I was wondering what other series you people think are similar to Firefly in that they were great and then network executives pulled the plug for some reason or another. I'll list some I can think of. I thought of giving a brief description and thoughts on each show but frankly there isn't much that hasn't been already said somewhere on the internet. Try IMDB. Anyway, here are shows I have personally seen that were cancelled in the middle of everything and I can heartily recommend:

The Prisoner
Twin Peaks
Brimstone
Total Recall 2070
Odyssey 5
Sleepwalkers
Nowhere Man
Crusade

And I know someone will say Wonderfalls. Never seen it myself.

Nothing Sacred
Cracker (1997 ABC version; damn shame Pastorelli died)
Spy Game
Brimstone
Freaks & Geeks
Futurama
Angel
The Invisible Man (2000 version)
That '80s Show (hey, I liked it more than That '70s Show...two words: Chyler Leigh)

And dozens of others whose names escape me now. I have "Wonderfalls" on TiVo; what I've seen is awesome..I'm nervous of watching them all, knowing that I'll have to wait until December for the DVD release, but I'm making progress.

I gotta second That's My Bush. That show had me rolling.

Usually there is one show a year that I think shows tremendous promise but never makes it but every so often I get the double whammy. One year I was really starting to like "Kindred the Embraced" and "Profit". Then they both got yanked. Kinda soured me on TV for a while (especially after the actor who played the head vampire in Kindred went home to England and got killed in a car accident - I always thought the network executives got some karma from that one). Then I saw two other shows, "Firefly" and "John Doe". ... ... I think we remember the rest.

editted to add: On a side note, one of the characters from Kindred went on to have a role on Angel as Virginia Bryce. And it was interesting that a show about vampires got canned one year before Buffy got started. Also, in Profit, the main character slept in a box naked. The opening credits for Firefly with the River in a box scene reminded me of that.

i give huge "I'm with ya" on Brimstone. I thought that show was extraordinary. I keep hoping that they will relase a boxed set of that show. Unfortunately, not only was it cult status... it was SMALL cult status. I fear that there will never be a boxed set release for it...

Another nod to Dark Angel -- not nearly as good as Firefly, but it had its moments and got sacked by the same gorram network as Firefly.

One of my favorite failures is Earth 2, lasted about as long as Firefly. I wish someone would try again with the premise of a crew of folks colonizing a new world.

One of the best Brimstone escapee's was Our Jubal Early playing a Carthaginian warrior.
The (cartoon) Tick was inspired lunacy. I loved the Dustin Hoffman-rainman inspired Sewer Urchin. Who can forget the Chamelian, "Can't....do.....Plaid!"

The first three picks are Fox victims.

Pinocchio: "Oh really?" -Knocks on the door and when a soldier comes to open it Pinocchio knocks him down and goes in.

I have to agree with Grounded. Miracles was an awesome show. ABC really jerked that show around a lot like FOX did to firefly. It was kind of a new X-files without ripping off the X-files.

Actually, the Millennium Season 1 box set just came out on DVD this past Tuesday (July 20); Harsh Realm is out in a box set (all aired episodes including the few they didn't) on August 24; and the animated Clerks series is collected in a 2-DVD box set titles "Clerks: Uncensored," all available from your local happy online e-tailer.

I also mentioned this topic in a recent blog here on the site, but you can go to TVShowsonDVD.com and do a search for some titles that may be out on DVD and you may not be aware of it. Also, you can sign on to the site (free) and vote for your favorite shows you wished were on DVD.

The show suffered, IMO, because Carter was expected to create a show like X-Files, and tried to live up to that. Had he not had the overt supernatural overtones maybe it would have lasted - then again we wouldn't have got that stunning episode at the end of season one with the angels and demons (as I recall, James Marsters may have been in that one?) Really need to see that episode again - really shouldn't splash out on that shiny DVD set.

Apologies in advance for kind of hijacking the thread...

Arcbeatle, I know it's out there on VHS. I saw it recently in a video rental store. The show never really had a chance to get going but there was a lot of promise. Not all the clans from the game are present (I never played but I got curious after watching the show and leafed through some of the material). From what I remember, the represented clans are Ventru, Gangrel, Toreador, Bruja, and Nosferatu. I don't know how closely the show parallels the game in other details.

