Has anyone else seen this show? The second episode was much better then the pilot, but pilots always have to have so much detail to get the ball rolling.
I am waiting to learn just what prompted the Queen to cast this spell. It has to be more then Snow White being more pretty.

I saw the pilot, and didn't hate it. I actually liked it more than "Grimm", in fact. I've got it recording, letting it build up a few eps so I can go on a 3- or 4-episode mini-marathon. I've found that if a show can't grab me that way (three or four episodes without a break), then I'm just not into it.

Hello Kwicko:

A marathon sounds like a good idea. My impression so far is that they will focus on the back story as much as on the present. I have never read any of the classic fairy tales, only seen film adaptations and from what I am hearing on the HULU forum those were tamed down.
This Queen has a serious axe to grind. I will say no more since I don't think you have seen the second episode. It does appear that there is alot to learn about the characters before the spell, so flashbacks will abound.

I think the flashbacks will be more interesting than the action in Storybrooke, since it seems the back story will be different than most people expect. The third episode aired last night, and Snow White's meeting with the prince was anything but love at first sight. I can't say I'll continue with the show for too long, but so far it is entertaining enough on a night I rarely watch anything else.

Is it a mini-series? I saw the pilot and have the other episodes recorded, but I can't see where this show is going. It seems like something they can't just drag out season after season. I mean with the flashback mentality eventually they have to run out of things to flashback to with out going farther and farther back.

And snow white prettier than the witch? Pssh snow white isn't what I'd call pretty.

Ginnifer Goodwin should have taken a clue from Morena on the short hair thing. Definitely not as attractive.

As far as I know it has not been promoted as a mini-series, but I can't see it going farther than a couple of seasons.

Ginnifer is playing just two characters. Mary Margaret Blanchard in Storybrooke and Snow White in Fairy Tale Land. Your confusion might be because the flashbacks to Fairy Tale Land have not been presented in a sequential, linear fashion. We first saw the events toward the end when the queen placed the curse on everyone and transported them to Storybrooke, the others have been going mostly in reverse order, although there has been some back and forth.

When she first met James (Prince Charming), she had been banished from the castle or fled out of fear of the queen, and she was living in the forest sort of Robin Hood style. But she's still the same character that was the daughter of the king, stepdaughter to the evil queen.

I know this isn't what you said but if anything it's the other way round. Ginnifer had short hair several years before Morena.
I would also say 'different' type of attractive. Ginnifer has the girl next door quality in her looks but Morena is more visually striking (partly because of her heritage).
Having said that I think they both look better with longer hair but that's just my personal preference.

As for the show I really like it and look forward to it each week but I can't really put my finger on why. It's basically light drama/fantasy and on the surface doesn't seem to have much to offer. But I found myself liking it more and more each episode. I really like the flashbacks more than the Storybrooke stuff but the parallels between both are usually good, if predictable. I like how it is playing with the established stories and making characters have more than one role.
Robert Carlyle makes a good Rumpelstilskin but the show has to go to Lana Parilla as Regina/Evil Queen. She is great and adds a perfect amount evilness to proceedings. There's a lot of questions about her that I'm looking forward to being answered like 'Does she still have her powers in Storybrooke?' as I don't believe we've seen her use any. And 'Why exactly did she adopt a kid?', 'Why is she so protective of him if she doesn't know who he really is?'

Looking forward to seeing where the show goes and hopefully they can keep it sustained.

Hey Som,
Before you get too excited Carla Gugino is not (currently) involved with this show and neither is JJ Abrams.
Sorry to put a dampener on it but there was some 'misguided' information there from JewelStaiteFan. Lana Parilla does bear a resemblance to Carla Gugino so I can understand that.

As for Ginnifer, I kind of like her but she's not Top Ten or anything if I was to create a list.
Do we finally disagree on something??

STORYMARK

For those who are Carla Gugino fans, she appeared last week on Justified - unofficially returning to the role of Karen Sisco (fellow Elmore Leonard character she played on a short lived series a few years back, also played by Yennifa Lopez in Out of Sight).

They can't actually call her that for legal reasons, but that's who she is playing. Is supposed to pop up a few more times this season.

