My Son & I JUST got back from John Carter. As someone familiar with the books & comics, I have to say they did a very good job of staying true, while making necessary changes for the movie medium & today's cinematic sensibilities.
I forgive the uneven attention to physics demonstrated throughout because after all, this is pulp SF we're talkin' about here, not 2001: a Space Odyssey.
The production looks marvelous; I'm SO glad we saw it in 2D so I could really drink in the reds & browns correctly.
This film seems to have more in common with Lawrence Of Arabia in terms of tone, scope & pace than Star Wars, and for ME, that's a welcome thing.
A more rousing musical score might have been nice, or maybe it was better than I was hearing- the volume was REALLY low in that theatre, and just last month I was saying that Sherlock Holmes 2 was deafeningly loud... go figure.
Oh, and there was a reason they changed the title from John Carter of Mars to simply John Carter (but you have to see the movie- it's just a little thing).
This is a self contained flick- no tacked-on 'hint' of things to come, or such (in fact, it play like a one-shot movie). Another big plus with me.
I look SO forward to owning this movie- it might be the reason I finally get a Blu Ray player.

So, it's not Serenity or Matrix level "WOW" but it IS pretty gorram good IMO.

Hey Chris,

For my money, it was in the LotR ballpark, definitely. Loved this. Charming, thrilling, visually magnificent. Yes, Laurence of Arabia. I thought the story-telling instincts of the director were pitch perfect. The script was precise and dense, just the way I like it. And we learned just enough about the bad guys to fear and loath them thoroughly. And thank gawd the female Thark didn't have breasts and big booties (personal pet peeve with alien design there--I'm looking at you, Jim Cameron).

Yeah, best live action movie from a Pixar alum EVAAR!

Sadly, I saw a publicity still of John Carter battling a couple of monsters in front of a big rock cliff, and I said, " OH my God, it's Tim Allen fighting the pig-lizard in Galaxy Quest."

I haven't been able to watch a sci-fi movie with a straight face since I saw G Q.

Not a review or criticism, just an overwhelming obstacle on my part.

I'm not in the least familiar w/ the original stories, so there's little draw for me to check out this flick at first glance.

Previews sorta make me think of the SW prequels. , but with out Jar Jar or that annoying Annie

I'm glad to hear the decent review. However, I'm reminded that it comes from one who actually enjoyed the SW prequels AND Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I recommend SERENITY. It's a decent flick.

Ahh, ok then. Perhaps it was the Crystal Skull love that had scrambled my brain on this matter.

LOL, so true.

Speakin o Pixar - guess who got stuck with taking Kira aka "Crash" to see Brave ?
I DO wanna see it, but imma practically have to chain that bratling to the chair, you watch.
*eyeroll*

Chance of her wanting a bow after watching this, oh only about 150%!... me being a bit of a fan of epic preparedness, I've already got one hidden under the back seat of the car, took a while to find one with suction cup arrows instead of foam, it's a style thing, although she's dangerous enough already!

I'm wildy guessing here but does he arrive at a beach, fall down on his knees and shout "YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! OH, DAMN YOU! GODDAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!"
Realising then that he was actually on Earth all along after it had been shifted into a new orbit.
Hence the lack of 'Mars' because he isn't actually on Mars.

So, how would it sit with someone that knows absolutely zero about this apart from the trailer and what has been mentioned in the couple of threads on this site.
Is it easy enough to get into or do you need to know the source material?
What's the acting like?
My biggest problem is what I stated before in the other thread - the trailer makes it seem like a scifi Clash Of The Titans. All macho one-man army stuff with 99% CGI and cliched lines. Now I never completely judge a film solely because of a trailer but it plays it's part. The comments on here that compare it to Lawrence Of Arabia and LOTR have me intrigued and suggest that the trailer really doesn't do the film justice.
In your opinion would an uninitiated scifi fan get the same feeling (or the same out of the movie) or is it largely because you are already fans?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'm not a fan of the source material either, but not because I'm not aware of it. I did read the first of Burrough's Mars books, or at least tried to read it, but I didn't care for it. David Hartwell once said that the Golden Age of science fiction is twelve. Maybe if I had read it at that age I might have been enthralled by the action and adventure, but I didn't encounter it until much, much later, after I had become a fan of much more sophisticated books. I am also not a fan of movies that rely on spectacle over story, but I won't judge this film until I see it. Problem with that is I have next to no inclination to do so.

