have released the two versions along side, we all know which version would have outsold the other.

Still, this way, he could make a bucket load on the box set, then release the originals - then again, pigs might fly. To me, its not about the fact that I'm seeing a "half finished" film - rather Lucas is ignoring the maxim that art is never finished, only abandoned.

The only valid additions to the new versions would be those that were in the original script but could not be filmed, or re-introducing cut sequences.

Its like PT Anderson saying there is a good AvP movie in the script he "wrote" (many an English teacher will criticise my use of this word for what he spews onto the page). In the WGA arbitration, every inch of his script was seen, and there wasn't a lot that wasn't filmed.

I did hear one bit of good news about the new DVDs: They took out Luke's wimpy scream in Empire Strikes Back. So the best movie of the three will no longer have anything that makes me cringe.

I also hear the Han/Guido incident was tweaked. Guido still shoots first, but maybe it won't be as bad.

What about Firefly? "Objects in Space" was re-edited for the DVD, with Inara saying something different to Mal than was originally shown on TV. The only people who will ever see the "River Hears Mal and Inara's Thoughts" scene as it was originally shown are the people who saw it on TV broadcast, originally. Sure, there are tapes of it out there, but eventually, the tapes will wear out, or get erased over, whereas the DVD format will last for years to come, with proper care.

Why did Joss change this scene? Why did we get an 'altered' "OiS" ep on our DVDs? Because the circumstances-- episodes being released out of order, or not being shown at all-- forced his hand and he put something in there as a sort of stop-gap-- an explanation for something that had the eps been shown in proper order would have been redundant. So he changes it in the DVD release. I don't hear people complaining over this.

Yes, I hate the prequels. They embody everything that was weak and flawed about the Original Trilogy and couple it with overblown FX that today looks like something in a computer game. They destroyed my faith in the George Lucas Star Wars machine. But I became a fan of SW when the Special Editions were released. Frankly, a lot of the alterations, I like. This is probably due to my perspective on the trilogy, though. I don't consider those who like the 70's and 80's releases to be stuck-up geeks or nerds, because I actually prefer fantasy and sci-fi films made before the advent of CGI (Alien, Aliens, Masters of the Universe, and Legend being prime examples), but I hope that people will not consider my fondness for the Special Editions as being indicative of lack of taste.

That said, I do think that Hayden Christiansen does look a tad evil in that scene.

I feel like I need to see Episode III, even though my gut tells me it will be another waste of time. So I have decided that I won't pay for it - instead, I'll pay to see "Serenity" again (as it will hopefully still be playing by the time "Star Wars" opens) and then sneak into "Star Wars" afterwards. Wonderful and Wise 'tash (and all you mere mortals who hang upon his every word):

I actually argued the pitiful state of the SW franchise with a co-worker today, until he finally confessed that he could give a rat's ass about Star Wars. He goes to see a movie. He doesn't care about the finer points. So be it.

I think JW could and would do a good job on TV versions of Star Wars, based on the story guidelines of that last trilogy we're never gonna get. You know, the one that would have picked up after the Rebel Alliance (does that wording seem right to Firefly fans?) victory at Endor. First, JW obviously is as much of a SW geek as any of us. Remember, Kaylee's got a miniature of Han in carbonite next to her hammock in the engine room. Secondly, JW is doing (or being considered to do) X3. So, he obviously doesn't have a problem chewing on another dog's bone, as long as there's still some meat on it.

He'd be a fool to turn down the opportunity to write, direct and maybe even produce correct Star Wars fiction. It's got to be the dream job of every cinematic artist, to return this property to its former stature. Think of the multitude that must have jumped for a chance to do LOTR justice... Think of the potential dialogue for recast Han, Leia, Luke and Wedge in a television series, if Joss/Tim were writing. I'd be on it like a duck on a june bug.

Lastly, I have a little trivia question that I came up with, which my co-worker honestly couldn't answer, though he professed to having seen all the SW movies:
Which live actor will have been in 4 of the 6 movies, after Star Wars III: The Sudden But Inevitable Betrayal goes to final credits? (Not puppet or robot.)

(EDIT: Okay, it's 5 of 6 now, on the DVD set. GL reedited one of the movies in which the actor did not originally appear. How's that for on-topic?)

Quizzically,

Hello everyone, I don't know if you guys check out pennyarcade but here is the link, it is very appropriate for this thread.

And I am not so sure Joss would be able to do such a good job with the Star Wars Universe. Not that he lacks talent or anything just that it would be very constrained and have a whole lot of oversight from many people at LucasArts. I don't think they would let his creative genius run wild with it. If they did, he would do a good job with it.

hmph....well :raspberry: to you too Lucas. Yeah sure this set will sell, but that's only because people's tapes have croaked and gone to VHS heaven. I know for one thing, I'm renting them from Netflix. Not going to waste $50 bucks on Lucas.

