What's the chatter on this flick ?

Kinda seem like Cloverfield meets War of the Worlds ?

Somehow I wasn't paying attention to this one comin'.

Anyone ?

LWAVES

I'd never heard of this until I read your post. Having watched the trailer I don't see anything particularly appealing about it and I don't see anything particularly negative about it either.
I think you sum it up pretty well as a crossover between two movies. They take two good ideas and put them together, but with a lower budget and semi-recognisable cast. Not saying that's a bad thing but it doesn't scream originality and I'd imagine the dialogue and characters will have been created from a cookie cutter.
It'll probably get a quick DVD release (if it even gets to cinemas) in the US and will be straight to DVD here in the UK.

I could be wrong of course but these days there are so many similar looking films that follow a similar mold (not all low budget - see: Michael Bay etc) that I would be very surprised if I'm wrong.

The reason no one has heard of it, is because it was done pretty much under the radar. Shot on a low budget by the Strause brothers, who did all the FX themselves.

They're actually getting sued over it, because while they were making it, they were also doing FX shots for a different alien invasion flick coming next year, and the studio behind it is accusing them of stealing ideas from one for the other.

I'm curious about it. I hated the Brothers' last flick (Alien v Predator: Requiem) but this looks like it has potential, and I like that they made it themselves.

OK, so it wasn't just me. Good.

This reminds me of that clip that came out a while ago, about aliens attacking some town in S.America .... anyone recall that ? Is this the follow up to that test clip?

This is it.. >

That's an unrelated project, though it's also been picked up to be developed as a feature film. By Sam Raimi's company, I believe.

I've been following it for a while since the trailer popped up a few months back. First impression was that it's an eye candy movie, which makes sense since the Strause Brothers are primarily VFX and music video directors.

They are good at what they do, but whether they can stretch what they do into a full length movie is another story. "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" sucked, but it made money, which kind of says something about their target audience for 'Skyline.'

Based on the trailer, it looks like a movie about space vampires with a bunch of VFX sequences chained together, which will likely appeal to those who watched movies like '2012' and 'Transformer 3.'

Being low budget, I'm afraid the best sequences are probably the ones in the trailer and with no dialog, the story is probably incomprehensible.

Compare the 'Skyline' trailer with 'ID4,' which are basically telling the same story but look at the major differences in how they were being promoted.

Regardless, I guess we'll find out next week to see if the buzz for the movie has picked up any and if they'll let the press get a sneak peak, which should be a good sign as to how well it might do at the box office.

Yeah, great to look at and get all turned on, but ultimately unsatisfying.

That's a big judgement to make from a trailer.

I was just kidding around, but seriously, trailer aside, the fact that there has been very little buzz concerns me a bit, especially when the premiere is just a couple of weeks away. That either means the directors want to keep the overall story of the movie a secret, which doesn't seem to be the case. Or they don't want movie-goers to know how bad it is.

Being low budget, I would think the marketing guys would be hyping it through whatever online and social media channel they have at their disposal, but it has not been the case.

With a few exceptions, historically, freshmen movie directors coupled with unseasoned screenwriters--no buzz means no good.

I could be wrong though, which I really wish I was, because I miss good big screen sci-fi.

LOL

That is pretty much what I took away from the trailers I have seen for the film. Looks like a lot of eye candy and fluff, but little or no substance to carry it.

I'll be skipping this one.

It's a Skyline. A Nissan Skyline GT-R. It *IS* a transformer, of a sort.

Y'all probably thought the Nissan Z was the "hot" car they made. The Skyline was its big brother. 276 (advertised) horsepower (actually closer to 475 in many cases), AWD, AWS, twin turbos on in inline 3.0-liter 6-cylinder.

Jeremy Clarkson takes on the Skyline on "Top Gear":

Too bad. I was hoping it'd be one of those nice, under-the-radar surprises.

After their first movie, I should have known better.

Yup - they're rare as hen's teeth in the U.S., because they were never "officially" imported. There was a company in Nevada that finally went to the trouble of federalizing them (they had to nurse them through all the EPA & DOT tests, smog tests, fuel mileage tests, and the full battery of crash tests) and importing a few, but the cost went from around $30k (Japan price) to over $90k (U.S. price). And then Nissan decided that the nest-generation model would come to the U.S., now known simply as the Nissan GT-R, and ditching the vaunted Skyline moniker.

I believe it was a company called "Motorex" that imported them back in the day, but they got shut down on some technical loophole a few years ago, from what I recall. I've only ever seen ONE Skyline in the U.S., and it wasn't even at a car show or an event, but just in traffic. I was at a stoplight and realized that the car directly ahead of me was an electric-blue R34 Skyline. They look smaller in person. And better.

Still one of my favorite cars in the world. And still the possessor of one of the fastest production car lap times at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Not shabby for a car more than a dozen years old...