Howdy Browncoats!

Chris, your opening post was SPOT ON!!!

Went to the theater yesterday (Saturday/opening weekend) with the Mrs. and before getting there I asked her if she’d seen any reviews in her PEOPLE magazine? She said she had, and the reviews were lackluster.

My GAWD thank goodness I don’t pay attention to those bozos!!!!

The movie was fantastic!!!! I’ve been a fan of Burroughs since my early teens, and I think the man likely had a smile on his face as it screened across the white billowing clouds up in the Heave-sphere! Frank Frazetta was there too, sharing a drink with Robert E. Howard!

Great movie and Great intro for future fans of the worlds that I grew up with. My hat is off to Disney for sticking to the project and seeing it through. The world of Mars is amazing, and although I don’t think I’ll see it, I’d love to be around when humankind takes their first step in the red dust of our distant brother! My wife even enjoyed it so much that she was asking me about the books. A rare thing indeed….lol!

Our physical souls may be bound to Terra-firma for now, but human imagination helps to propel us forward…..let’s let loose of the ground, shall WE?

Trust me on this one Lwaves, the trailer does not do it justice. It is epic, well-acted, the CGI is seamless and I went in knowing nothing about the story, except that Frank Frazetta did a series of paintings based on the ERB books.

It is a well done sci-fi movie by the director who did Finding Nemo and Wall-E.

P.S. I looked up the Frazetta paintings and sketches and the resemblance to the movie is quite stunning.

Good for you Z. I was the same way, I thought, for a split, that I might not go. Then I said to hell with it, I like what I saw in the trailer and thought - "sci-fi, I'm there"

Boy am I glad I paid the critics no attention. It was an old time popcorn movie with a good story and spot-on pacing. I'm going back in a couple of weeks to see it again.

Ayep - and OF COURSE, soon as I agreed to take Kira her friends parents are like "Well, in THAT case...", which means imma have a passel of em, as usual - how exactly did I get 'volunteered' for this again ?
Imma go see it with my Ex first, that way I don't miss nothin when I go cat-herding the second time around, you know ?

And aye, Cars2 wasn't that hot, they went way cheap on the CGI and parts of the story are a bit overdone and strained... the kids will still like it, but it don't have the draw for adults the first one had.
Mater's tractor tippin all but slew me in the first one and he does get an epic shot of that which rolled me out of my chair in the second, but it really does pale in comparison to the first movie.

I might go see John Carter based on y'alls opinion, tho I wasn't originally planning to.

Howdy ShinyG!!!

Yepper, it’s time for us Sci/Fi folk to take a stand!

I had a co-worker of mine say last week that he thought it looked stupid!! John Carter jumping off of a meteor to kill big monkeys? Arriving on Mars in a spaceship to create havoc? I could see that he had no idea, the poor soul! I explained to him that this wasn’t some current script-writer trying to make a buck (or a trillion) it was from a writer of our not so distant past. A writer that I enjoy and admire.

Anyway this same co-worker has two young boys that he was just telling me are really into Star Wars. He also loves to be part of their lives as they watch the dvds together. What surprises await him if he were to see this movie with his young offspring?

********
Just a side note. I went to visit a friend of mine that owns a comic book store after the show and he told me that he was at the Comic-Expo in Dallas a few weeks ago and saw Adam Baldwin as he walked the isles just cruising around. The fans were all over him. I would have loved to have been there and pick his brain, but alas, I had to work.

Adam is a true working craftsman, as are Nathan, Jewel, Alan & all the others. I know that they are aware of their fans, but are they aware that we would support them, and Joss through a sequel of the BDM?

