PEACEKEEPER

Keeping order in every verse

Watched the first ep on Monday night. Started off with great expectations. The dystopian fucked up world of 2149 was gripping, dark and full of promise. Then we get to Cretaceous, alternate timeline Earth and we have total and utter , rehashed, dumbass, boring unbelievable MUSH.
We have Stephen Lang who looks like Avatar is still carrying on, we have the main family who are about as run of the mill as you can get, a bunch of teenagers who I already want to kill and no small comparison to OUTCASTS, which was cancelled after 8 eps by the BBC despite the fact that the tone of that series far surpassed this. I feel that this will be extinct by Xmas????

"Terrible Nova" - I missed the pilot, only caught the second one (the one with the really bad birds ripped straight from Pitch Black & Hitch).
Totally agree - by the end of the show (I am stubborn) I couldn't think of a single character that I didn't want to see hurt in some way. I'm thinking this is made for an undiscerning teen audience.

"What we’re left with is a soft opening for Terra Nova, and one that leaves it in a difficult space. If it can somehow keep ahold of the audience it had last night (pilot), then it’ll be fine for the foreseeable future. Considering how unlikely that is, I’m betting that we’ll see a move to Fridays before the season is out – Surely a Fringe lead-in would help? If not, then even getting it away from CBS’ strong comedy block would be a start – or some kind of behind-the-scenes shake-up to try and refocus the show to catch a wider audience."

I thought the pilot was pretty good. Haven't gotten around to the second episode yet, but I guess I gave the characters a lot of leeway considering it was just the first episode. Still I feel like they introduced everyone fairly well. I feel like I have a reason to care about all of them at least.

There's also enough mystery in the story to keep it going for a while. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a Lost disaster where the mysteries never had answers to begin with.

My first guess is that they're not really in an alternate timeline. I mean that one lady said the key to the future is controlling the past or whatever. So, either they're looking for a way to get to the original timeline or they're already in the original timeline and they're trying to hide it from the future. I just hope they introduce a major reveal like that fairly quickly and get the tension ratcheted up. I assume the sixers will be one one side and terra nova on the other. Hopefully both will have valid points and it will have a lot of grey area to play around in.

Right on! In fact I was just thinking it's a good show for me ta watch with my kid, it doesn't bore me to death(although the dialogue and characters are a bit cheezy it's good for the kids to see if they don't follow orders they get eaten ) and doesn't use language (yet) that bothers my mommy side... I will never be able to get into the Lucille Ball rip-off shows thay've got going now, so it's an alternative....

I saw the pilot,ya got any questions?

I hope they don't move it anywhere near Fringe, since that is a far superior show that is already having trouble maintaining an audience. If saddled with Terra Nova as a lead-in or lead-out you might as well count both of them as already canceled.

Ten minutes into this week's episode, my big question was: Where did the Slashers go? Y'know, the big reason why it's not safe to go OTG* after nightfall?
Guys go toolin' around OTG in an unarmored jeep on a stormy night, get a flat tire (no run-flats?), don't report back by morning, and the only suspects back at Home Base are... the Sixers?
The mutilated bodies are found: "Definitely not Sixers!"

If they're not gonna be consistent about the threats, I'm about done with this show.
The premise was silly to begin with: Apparently, the only selling point in the brochure was "Clean Air!"

Anyone notice the three characters named "Malcolm", "Wash", and "Reynolds"?
Also theres quite a bit of Firefly-esque jangly guitar in the soundtrack.

And the time portal in the pilot looked suspiciously like a Stargate...

There's a Malcolm and a Reynolds, but I think you misheard the other. It's Walsh, which is interesting because quite a few Firefly fans apparently heard Wash's name and thought it was Walsh.

I've only seen the pilot so far and I have the next episode but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I thought it was okay and did just about enough to keep me watching for a few more episodes but it pretty much ticked all the cliche boxes that it could and really didn't try anything new. A main lead who just happens to be law enforcement so we can get some gunplay and action from him. The moody, rebellious, troublesome son. The daughter who is smart (hmmm, I wonder if she'll figure out the rock equations). The tough but fair camp leader. His missing son (who we already know is still alive). And so on and so on.
The show needs a kick up the arse if it's going to succeed, it needs to get away from the cliches and find it's own way otherwise even Friday night won't be be good enough for it.

Of the new shows I've watched so far this season Terra Nova seems to fit into the same box as Ringer and Person Of Interest. All three have great potential and all three (so far) haven't really given me much. Ringer is keeping me going purely because it's SMG and the pilot was good. The last couple of episodes have been fairly 'meh' IMO. I had really high hopes for Person Of Interest and it is my favourite of the three I mentioned but again it follows too many cliches and I want to see more hints of what the computer can do. There was that slight hint at the end of the pilot that it may possess a greater AI than what we know of so far and I hope they go down that route more.

I'll give all three shows a bit longer and see how they develop but they all need to get themselves sorted out quickly.

