So you automatically know who my favourite Robot is from the thread title, obviously...

So who/what's your favourite?

Absolutely R2D2. One of the most spirited and brave robots I've ever seen, and the best deadpan snarker to be found in either galaxy.

LWAVES

I'll assume we are talking pure robots here and not creatures/beings in robotic suits, armour etc. (i.e. Daleks, cyborgs, computers etc don't count).

My selections would be (in no order):

K-9
Just because I'm a huge Doctor Who fan. He could sometimes be annoying.

Marvin
Depression was never funnier.

Kryten
Is there a funnier robot. So many great moments to pick from.

Wall-E
The lovestruck trash collector who showed humans the way forward.

R2-D2
It still gets me when he gets shot by the Jawas. Ultimately responsible for giving us the Original Trilogy. He's probably my overall favourite. Even the prequels couldn't ruin him.

Plus I'll always have a soft spot for V.I.N.Cent and B.O.B. from The Black Hole. Especially B.O.B. I loved my little figure of him as a kid.

*Squick*

You know, considering I've heard the Firefly-verse love bots described as having all the functional and conversational capacity of furniture... I think a body would have to clean out the bot THEMSELVES afterward.

Maybe if it was a male robot you could avoid that. Hey! Did I ever mention my crazy idea about a Firefly episode where some of the crew have their appearances used for some lines of love-bots, and the crew vows to destroy all the robots before they hit the market?

I don't tend to like robots/androids/cyborgs, but my favorites that I actually _do like are Data first and foremost. Then comes the Terminator in T2 Judgement Day, I actually get sad at the end when he melts, I think I cried the first time I watched it.

Hmm...let's see...tough choices ahead, and I know I'm gonna repeat someone contributors' ideas

On to the list:

1) K-9 -> one of the Doctor's best companions and seeing him again in nu!Who S2 with Sarah Jane?! Oh, I wept geek tears. Plus, the tribute to Elisabeth Sladen....beautiful representation of the little guy

2) C-3PO + RD-D2 -> can't a list of best robots evah without these two! They're like the unexpected narrators of the entire Star Wars Sexology/Hexology!

3) Robbie - the first time I saw Forbidden Planet and watched the relationship between Robbie and Altaira? Wanted my own robot butler/buddy right then and there!

4) Cameron Philips + "Uncle Bob" - "good" Terminators seem like oxymorons but these two TechCom Resistance Specials definitely added new dimensions to the concept of learning about and exercising free will. Plus the sheer amount of pounding they could sustain made for amazing fight scenes

5) HK-47 - Threat: All right, meatbags! For leaving off one of the most dangerous and hilarious assassins ever, and the best part of the Knights of the Old Republic series of video games, you're gonna get some some of HK-47's definition of "love!"

I think there are several categories that are difficult to compare with one another

Robot played by a human with very human traits just a little bit off divides into "sexy girl who never met earth before" thing which works well with mermaids and aliens and "tin woodman."Stereotyping, the girl is an ingenue who can throw people through walls, the guy is a brainiac who has low people skills.
http://www.webwombat.com.au/lifestyle/fashion_beauty/images/helfer-2.J
PG

Robot played by a human in a robot costume with a robot personality. Sometimes this fits into one of the above, but sometimes it's more robotic in its nature.

Non human robots with human characteristics.

Non-human robots with non-human characteristics.

It all comes down to #5 vs #6

Ah, yes, HK-47 is also up there for personality and amusing factor, but seeing as how he's also the robotic version of a dangerous psychopath, and installing a morality chip in him just makes him creeeeepy, he's not technically a robot you'd want to pal around with.

Not sure why people want human-like robots. Chances are they wouldn't have the features to accommodate human lust, but if they did, it would probably be really uncomfortable. Maybe electrocution uncomfortable. Plus, any equipment malfunction is going to be potentially deadly with a robotic companion as opposed to merely inconvenient with a regular human.

I agree with Byte, too many chances for something to malfunction there, I don't understand why people want to do that either Byte.

But I still think Data's line about being fully functional in multiple techniques is one of my favorites, it makes me laugh hard every time.

Also Chris, I like the version of robbie from Forbidden Planet better. The large head dome is much more interesting than the bulbous pod.

What about Marvin I ask?

There he is, brain the size of a planet and you can't even give him the small dignity of including him on your miserable little list of "favorite robots". Favorite? Hah. If humans cared so much about robots they wouldn't program them with "Genuine People Personalities" and then forget to enable the happiness module, nor would they make them fifty thousand times more intelligent than Stephen Fry and then ask them to park cars or pick small bits of paper off the floor. They might even do something about the terrible pain in all the diodes down their left hand side.

I think you ought to know that Marvin is probably feeling very depressed. I hope he's somewhere in a bar sharing a bottle of Old Fortran with Bender - who has an orthodontically inadvisable suggestion to put to whoever left him of the list, too.

I quite liked the movie Marvin but I have to support the low-budget BBC version:

Years ago (when the world was young) I spent a happy day at a School Fete wearing a not-very-good cardboard and tinfoil Marvin outfit (genuine 555-driven blinking lights and an old baby monitor for the voice). Uncomfortable, but a good excuse to wander around and be rude and miserable to people. Hey - I was a kid.

Fortunately, while men may now being lame...

I'm surprised a little bit that this thread isn't as Cameron Phillips dominates as one might suspect.

(Shirley is hot and creepy as well)

But aside from being hot, Summer also makes an awesome robot.

They have the whole ep. for those not initiated. It's less of a "let the bodies hit the floor" sort of day for her.

Correction on TSCC, start with the pilot, they have it on netflix now for streaming. It doesn't suck. I was noticing it notably lacking in the usual moral values set up of television. There are weakpoints in the show, but at this point, if something it's globalist totalitarian hegemony propaganda, it's way ahead of the pack.
