arner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, "In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield."

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on "The Cold Light of Day" and stars in the upcoming "Immortals," opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Interesting that American icons such Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man are all now being portrayed by British actors.

Either, way, I personally think he's a good choice...but still, for a fair trade we should get an American actor to portray James Bond once Daniel Craig's term is up.

Huh, wha....?

They just HAD a new Superman,.... why can't they just stick w/ one actor and be done w/ it ?

The problem is Superman Returns sucked and Warnor Bros. recognizes that, so they don't want anyone connected with that movie to be a part of this new one...sorry Brandon Routh.

I still think Sean Maher would make a better Clark.

(For Rao's sake, stop casting Superman!! "Superman" is just a costume Clark wears, cast the idealistic reporter, not the cardboard standee.)

Yeah, Sean Maher could definitely pull off Clark Kent...but I'm not to sure about Superman.

I always thought of Superman as the one superhero who didn't put on a disguise to be extraordinary, he did it in order to fit into society. By that definition Clark is the costume that Kal-El wears.

That's the way I always saw it too. Clark is the costume part of the character and Superman/Kal-El is the real, unmasked face.
It's why Christopher Reeve worked so well because he fit into Clark perfectly, he looked and played the wimpy, uncomfortable character just right and ocassionally we got glimpses of Kal-El underneath.
It's also one of the reasons Dean Cain didn't work. He may have looked okay as Superman but as Clark he was all wrong.

But I do have to agree that they should cast someone who can play Clark Kent first and Superman second.
Not saying that the new guy can't BTW as I know nothing about him.

ZEEK

Looks like Superman enough for me. Assuming he can act just a little it's a good casting job IMO.