Okay, back to the thread.

I've always thought there was a great degree of kinship between Firefly and Wonderfalls.

Both involved Tim Minear. Both were in the Friday Night Death Slot on FUX. Both had a comperable number of filmed eps.

And most importantly, both had characters that you loved so completely that it almost didn't matter what the story was this week----you already knew you were going to love it.

Dark Skies. Definite agreement. I love that alternate/revisionist history stuff. It's so tricky to pull off well.

Strange Luck. No doubt about it. I thought it has the most potential of all the X-Files spin-offs. Haven't thought about it for YEARS, and now I want to see it again. =(

How about SeaQuest DSV? For a series that was thematically similar to Star Trek TNG, I thought it was MUCH more sophisticated. And particle-holograms are cool.

I just posted on the General Discussions Forum about a series that wasn't S.F. and which I never saw, but was axed after 13 episodes: The Westerner. My dad really enjoyed it when it aired in 1960, and has commented several times since I turned him on to Firefly about the similarities between the two shows. He says that Firefly's sense of humor, no-nonsense action and all around guts kept reminding him of The Westerner. I imagine there's ZERO chance of my ever seeing it, but it's one I would LOVE to see someday. Maybe when past-viewing gets perfected =)

Actually, Jeremiah finished Season 2 (the entire season 2 aired in Canada) although there were only 15 or so episodes in the second season, compared to 20 in the first. That said, the remaining eps of Season 2 of Jeremiah are scheduled to air this September/October on Showtime...

And, for me, Wonderfalls was the ONLY series in the last decade or so to equal the depth of character and genius writing of Firefly... and I think Firefly was the best written show... EVER!

"Wonderfalls", created by Bryan Fuller (creator of the awesome Showtime grim reaper series "Dead Like Me" - watch it if ever you get the chance!) aired on FOX in March. Tim Minear of "Buffy", "Angel", and "Firefly" fame, was an executive producer of "Wonderfalls". It starred Canadian actress Caroline Dhavernas as Jaye, a snarky college grad at a gift shop located at Niagra Falls called Wonderfalls. She begins to think she's going crazy when items in the store (a wax lion with a smooshed face, a ceramic cow coffee creamer, among others) start talking to her and telling her to do certain things (not give a customer her change back, set up your sister with a deliveryman). It's the very antithesis to "Joan of Arcadia". Jaye is opinionated, forward, and witty, and the show plays more like a dark comedy. FOX, in its infinite wisdom and sensing that somehow an intelligent show got on the air, canned "Wonderfalls" after only four episodes had aired. Thankfully, the entire series will be coming to DVD on December 7th (along with Carnivale, a show I missed out on) so others can experience the wit and wonder that is "Wonderfalls". More information can be found at the websites below:

Yeah, Space: Above and Beyond got cancelled after finishing one season, but the season (and series) finale was a sort of cliff hanger. It closed out one story line (colonist POWs returned) but left the rest of the story (missing members of 58th squadron) as a cliffhanger. All they really had to do to finish the series satisfyingly (in my opinion) was make a 2 hour episode closing up all major story lines.

Hey. I just discovered this thread, and I figured that this would be a good time to resurrect it.

I got a whole list of shows that should've lasted longer than they should have. The usual suspects include the original STAR TREK, FUTURAMA, SPORTS NIGHT, MR. SHOW and UNDECLARED. But there was one show that was on at the same time as FIREFLY, and while it lasted a full half season longer and some change, it was equally screwed over, despite it being an unconventional genre approach and a critical darling. I am, of course, talking about BOOMTOWN, the greatest cop show you've never seen.

The overall structure, the emotional content, the characters (especially David McNorris, who has to be the most complex character to ever be on a network tv show) and the overall tone of the show was just a sight to behold. And even though the second season only lasted about nine eps, I'm still waiting on it's DVD release.

And one show that lasted only two episodes that has always stuck with me, even five years later, was show on ABC called WONDERLAND, which was set in a mental institution and deal with the staff that worked there. The pilot is one of the best pilots I've ever seen, and the Madonna/William Orbit theme song to it is one of the more haunting tunes you'd ever hear.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?