At some point it isn’t a matter of money (as long as you can break even) it’s a matter of art! The people creating the art are the ones that matter. The money investment will come for eons after the art has been created. An idea that FOX, in their limited mindset couldn‘t see upon cancellation of FF back in 02……just my opinion! Z

All I had to go on was the word of Lady Cavalier who'd just read A Princess of Mars and loved it, and my teenage familiarity with the art of Frank Frazetta. The best thing I can say about the story is that the movie actually has one. You do have to follow along. You do have to be interested in alien cultures and the peculiar politics that might develop on an alien world. That's what's so sad about the marketing, but predictable. Here we have an engrossing, slighty complex narrative, a credible love story, a fascinating portrait of an alien world and "oh nose!" says the suits, "We can'ts have pipples wanting that, we must turn movie into whizbang in trailers! Yes, more whizbang!" Very sad. Not to say the whizbang isn't there, but, to my mind, all of it is earned. One sequence, the first time JC really goes to town with his martian sword I found actually profoundly moving, heartbreaking even, the way the film maker cuts between the past and the present. Chris, you know the scene I mean? Did it hit you that way, too?

Quote:

Is it easy enough to get into or do you need to know the source material?
As I said, you do have to follow along and find the world itself interesting. There's a good deal of Martian vocabulary that they don't spoon feed you, so you have to catch on, but it's all pretty clear soon enough.

Quote:

What's the acting like?
I was very pleasantly surprised by the acting, across the board. Think British miniseries solid. A bunch of actors you want to immediately look up on IMDB. I was particularly impressed with Princess Dejah Thoris. Not only was she absolutely able to pull off wearing hardly anything, but she did it without losing her poise and nobility. And she was also quite convincing as an accomplished swordswoman.

John Carter was excellent as well. A good deal of southern gentlemanliness that any fan of Firefly should recognize and appreciate.

And Willem Defoe rocks the four armed green alien. Really, really fine work there. Andy Serkis better watch his back is all I'm sayin'.

Quote:

My biggest problem is what I stated before in the other thread - the trailer makes it seem like a scifi Clash Of The Titans. All macho one-man army stuff with 99% CGI and cliched lines.
Yeah, boo! Effing trailers, man. So estupido selling this property like it's Clash of the Titans dreck. Grrr! Argh! The thing I most and immediately appreciated about the film was the sense of storytelling. You know, like (nearly) every Pixar movie you've ever seen? You're just so thoroughly immersed in this world from the get go. Beautifully done, I say.

Thankyou all for your comments.
You have cleared up any doubt in me and I will now be seeing this movie, don't know when yet, but it will happen.

I'd take story over style any day and I certainly don't mind depth or paying attention. It's why movies are there IMO - to tell a story. Too many films these days spoon-feed you with what little plot they have and give you details that you already figured out leaving less time to develop the characters or the world. It's great that there seems to be a scifi film that seems to cater to the more intellectual viewer.
Plus I am familiar with Frazetta's art but just never connected the two. Should be interesting to see how it translates to the screen.

Thanks to you all again.

Movie marketing in the good old days -- June 15, 1981 --

The marketing executives are the new high priests of the movie business. It’s natural. They’re handling important sums of money. And they dispense the money dramatically, in big campaigns that flood out over the country. It’s not unusual for more to be spent on marketing a picture than on making it, and this could become commonplace. (Everybody takes it for granted that more is spent selling soap than manufacturing it.) Right now, the easier a project looks to market, the easier it is to finance. And the scope of what these priests think they can sell becomes narrower all the time. Except for the occasional prestige picture that offers middle-class group therapy (“Ordinary People,” “The Four Seasons”), it’s all fantasy. There isn’t a human being on the screen. Having lost the habitual moviegoers, the studio heads have no confidence that if they approve projects they like, an audience will be attracted; they’re trapped by empirical evidence to the contrary. And so they listen to the marketing men, with their priestly jargon—“normatives,” “skewed,” “bi-modal audience.” The mysterious phrases are soothing to the worried studio heads. And when the new geniuses are given what they want—comic-strip pulp or slobby horror—they swing into action heroically. Daggers menace us in TV commercials, magazines, and newspapers, and sometimes the slob movies do become hits. But if you boil out the feathers what it comes down to is: When there’s a flop, the marketing men cluck their tongues and say, “Well, boys, the picture just didn’t have it.” When there’s a hit, the marketing men pound their chests like King Kong and say, “Boy, did we know how to sell it!”

These marketing divisions are a relatively new development. (In earlier years, there were two much smaller departments—advertising and sales.) Their growing power isn’t in any special effectiveness in selling pictures; it’s in their ability to keep pictures that don’t lend themselves to an eye-popping thirty-second commercial from being made or, if they’re made, from being heard of. In the new Hollywood wisdom, anything to do with people’s lives belongs on TV. (As a result, television now makes contact with us in ways that movies no longer do.)

