But it's actually true! The cannon used by Mal in the opening sequence of the Firefly pilot episode "Serenity" displays the Weyland Yutani logo and name on its HUD. To double check I went to the DVD and took a photo of this moment.

If you have a Bluray edition of the episode (does it exist?) I bet you can actually read Weyland - Yutani Corp in the Cannon's HUD.

So this opens up a world of possibilities, had the series continued could there have been a crossover? Serenity crew land on LV-426, bring back a member of the crew with something attached to their face, which later falls off and bursts from their chest to run amok in the ducting of Serenity herself?!?

Could Serenity travel to the Alien homeworld and see the Alien war in action?

Are The Alliance and The Company, enemies?

Weyland-Yutani is the main reason our planet was referred to as Earth-That-Was in Firefly. If you recall, at the end of Alien: Resurrection, they returned to Earth and deemed it to be a shithole.

Weyland/Utanni has been refrenced as a mega corporation in several movies and TV shows. They also owned a shipyard on Star Trek TNG, and were clients of Wolfram and Hart on Angel.

Gags like that are common. "Oceanic" airlines, best known as the airline from LOST, has also been used in the movie Executive Descision, and TV shows like Chuck, JAG and Diagnosis Murder.

But hey - if you think refences like that make it all one universe - you'll really like the Tommy Westphall universe - which includes everything from Firefly and Trek, to Cheers, X-Files, Homocide and many others.... all existing in the mind of an autistic chld introduced in the final episode of St. Elsewhere:

There's a fanfic author out there that writes really interesting Alien/Firefly crossover fic, sure its far fetched but its well done and has been a lot of fun to read. They said they'd come out with a new one soon, but who knows?

Yep. And myopic. These are usually done as an homage to something that the creators are either a fan of, or calling back to their previous work. It's entirely deliberate, not an act of laziness.

Saying Hollywood is without imagination is a easy, lazy and ill-thought out argument 99% of the time anyway. There is plenty of imagination out there - it's just that "new" ideas rarely sell as well as what is established, so the companies stick with the safest bets over and over. Yes, that's me. We've discussed that before. You have a short memory.

Am I an insider? Nope, don't claim to be - but I am knowledgeable. As I have already explained, Im merely a teacher, but I do have more knowledge and experience in the area than most outside of the industry, and have a lot of contacts in the industry, from low level, to fairly high level.

You can not believe me, that's your choice. Folks believe all kinds of things that aren't true all the time. But you are doing so based on little knowledge other than what you've seen on TV - and, well, that's rarely indicative of great knowledge. I, on the other hand, am speaking from education, research, conversations with pros in the field, and personal experience. Im not claiming to know everything, but I know a few things. If you find that condescending, so be it.

There are literally THOUSANDS of original scripts submitted every year. Hundreds of them are bought every year. But take a look at box office records - original material, 9 times out of 10 - tanks. Movies based on established material - often successful, regardless of quality.

Take Joss as an example - two movies this spring. One original.... and it didn't even break even. The other, yeah, well, look at the records. Go ahead, look over the boxoffice for any given year in the last 20 - you'll see the same trend.

THAT is why they keep making derivative stuff - it's easier to sell. Period. The studios do it to make money.

The same it true for art. Do you SERIOUSLY believe that they couldn't make up a new company name rather than Weyland? Jesus, there are films where they come up with dozens of things like that that never even make it to the screen. It is 100% intentional when those things happen.

Here, you don't want to feel condescended to - stop leaping to ridiculous conclusions and then digging your heels in when their fallacies are pointed out. Damn.

Well, if the universe includes Doctor Who it must also include The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (since the Doctor claims to have met Arthur Dent) which means that the Earth is situated in sector ZZ9-Plural-Z-Alpha. The "plural" means that it is located at a sort of nexus between a multitude of parallel dimensions - so there's plenty of room for everything.

Also explains how come Serenity buzzes Caprica in the pilot of Battlestar Galactica (2000), why that ship in the Prometheus trailer looks like next-year's model Firefly, and why the Valley Forge from Silent Running is part of the fleet in the original Battlestar Galactica.

Well, the Predator movies canonically exist in the same universe, and our First Contact with the Yautja far predates FC with the xenomorphs.

But anyway, the Firefly 'verse includes only a handful of stars. There's almost certainly some sort of alien life out there beyond the rim, even if it's so far away the Alliance may never encounter it.

And who's to say that the generation ships that founded the 'verse were the only flight away from Earth-that-was? There may yet be brothers-of-man, who even now fight to survive. . .

Hell, we have only the Alliance's word (via Book, the shadow-puppets in HoG, and River's teacher) that Earth-that-was was actually abandoned, and we know how reliable historical accounts are. The poor folks who couldn't afford passage might well have managed to rebuild in the interrim. Earth-that-was might be Earth-that-still-is, having long since written off (or even forgotten) the prodigal voyagers, never even suspecting that they reached their destination.

True enough, and nature has formidable regenerative powers (of which there is much archaeological evidence). While the catastrophe alluded to in Firefly might have done a lot of damage, there's nothing that a population crash and industrial collapse would would not provide enough breathing room for a recovery. The surviving population would be more careful, and would, of course, have had no communication whatsoever with the departed space ships. BTW,SETI ignores the fact that there is much evidence that man made transmissions would be two attenuated a few light years out to be comprehensible (no matter what kind of tech was available to try and reassemble the signal). Much, much stronger signals would be needed. So no long term light-speed signals between earth-that-was and Alliance monitoring stations. Then again, maybe not. Would have made for some great episodes in season 7...
