Let's just suffice it to say that the season gets off to a rollicking start.

And some new locales appear in the opening credits, along with some changes to at least one old favorite.

This is going to be an interesting season, and one that I suspect will break my heart more than once. Maybe more than twice.

You may not be surprised to hear that at more than one point in the GoT saga I put the book down and swore never to return. Of course, it wasn't much more than a day before I read on.

So, a friend of mine was sharing his enthusiasm about the TV show but then another friend broke in to say what a sick and depraved and horribly violent pornathon it is.

Oh well. Guess it takes all kinds, right?

"sick and depraved and horribly violent pornathon" indeed, but that's human history. I thought the Season 3 opener last night was terrific.

As did I.

No spoilers here, but there are some odd juxtapositions of events going on - I'm about a third of the way through the second book, but things are happening in it that are happening in the first few eps of Season Three of the series, so they've very clearly jumbled some things around (some have changed considerably, but others are merely being changed as to when and where they happen) in the chronological order. It doesn't seem to throw off any of the story, either in the books or the show, but it's interesting to see.

Needless to say, this is my very favorite show that's on TV right now.

There are so many characters and storylines now it's sometimes difficult to keep them all straight in my head. Rose Leslie has a lot to say about the new season. She's more than a bit enchanting.

As a fan of all 5 books, season 3 is what I've been looking forward to for when my friends all get those couple of "Seriously? Holy Fuck!" moments...oh I cant wait.

Epp 3 had the first one, but with standard TV cliffhanger procedure, the ramifications arent really clear in the moment...but the event starts (continues?) one of the best character arcs in the series.

So will this "best character arc" become clear next week in episode 24? Right now everything's arcing in slow motion.

Well....probably not.

The character's whole world just changed, everything that he believed made him valuable is gone....the ways this affects him, the ways he changes, are incredibly dynamic, and as character study pretty fascinating....but they happen over a couple books, so I would guess more likely itll be a few epps down the road we start getting some of the really good parts of that....

U have to realize that GoT is not a standard swords and sorcery epic a la LotR...the greater focus on politics, and character buildup, creates a slower paced story than many are used to...also, season 3 of the show is only covering about half to two thirds of book 3, so they are really taking their time with the setup, but the payoff is gonna be tons o fun.

So many characters to introduce slows the pace at the start of seasons IMO, I felt that season 2 started pretty slow as well, but picked up strong as it rolled on.

Thanks for the heads up, because I haven't read the books. Your restraint in revealing the future is appreciated. I would have guessed it was going to be a female character, but now I know it will be a male.

It's funny because I generally don't even watch sword and sorcery movies. I liked Conan The Barbarian, and I liked The Sword and the Sorcerer back in the 80's, but since then I've mostly stayed away from the genre. But as you said GOT is not the standard fare. The ladies of GOT are what really got me to keep watching in the beginning.

Honestly, I wouldnt have gone even that far, but I assumed you watched epp 3 of the season from the way u wrote the post, and knew who I was referring to, so small apologies for even that much spoiler.

With THIS series, spoilers must be respected, just too many bombs-a-droppin to be spoiling all the fun...waiting for the reactions is a big part of my enjoyment of the TV series. My dad is into it, and a bunch of other friends who wouldnt b caught dead reading high fantasy novels...

Im not surprised by the general appeal of GoT, its very grounded in realistic(ish) medieval depictions..I think much easier than some high fantasy elves and dwarves D&D style romp for most to get into.

Its Definetly the characters for me as well, I am so impressed with the arcs they all take....some of the most heroic actions are taken by characters portrayed as the worst of the foul, and some of the darkest deeds are done by those who are considered noble and righteous.

I myself am partial to Dynearis (sp?). She has had a great love story, she is not giving up, and I suspect people say she's a dull actress (Emilia Clarke), but I see that she's subtle and tough as nails.

(I must qualify this post with the fact that I have not seen season 3 yet. I just recently devoured 1 and 2.)

Plus she gots her some dragons AND she got to get cozy with Jason Momoa.
