So, it's doing pretty good, and getting great reviews!

Oppyh, you seen it yet? Anyone else?

I haven't, but I plan to.

A Gorilla jumps from a bridge onto a moving helicopter?! 'Swhat?! Apes take over, mankind grovels?! Sounds like great fun! I will of course be adjusting my level of expectations a smidge...

I loved it. Best movie of the summer. And Im not even a fan of the franchise.

Just saw it, and yeah, it's fun and definitely a summer movie, a little hokey in parts, but it's and ape movie, right? And I want a gorilla. As a friend of course, not a pet!
Andy Serkis of Smeagol/Gollum fame is in it, great stuff. Some of the moving camera work is pretty amazing too.
My question for Chris: will you be able to control yourself when you walk out of the theatre to walk upright and not make ape noises?

I wasn't expecting much from this movie. I hadn't read any reviews and had only seen the trailer, which was okay but nothing special.

Having said that I ended up really loving it. It's not perfect nor will it be a classic like the original but it is definitely a more than worthy addition to series. It does fit in to the mold of 'summer movie' but is a great example of what summer movies can be compared to the likes of other summer franchises.

Some points:

Caesar is a truly excellent character and outshines the humans by a long way.
The apes look fantastic with their facial expressions and actions and don't look fake. But....
It does suffers a little bit from the same thing as Jurassic Park - you know the apes aren't real but it's never distracting or OTT.
The bad guy elements are a little too cliched but acceptable.
The plot plays out in a nice, logical pattern of events that is never confusing or messy.
There are numerous (excellent) references to the original films in names, news reports, newspapers background TVs etc.

Overall I highly recommend it even if you are not a fan of the original. If you are then you won't be disappointed.

And some spoilers for those that have seen it:

Select to view spoiler:

If the films play out over the usual planned trilogy (don't know if this is the plan but it seems likely) then I'd like to see it go something like this -

Second film:
This would concentrate on the spread of the virus as it starts wiping out the humans and changing apes as it goes. The apes would gradually start encroaching in human areas and become more intelligent so naturally the humans would blame the apes for the virus and attack them. The apes would naturally defend themselves. By the end of the movie the apes would be the dominant species but not ruling over humans yet.

Third film:
This would basically show that the virus would have either run it's course or the humans left would have natural immunity. The apes would then be ruling over them, talking properly and we would see the establishment of societies and rules that would lead to world we know in POTA.

I don't know if there would be any kind of nuclear devastation and how they would fit this in as it doesn't really fit with the world today like it did when the original POTA was made. I hope they don't use it and either ignore the wasteland aspects of POTA or come up with another reason.

I think you'll really enjoy it Chris, and Sonisall as well.

And am I the only one that really liked Battle for TPOTA?

The dude who played the Gorilla is a Facebook friend, he and I chat occasionally. Rich Ridings. Cool guy.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I had 2 big summer movies that I couldn't wait for: Green Lantern, and Captain America.
I hated Green Lantern, and unfortunately didn't care for Cap all that much. The whole time I'm telling all my friends when asked if I was going to see Rise of the POTA that I was going to see it "just because it's and APES movie". I was dead wrong, this is a very entertaining, and well crafted film. Great for non-fans, and the hardcore alike. And as mentioned earlier there are a lot of hints, and clues regarding the original POTA. My only question is, how much profit is this thing gonna have to earn for Fox to greenlight a sequel? I feel there is much more story to be told.

Chrisisall,
It is a great origin film that fits perfectly into the timeline of APES. The writers were obviously big fans of the original. Well worth the scratch to see it. I'll be owning this on Blu-Ray.

America loves a winner!

Not seen it myself.

Gotta free ticket I might burn on this one, though.

Maybe.

Well, not quite perfectly. Taylor mentions in the original they he graduated High School in the 70's. This film being set in 2011 would make Taylor in his mid-60's at least for the launch of the Icarus.

You're right. I should have said storyline instead of time line. There are a few other inconsistencies(especially around ESCAPE, and CONQUEST) that I let slide.

Howdy fellow POTA browncoat fans!

I was finally able to catch RISE yesterday (9/2/11) and yes I loved it. A joy of a film. The wife and I smiled at one another whenever original POTA scripture was used …..“ It’s a madhouse!” There are many fun things like that in there.

Also to mention, Tyler Labine, has a part in the film as Robert Franklin ( you remember Mr. Labine from Tucker & Dale vs. Evil….right?)

Moving on……yes you can usually tell when writers are true blue fans of a film franchise. These folk were, and if there is a RISE2 & 3, I hope they are good.

There may be other films where I have found myself on the side of the animals or machines instead of humankind ( I can’t remember another right now). This is one where the movie audience will more than likely be on the side of the beasties the entire length of the show. GREAT film----five stars!!!!!

The only thing left to say is “ Damn those dirty humans! Damn them all to hell!”

PS: Also watched Conan the Barbarian yesterday and thought well of it, and now I’m waiting for JCM (John Carter of Mars).