EDIT:
I just did a quick check on IMDB and apparently it is 'Wash' as in short for Washington, her last name. Plus, aside from Malcolm and Reynolds being used there is also another character called Zoe.
I say it's just coincidence at the minute but I'm sure others will read more into it. If they add another name then I might change my mind - assuming I'm still watching by then.

Thanks for verifying the "wash" thing. I hung back from watching because the commercials looked bad. Was told by some fellow browncoats, the pilot was not bad,not outstanding but not aweful, so I tuned in and caught the "bird" episode.

This show is like a low budget Jurassic park, meets Avatar, while trying to do the intrigue of Lost, without any characters with depth and poor plot. Then again, I only watched the one episode.

Gotta say I am seriously dissappointed. I loove me some dinosaurs and wanted to love the show. Not sure I would even tune in to see dinosaurs (for those that know me, that is saying something).

I knew the show was going to be troubled when they shelved it in the spring. The piot originally was just an hour, but they padded it to 2 so they could market it overseas as a movie, should the get cancelled too quickly. And that was before they shut production down for months because they hadn't come up with any storylines past the pilot.

Well I like it well enough so far, I'm able to follow it which is important since I'm watching it alone and I have trouble following shows when I watch them alone. My favorite charactor is the little girl Zoey, she's so cute! And I like the dinosaurs. The other charactors haven't gotten my attention much but tonight is the amnesia episode and I always find those episodes of shows entertaining and interesting. That is weird about the names, that could be intentional, maybe the writer loves Firefly.

That's just what we need, an amnesia episode. No one has ever done that before.
Next week they contract a virus that transposes their consciousness from one body to the other.

I've decided to wait and watch this on Hulu when I have the time, or when I can generate the interest to watch it at all.

Hey Lwaves. Nice write up. I was thinking of giving this a go as I thought it may be something my girlfriend and I could watch together, but from what you've written I don't think It'll cut it.... I can't endure a show with that many clichés I must admit... Pity

Also interested in reading what you've said about Ringer. What d'you reckon? I wasn't bowled over with the premise but I am keen to support Sarah Michelle Gellar.

I realise I've not actually enaged with a new show since Castle started.... And I'm only just keeping up with that....

Well it was a good enough episode, I think my little brother might want to start watching it with me which would help me follow it better since he can help me with that. they got this virus which caused their brains to alter, anything like that interests me greatly, always has and probably always will. I don't reckon there will be any body switching though, its not that kind of show. when I was a little girl I enjoyed that kind of thing, but not now really, though the old Freaky Friday with Jodie Foster still holds a special place in my favorite childhood films list.

I think the show will get more complex as it goes on. Even if other people find it dull I don't really care because its fun for me.

Took me three attempts to sit through the pilot, it was so weak and UN-captivating.

Finally got around to TRY and watch the 2nd episode. I barely made it through the 1st half of the show.

There are so many things I hate about this show, the plot, the premise... I'm done w/ it.

I missed the first 20 minutes of the pilot. Then I was excusing lameness for the next 30 as possibly due to me missing the set up and then 1st episode exposition. The end for me was after the chase with the sixers & dinos - they used camera shake to try to fool us that it was more exciting than it really was, then after the action is over they are just standing there blabbing with guns raised, but the camera shake hadn't stopped!

I figured it out. The reason i'm so annoyed at this show. It took the wonder of the Mesozoic era, and turned into a gorram joke. And if humanity is trying to start over, breaking up into waring groups, as soon as you've arrived in your new/ old world, is a piss poor new beginning.

There was a good post at televisionwithoutpity:

"His name is Reynolds. It would seem that eventually all the character names from Firefly are going to show up, or at least there will be a scene where Malcolm, Reynolds, Zoe and Wash get together to hear Josh play this new song he wrote about how no one can take Skye from him."

But I found another. The leader of the Sixers (that group of seemingly normal colonists made into angry tribal-makeup'd outsiders by a powerful conspiracy, sporting a nickname that ends in "-ers") is named Mira. Mira, which is short for... (all together now)

Sorry 'bout the quick retort, but at the time I couldn't muster enough interest to bother summarizing it for you. It was basically a murder investigation that saw a couple of misdirections as to a suspect, interspersed with the family-friendly "let's watch a dinosaur egg hatch" scenes with young Zoe and her mother.

Or to put it even more bluntly,

Yeah I'll admit that one wasn't the best episode. It didn't even make a whole lot of sense how the one guy confessed. They were like "someone spread enough details around town to make it so someone else could confess". What kind of plan is that? Here let me explain how I murdered this dude in hopes that someone else will hear the details and decide to take the wrap for me. How often is that gonna work?

If you think that killing her is too soon then I have to ask if you watch American Horror Story. It's my favourite of the new shows this season but I'll put the rest in spoilers just in case.

Select to view spoiler:

There are six actors listed in the main credits and three of them are now dead after 11 episodes. Okay the three of them will be in the show as ghosts and one of them began the show already dead but they are still dead. Can't say I've seen that in a show since Randall & Hopkirk or Rentaghost.

I'm looking forward to seeing where they take AHS from this point on. Terra Nova kept me watching for a couple of episodes longer than I should have let it but it was too weak and other shows required my attention.