Yeah, I'm so pissed about the dumbass marketing for this movie. All they had to do--ALL THEY HAD TO DO--was flash one word across the screen as often as possible in every trailer: PIXAR. Pixar director, Pixar writer, Pixar effects, Pixar, Pixar, Pixar! It's a Pixar movie, in terms of quality, storytelling, originality.

And there were so many things to show in the trailers other than JC jumping around and big white gorillas. Dejah Thoris kicking ass and taking names after John tells her, "Stand behind me, Princess" and then after she dispatches several, mumbles "Maybe I should stand behind you."

Baby tharks bursting out of their shells.

Woola running across the sands.

Charming, fantastical stuff.

Ach! What a waste...

So we went on Sat. my dad was pretty excited about it. He thought it was fantastic. I thought it was allright, in the middle I was getting a little bored because too much was going on and I was getting confused. But the ending redeemed it for me, I really liked the ending. So I thought it was fairly good. We got trading cards with our tickets, anyone else? And my dad has been looking at his Dejah Thoris card a lot the last couple of days. :)

The director hated the trailers: “We shouldn’t be selling sci-fi and battles—I hate it when you’re selling a movie you don’t have. This feels just like ‘The Terminator,’ because every other action hero comes from this story. So our progenitor story feels derivative.” The director planned to emphasize the romance between John Carter and Princess Dejah Thoris of Mars: “It’s the ultimate Heathcliff and Cathy, because they’re even from different planets.” Disney's marketing wouldn't do it.

That sell never happened because it’s impossible for Disney to spend so much on toys—to lavishly and painstakingly build C.G.I. Tharks and Thoats and alien hovercraft—and then lay them aside and pitch their film as “The Notebook.”

The scope of what Disney thinks it can sell becomes narrower all the time. Less human, more comic-book and action heroic.

Two - He may have hated the trailers they wanted to release, but they might have actually gotten people to show up. As it stands, he personally approved all the existing trailers, which scuttled the movie.

Turns out Stanton personally forbade them to mention Pixar.

It's really sounding like he killed the movie with adoration - he just assumed that everyone in the world was clamoring for a John Carter movie, and refused to actually "sell" the thing.

In Burroughs’s version all the Martian creatures communicated telepathically—that is, silently. Now add another masterstroke from Burroughs’s fevered brain: all the Martians were naked. How could that not work on billboards? “Nude. Silent. Mars. Coming soon from those nice people who brought you ‘The Little Mermaid.’ ”

....Jesus, I forgot what its like trying to talk to you.

I meant - WTF is YOUR point??

Do you really think even the writer of that article was totally serious? In what universe would ANY studio put that much money into a movie where everyone was nude? Much less Disney. Its idiotic.

Nude would have been great.
Seriously, a little more skin, a more accurate ad campaign, a David Arnold score....

IT'S A JOKE! Storymark, don't you spend your workday around adolescents who need everything explained, over and over? Rather than sharpening them up, that job is dulling you down. Maybe you should punch your boss in the face to take out your frustrations.

LOL, by 'skin', I meant like what we saw on Enterprise or something.
The nude part was a joke.

Actually, Storymark, you never give yourself enough time. There doesn't seem to be a pause to reflect between you feeling confused & hostile and you posting a response. Even your signature is hostile.

Should you care to know, I liked John Carter of Mars!

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I saw the movie with my wife this past weekend. I expected some kind of obscene butchery. She went to see it just to humor me. We both came away having enjoyed ourselves. I would like to see this film turn a profit.

Never forget what this man is. You keep forgiving him his trespasses and speak to him as though he is a reasonable human being. You keep forgetting the things he's advocated. If you respond to this man again, you are being foolish.

Yeah, I saw that 2009 version too, it wasn't nearly as good as this one, it rather stunk, especially that weird bit about the air processors.

I liked how this one was set back in the day, that made life on Mars believeable, because people back then ujust didn't know, so the back then viewpoint made it seem plausible, easy to suspend one's disbelief. And I liked how it had Edgar Rice Burrows as a charactor, that was cool. It is getting better in my mind as time passes.
