Down the centuries you have slurred the meaning of the words, WE THE PEOPLE...

For me-

#1 The original Planet of the Apes, timeless classic!!!

#2 Tie between Beneath & the TV series. Beneath rocked me severely (loses point for no Roddy, though), while the series managed to let me live in the world a bit more (plus more McDowall is always a good thing, as is Jerry Finnerman's cinematography & Lalo Schifferin's music).

#3 Battle, yeah, I hear ya grumbling out there, but it reached me (the DVD cut)- what can I say?

#4 Conquest, awesome, especially the deleted scene at the end, SO chilling.

#5 Escape, the weakest movie IMO with one of the best scores (Jerry Goldsmith). The "rim of the Earth melt" line was particularly epic. A more plausible explanation of getting Taylor's fuel-expended, wet-circuited, 10 foot submerged ship to space readiness would have helped me a LOT on this, though...

Not rating the Burton mess.

Haven't seen Rise YET.

Good list. Mine almost mirrors yours.

7-Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

6-Escape From The Planet of the Apes

5-Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Yes, the screenwriters are fans of the original and it shows. Respectful addition to the world of Apes films. Although it does clash with Conquest, and Escape.

4-Battle for the Planet of the Apes. I enjoy this more each time I watch it. My estimation that it takes place about 100 years before the tv series.

3-Planet of the Apes(TV series 1974) Love this show more than practically anything on tv in the 70's...and that is saying a lot. Tragic it only lasted 14 episodes(Damn you CBS). I did read 2 of the 3 unproduced tv teleplays, and that was really depressing as they were both REALLY good.

2-Beneath The Planet of the Apes. Good memories of this. It was the first Ape film I ever watched, and thought it pushed the Sci-fi aspect a bit farther than the original film. Mutants were creepy, Apes were frikkin scary, and Chuck Heston showed up for the last 20 minutes. Great film.

1-Planet of the Apes(1968). One word: Perfection.

Tim Burton's Apes: As the years go by since I watched it in 2001, I forget more, and more about it. I would like that trend to continue.

Animated Apes(1975). Kid stuff, good for ages 3-6. Seriously.

In the same reality, I would concur.

Hey Oppyh, I was gonna do a comic to finish off the series for me & my Son, but that's so much work for an unlicensed project with no possible financial rewards- I was thinking a written story to tie up all the loose ends & bring it full circle with the movies (in a fanciful SF way- I don't see how, from a pure science standpoint, it could ever really work given the paradoxes). Have you any ideas on this? I have my own, some pretty radical ones, and my Wife says that I write well. She offered to be my editor (she's a writer her own self).

Apart form the original which I've seen several times now; the others I've only seen once, so my recall is a little off. I do remember liking Conquest though because it was much darker in look and this creeped me out as a kid. I can't honestly say it'd do that now and my opinion would probably change. However without evaluating with repeat viewing this is as it stands:

#1 The original Planet of the Apes. There's no topping this as the ending is arguably one of the best reveals in cinema.

#2 Rise - CGI & Motion Capture working perfectly within the story. Awesome

#3 Conquest - Dark and menacing (as I recall)

#4 Beneath - Not a fan of what this did really but I enjoyed the inclusion of Charlton again.

#5 Escape - Not a fan of the premise at all.

I never saw the TV shows so can't comment and the 2001 TIm Burton effort while wonderful to look at (Thank you Mr Rick Baker) & Paul Giamatti was incredible as Limbo, the human actors were strangely inaccessible. I think the specter of the original just rendered this one redundant. Though I did like the ending - (well I laughed anyway.)

That's great. I have done this myself. Well not written any finale for the series(it is very difficult to wrap up). But I figure if I had to wrap it up, I would have Virdon, Burke, and Galen reach New York(east) where they find an underground supercomputer manned by a secret society of both humans, and chimps(approx. 35 of them) working together for a better society. And highly advanced. With the data stored on the mini disc(which is recovered at some point since 'The Gladiators' ep). They find out what exactly went wrong. That's about all I have at this point. Either the construction of a new craft, or a time travel device would be the only logical choice. Remember it's sci-fi you can bend the rules a little.

I wrote 2 outlines for the continuation of episodes a couple years ago:

1-'The Tower' air date: 1/3/75

2-'The Gold Standard' air date: 1/18/75.

Yes, I even had air dates attached to them. I was in full geek mode.

I love the original PTA, it was amazingly cool and creepy at the end, with the creepy talking doll and the Statue of Liberty, wow what a great film! The second one was barely tollerable for me, being saved only by having Nova and Charlton in it. The others I only watched parts of because we started them and just couldn't suspend our disbelief enough to enjoy them. I haven't seen Rise yet but everyone I know says its really good, will I be able to suspend my disbelief enough for it? I'll have to see.

There wasn't enough gratuitous sex and outrageous cleavage in any of the Apes movies for them to be considered great movies. Besides, Mila Kunis and Summer Glau weren't in any of them either, so why waste your time.