He is, in my opinion, the absolute best thing on that show. I watch it mainly for his performances as Mr. Gold and Rumplestiltskin. As for the rest of it, it's not too bad but my main gripe is that, although Jennifer Morrison has been very good in several roles, I can't quite buy her character in this show ... at least not yet.

Robert Carlyle is great in everything and he does indeed have one of the best characters. His scenes are always a pleasure to watch and try to figure out what he is up to. He is an actor I've liked for many years.
Mild spoiler for next episode:

Select to view spoiler:

He gets to play opposite Lost's Emilie de Ravin as Belle in their take on Beauty And The Beast. She is one of my fave actresses so I am really looking forward to that.

Yeah, I don't quite get Morrison's character yet. It's nothing major but there's something not quite right in her performance as well. I haven't seen her in anything else so I can't say if it's her acting or actually part of the character. I get the Storybrooke characters in both our world and the fantasy world but something is off with her character. Guess I'll have to wait and see how her character develops.

Okay I've seen (and really like) Star Trek, although I didn't realise it was her playing Mummy Kirk until you pointed it out. It is such a small (but important) role that I don't think it gives a realistic enough time to judge someone's acting ability on. The same applies to Chris Hemsworth.
No, I've never seen House as I gave up/took a break from medical shows after years of watching ER. I hear it's good and I do like Hugh Laurie but I know him better from his comedy roles.

Like I say, I think it may be more of her character than the actress herself. It's only a minor little niggle but I'll pay closer attention and see if I can pinpoint it more accurately.

Ok L.

I watched the first episode.

I actually really like the kid Henry. He's awkward looking which is perfect. I like the premise and the juxtaposition of the worlds, but must confess I prefer the real world as opposed to the fantasy world. And I'm wondering if they really need to keep jumping between the two?...I'll mull this over a while.

As for Goodwin... It's no good she does CREEP the hell out of me. I don't know what it is about her but I genuinely am scared by her. She should play the evil queen! She's a fine actress though. Especially as the teacher, but yeeesh!

Interesting production values. I'd imagine this is a huge part of the show's budget...

While Carlyle only featured a little I can see his role is the juicy one. I'm a huge fan of Robert Carlyle. I used to love Hamish McBeth! I reckon he'll be one of Britain's finest distinguished actors in a few years and while I have nothing against Ewan McGregor, who is also a fine actor, Carlyle is, I think the more accomplished thespian....

Anyway. I'm intrigued enough to continue....

Glad you liked the first episode. It's nice, easy, light TV with a decent amount of potential if the creators don't screw it up.
I also like the fact that they don't stick to the Disney versions of the stories and Storybrooke characters are adapted to fit more than one fantasy character, but still be the same person.

Carlyle's role does increase and he gets some good stuff, plus a glimpse into his backstory which sets him up as one of the most interesting characters on the show.
I put him in the same league as Ewan McGregor, Tim Roth and Gary Oldman (although Roth isn't as high profile these days). He has done some fantastic films and he was the best actor/character in Stargate Universe. Plus he can easily change between mild-mannered to full on psychotic. I only saw parts of Hamish McBeth but what I did see I liked.

She is funny and her timing was great. Whenever "Once Upon a Time" ends I hope she gets to do comedy. I would like to her in something with humor.

Until then, I will watch her as the evil witch. I have this thing for evil women.

So, what did everyone think of the first season. I was pleasantly surprised.

This show feels like the spiritual successor to Lost. I'm assuming they have some creators in common with all the Lost references that I've seen. The Apollo bars and the Oceanic airplane and all that.

They did a really good job of keeping me guessing how things would line up in fairytale land. The twists on the standard fairy tales were smart IMO. The obstacles for Snow and Charming were clever.

The real world was interesting trying to figure out who knew what. Learning how magic worked in the real world. All of that stuff played out pretty well.

The finale seemed to do a good job of wrapping things up and then opening a whole new can of worms for the next season.

I think far and away Rumplestiltskin was the coolest character. It was so difficult to figure out which side he would pull for in each situation. The actor has done a great job making him feel like a sympathetic character while also a villain.

All in all this is the show I'm most looking forward to next season.
