Firefly (obviously).
Max Headroom.
Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
UFO
Starlost (in a cheap 70's video kind of way).
I'll include Dark Angel, even though it *DID* get two full seasons...

Others I missed-?

Taken, although it was really just a miniseries...

The 4400 had a brief run of brilliance. And then a couple-three more seasons of blah-blah. :)

The Prisoner.

I'm sure I'm overlooking far too many...

Though not as sci-fi as The X-Files, The Lone Gunmen series was shot down way too soon.

You left it out because there are just too many short-lived sci-fi series out there!

Hell, even Trek TOS was only 3 seasons! But what a freaking impact it had, eh?

For ME, three seasons kinda crosses the line outta the "brief" category.
Brief considering my love for it, though? Definitely.
Hell, check prices online for classic VS. 2009 phasers, communicators, Enterprises, etc!
That 60's show is where it's at, baby!

It didn't take me long to think of a few more that have also not been mentioned by anyone else. There are entirely too many short-lived SF series.

Better Off Ted
Charlie Jade
Cupid (original, remake sucked)
Dead Like Me
The Dresden Files
Nowhere Man
Odyssey 5
Pushing Daisies
Quark
Reaper
Special Unit 2
The Visitor
VR-5

I'm really surprised you mention Starlost. I love it, but the stories are much, much better than the production values. I'm guessing the budget for each episode hovered around $800

And I don't know if it was mentioned or why it hasn't been, but Plant of the Apes from 1974.

Not nearly as good as the original film, but worlds better that the sequels. Very entertaining show.

If you poke around the internet, you should be able to find the episodes that were filmed but never aired.

Let me know when you run a "Worst, Strange, Brief, Fascinating SF series ever..." I have the hands down winner: "Star Hunter" BOTH of them... with the exception of the Peter Gabriel theme song, it might even challenge for worst tv ever.