It's not so much the changes that tick me off, it's the fact that Lucas doesn't care that he wouldn't have been successful if the fans did not like the originals. He's got plenty of money to release both sets. And he'd make more than enough so that to give part of the profit to his ex-wife (if that part is true) wouldn't really make a dent in his personal financial gain at all. None of the reasons he's told the press could support a stupid marketing decision.

Ok, I read this, and I was like, "Yeah! Give it to Succatash! We'll help him!"

Lol, thanks. I changed it to Mutant Enemy.

Methinks it was more interesting the other way, actually.

I always wanted to quote myself, so here goes...

There's been no response, so either the answer's obvious, or no one knows it. Here's another hint: I think it's GL's secret hero of the series... Remember, no puppets or toys; live actor.

Questioningly,

zoid

You must mean Ian McDiarmid, Senator and Emperor Palpatine... yes?

Correct. Now I can sleep in peace...

And don't forget: By the end of the final episode (III), he'll be the absolute and unimpeachable despotic ruler of the Known Universe.

How bad does that suck? I can hardly wait to take the kids. I'm sure they'll want Emperor Palpatine figurines for Christmas...

With Admiration,

More evidence of Lucas crapping on the heads of his fans. What a tool! This is from imdb.com:

Quote:

Lucasfilm has quashed a Seattle, WA screening of Star Wars by a local improvisational comedy group that redubs movies live. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Saturday that Lucasfilm sent the nonprofit Jet City Improv a cease-and-desist letter after learning on an Internet site about plans for the screening. The group said that it was the first time in seven years of performing such spoofs that it has received such a letter. "In order to protect our copyright, anyone who plans to commercially exhibit our films has to go through the appropriate channels," a Lucasfilm spokeswoman told the newspaper.

That's hard to believe considering satire is usually considered fair usage under copyright law.

They could re-enact it but they can't show the movie in the background.

Too bad, that sounds funny.

DESANGRO

Does anybody intend to go see it in the theaters?

Rumours have it that there will be a farting Yoda, a Wookiee army, Anakin's eyes turning yellow, and (possibly) human sacrifice of all those cute Jedi kids in Episode 2.

Also, if you are a disillusioned ex-Star Wars fan, go here: www.chefelf.com/forums/index.php?showforum=4&prune_day=100&sort_by=Z-A

Don't be fooled by the official release of the Star Wars trilogy on DVD on September 21, 2004. Though it assumes the title of the original series, it is in fact the "special" edition, rereleased in all its Guido-shoots-back, CGI Jabba glory. And now, for even you special edition purists, Mr. Lucas is heading back to the vaults to digitally manipulate the faces of some of the actors so as to look more similar to the actors featured in the prequels. I can see how some people may find merit in this. But me, I just want the original versions, unadulterated, and put on DVD. If enough of us don't buy this "special" edition, maybe Mr. Lucas will get the message: you can do what you want with your own films, but please, at least give us a choice.

"the Star Wars Universe" has been nothing but a rotting, corporate, money-making corpse for over 20 twenty years. It's nothing but a "brand" now. The Ewoks killed off any true, mythic magic long ago. Since then, this is all just hype and toy-commercials. Lucas is a sell-out. He owns half of freakin' Hasbro, come on! He has become the Empire. He said it himself. Sad, but true.

The moment you started pandering to a target market, selling out your story, is the moment you blew it. Call Peter Jackson for some advice on filming a truly moving, mythic adventure, please.

By the way, Han shoots first. Period.

...The new Star Wars bonus DVD erases elements of your Xbox's firmware without informing you or giving you a chance to decline....aimed at punishing people who play the Star Wars DVD bonus disk in a modded Xbox.

Thank you, LucasArts. You've given me another good reason not to give you any more... although the fact that I don't like Star Wars much helps.

this new starwars film could sink fast

so long starwars

actually didn't the second one make less $ than the first?
and the cost of making each film is more and more...
of course they are still making a profit
(particularly w/the DVD sales)

however I'm not seeing the 3rd
I'm not putting another penny in Lucas' pocket

FORRESTWOLF

Y'know, I MET Lucas once. Went to this event I got into as a senior in high school - that would be in 1990, in case you're wondering :)

I sat down at a table with him, with a few other kids around. Got my nerve up - asked him my big question: "So, I've heard Star Wars was based on these movies by some guy named Kurosawa - is that true?" Mind you - I was 17. Had never seen said Kurosawa movies (I've seen one since), and LOVED Star Wars. Star Wars shaped my career choice, gorramit. So I was asking in a NICE way.

Lucas's one word response to a clueless little kid?

"No."

Sigh. I realized then he was a jerk, and he still is.
