Hi all,
After noticing all the replies to the "Top 5 favorite TV shows" thread that contained Red Dwarf I've been wondering if anyone out there knows what's up with the status of the movie?
Has it been canceled? Or are they just taking their sweet gorram time in getting it done?
I've checked for anykind of news about it but have found none so how about you guys?
Im guessing those in the UK have better access to info on it than those of us here in the States.

PEACE

Here's what www.imdb.com has for information:

Plot Summary for
Red Dwarf: The Movie (2004)

RED DWARF THE MOVIE is set in the distant future where Homo Sapienoids, a fearsome combination of flesh and machine, and the next stage of human evolution, have taken over the solar system and almost wiped out the human race. The only survivors are the crews of long-haul space freighters that left Earth before the conflict began. The Sapienoids send forth fleets of Death Ships to hunt them down. One by one - the human ships fall, until only one remains. Its name - Red Dwarf...

Summary written by Paul Armstrong

Status: Pre-production
Comments: Filming is due to start in May 2004.

IMDB is a pretty standard industry source for movie/tv information. Generally what it posts is pretty reliable.

Question-- is the actress playing Kochanski the same one who played in the last season on TV? Hope so-- she's nice .

Oh, bugger! Now I have to wait for someone to wake up!

If my memory serves me correctly I believe there were 8 seasons.

Lister: There's got to be a way out. There hasn't been a prison built that could hold Derek Custer. Why don't we scrape away this mortar here, slide one of these bricks out, then using a rope weaved from strands of this hessian, rip up a kind of a pulley system so that when a guard comes in, using it as a trip wire, gets laid out, and we put Rimmer in the guard's uniform, he leads us out, we steal some swords, and fight our way back to the 'bug.
Kryten : Or we could use the teleporter.

Last I heard it was still on the way - seem to recall chatting with CapRahn on this one a ways back. Chris Barrie's Hollywood (well, Tomb Raider) career may have both helped and hindered.

If I recall rightly, its a scheduling matter, and a little bit of funding.

Shiny.

But, seasons or series. Over here in North America we have seasons that are typically 24 eps in length. But, series (at least that's what's on the DVD) seem to have 6 eps each.

Considering a season is the same thing as an series, just longer, there were 8 serieses...is that a word? Or really short seasons. I think it's the terminology between the UK and the USA difference.

I've been waiting for this movie to come out for a long time! I guess it makes sense that there would be a line connecting Browncoats and Dwarfers, aye?

Best RD line: Rimmer

Yeah, unfortunately a typical series of episodes in the UK is about 6 or so episodes

Last I've heard about the movie is that it is due to start filming this month in Australia. (Unfortunately, even this news was reported in October last year)

I really loved Red Dwarf.. but the last couple of series fell away for me. I think when Christine Chuckanski came on the crew they lost a little something..

Holly was my favourite(the male Holly). Followed very close by Rimmer(he is such a smeghead)

While I love visiting IMDB to read about movies I've already seen, I wouldn't trust it too much as a source of information for movies that have not been made yet. It has a tendency to treat every rumour as a fact. For example, while it has a page announcing that there will be a new Superman movie in 2006, don't bank on it...that film has been in development hell for more than five years.

I wouldn't be surprised if that Red Dwarf movie information has been up there for several years, with the anticipated release date changing periodically. Until filming actually begins don't get too excited.

I kind of doubt that a Red Dwarf film will get made, but I could be wrong. I never thought a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie would get made, but filming began a few weeks ago! That film looks promising, with a good cast.

And of course, I never thought a Firefly movie would be made either... I still can't quite believe it!

Yes, true. As I understand it, the IMDB gets updated by its users, so it's only as reliable as the average poster - who is as likely to be a fan as an insider.

The Red Dwarf movie has been bubbling under for years now - most recently, I think, because of Chris Barrie's Tomb Raider duties. Can't help but wonder if it isn't a little late, now, even if it does get made; the show hasn't been on the air (except as repeats) for what... five years?

There were eight seasons of Red Dwarf, each with six episodes except the final one, which had 8, IIRC. It was never quite the same once the co-creator left after season 6, though.

Favourite moment? Oh, too many, though most of them involve Rimmer. :-D I think 'Marooned' is my fave episode.

"They've taken Mr Rimmer! Sir, they've taken Mr Rimmer!"
"Quick, let's get out of here before they bring him back!"

"Father Ted" was Channel4. Anyway...
The storyline sounds like standard sci-fi fare, but knowing RD, there'll be a lot of p-taking.
Also, I'd like opinions on a RD/Firefly crossover I'm planning on doing. Should I try?

Ok I met Craig Charles at the memorobilia fair in Glasgow end of last summer and asked him about the film - there will be one but he wasn't sure exactly when it would filmed due to commitments by cast in other areas, but there will be one. I haven't been able to find a reliable source for exact dates but the rumours that Ive seen and heard day say it will be filmed at some point this year. I hope its soon cos there aint been much at the cinema thats been any good so far this year.
