I just got this movie at Big Lots yesterday for three bucks (cheaper than renting it) and I have to say, Lucas did not ruin it like I expected. Yeah, some parts were a bit re-edited, and some shell dwellers were replaced with CGI stuff, but overall, it was the same movie with a little added depth to the underground city is all.
Is it better than the original?
Not at all.
Visual was candy added- and it might offend fans of the more starkly abstract feel the original version needed to create with its limited budget- but I thought it was cool, in a Star Trek Remastered sort of way.

I feel it is better. The CG does add to the experience, and blends well enough (it seems those who are upset over the CG in this tend to be people who can't let go of their sour grapes over SW). As for his changes in the edit, those were just to correct changes made by the studio against his wishes when the original was released.

Damned good flick, though.

Really? It seemed to me to be purely aesthetic. Maybe I just don't remember the original well enough. I saw it in the theatre in '76 (art house cine), and on tape a few times in the eighties.

Always struck me as the ultra-realistic version of Logan's Run.

Is it just me, or does the motorcycle chase in the tunnel feel a whole hell of a lot like an early version of the Death Star trench run?

I have only seen this film when it was on TV many years ago so I suspect it was a cut-up version from what you get on DVD.

Lucas was a California kid; the need for speed is in his blood!
So, the answer is yes.

Oh, it sure WAS cut up. It's rated "R," you know.

Well, not just the racing aspect (which does show up many times in his films), but most particularly the way it was shot, and especially the sound design. Those bikes even sound a bit like Tie fighters.

I sort of suspected that. No wonder films go straight to DVD these days. You either get cable or a chopped up version of the film. Hardly worth the effort putting on the air.

P.S.
The last couple of replys I've posted came up with an error screen. When I check, the post is there. Anyone else getting that error message?

I've been getting the error message on every post - though they've all gone through, so far.

It just goes to show that Lucas was indeed a visionary film maker(emphasis on story and tone).
He followed it up with American Graffiti, and Star Wars. 3 great films.

I'd never go as far as calling him a washed up hack as many people claim. Before he retires from film, I'd love to see him make another film that reminds us of his sheltered genius.
