Legend & Blade Runner both suffered studio interference in the early 80's. So many versions now, so little time.
What are your favourites?
My Wife & Son BOTH like the theatrical cut of Legend better than the Director's Cut, and this weirds me a little, for I find the Director's Cut to be more fully engaging, if a bit slow compared to the theatrical release. But I DO admit to liking the Tangerine Dream score A LOT. In my world, I'd cut a version somewhere in between the two, preserving the Goldsmith theme while utilizing the TD score as much as possible otherwise, and including much of the added material.
In short, I love both versions.

Blade Runner is another story for me. The international '82 cut is my favourite, period. The studio messed with Scott, and in THIS ONE INSTANCE, I agree. I love the voice-over, and I like the escape drive in North Canada at the end.

So, opinions my peeps? I know it's been done before, but let's do it again, for old time's sake!

HAHA, the two films that scared Ridley Scott into making cookie cutter films AKA: box office disasters. Although Blade Runner did find a second life on VHS.

Legend: Theatrical cut by a mile. The Tangerine Dream score IS fantasy. Also no bummer ending where Jack and Lily realize that remaining together just isn't in the cards.

Blade Runner: The 1992 director's cut(I think that is the right year). Perfect. The narration in the theatrical is very noir, and I like it but a little heavy handed toward the end of the film.

If you like that, why not pick the more recent Director's Cut? It was better IMO.

I agree with you on Legend. I was 100% sure I would like the director's cut because, well, Ridley Scott's vision just had to be better than some studio execs, right? Wrong. Can't put my finger on it exactly but I just wasn't feeling the director's cut while the theatrical version still leaves me in awe.

As far as Blade Runner goes I could watch any version and truly be satisfied. I say that after watching each version from the super deluxe briefcase pack including the workprint. If I had a gun to my head I would go with the newest ultimate director's cut because it's so clean.

I think it's the pacing- it seems like so much stuff was included in the director's cut that the great God Momentum was not appeased.
For instance, Gump's fiddle-thing was a definite drag...
But the last few minutes of it were great IMO.

Yeah, you can take it that way......except I watched
The making of on the dvd. Scott, and the writer are pretty blatant about the final sequence images.
They never wanted them to remain together, and tried to convey that with the final scenes.

I like your idea(and the theatrical ending) better though.

Regarding Legend, I actually prefer the tv cut. Tangerine Dream score, and theatrical ending with many of the European cut scenes, and score thrown in the mix. Pretty bizarre getting a scene with TD score followed by Jerry Goldsmith.

2 or 3 added street shots, some shots shortened very slightly, CGI to make the stuntwoman look like Zora, wires removed on spinners, and Deckard's dialogue matches lip movement at the snake dealer. And a clean-up on the print. It's not very different at all, actually (that's a good thing). Very shiny, even though generally I prefer the voice-over version.

That "Final Cut" Blade Runner just didn't do it for me. Horrible transfer, lots of lines and bad color/lighting on my Blu-Ray version. I like the international release the best, because it IS done as film noir, and the voice-over fits that. Also, the stiff noir style with the voice-over fits Harrison Ford's cardboard-cut-out acting style perfectly; it's the best movie he ever did, IMHO.

Well, I'm a Tangerine Dream fan, so that pretty much settles it for Legend. The TD-scored version with the happy ending that gets shown on UK TV doesn't seem to be broken. I like the occasional unhappy ending, but it isn't compulsory.

As for Blade Runner - I'd have to borrow a MiB Neuralizer so I could watch one of the "directors" versions cold and see if I spotted the unicorn reference.

...although, quite frankly, they're both "atmosphere" pieces where the plot isn't that important...

Now, talking of Studio Interruptus, I'd like to see a version of "The Golden Compass" padded out to a decent length with the proper ending (which I believe they filmed) restored.

Okay, here it is- I just went through a scene-by-scene comparison between the two versions just to get it straight in my own head... the Theatrical Cut IS the better cut of the two, much leaner and also more fanciful due to the ethereal TD score (Goldsmith is just a little to "standard" for this flick, apart from the excellent Lilly's song theme).
Director's Cut: too much talking, generally (although some of the stuff between Lilly & Darkness is cool). It's a FANTASY, and doesn't NEED all the dialogue.
Lilly: shut up with the singing to the ugly one-horned mule.
Gump: shut up with the lame riddle! Break your violin a' la Chuck Berry on your OWN time!
Meg: shut up with the not eating your tender morsel right away.

Some nice extra shots, but nothing that moves the story along.

Personally, from now on I will watch the Theatrical Cut until Jack finds the ring near the end, then promptly switch to the Director's Cut to get the wonderful final scene between Jack & Lilly in its entirety (and to avoid the awful 80's song at the end of the Theatrical).

AND, the Director's Cut DOES NOT put the kibosh on Jack & Lilly's love in the end, it merely sets a period of dating until Jack becomes comfortable with the idea of becoming a Prince...

THAT is my final word on Legend.
And I'm sticking to it.

Sooo... In the spirit of Studius Interruptus, what do y'all think of "Brazil"? What's your favorite version? "Love conquers all" ending, or darker note?

Frankly, I've only ever seen the dark ending all the way through, though I've caught the Sheinberg edit with the happy ending before, but only in pieces.

Google is my friend; okay, the dude was right about Legend IMO, because the longer edit would have bored the s**t out of teenagers, and Tangerine Dream was a good call- that said, it was the wrong time for that kind of a movie. The Reagan era needed flicks like Rambo: First Blood Part II, not warm & fuzzy exquisitely photographed fantasies.

And I didn't like Brazil enough to buy the DVD to check out the "nice" edit.
Good that his Back To The Future suggestions were ignored, though.

I'd be here all week (Spotify is listing 81 albums... although that does include a lot of collections they've been pounding out music like stink since 1970 and are, to a certain extent, still going) and the style varies from early experimental (i.e. hard to listen to) stuff to more recent (elevator music from the economy-class heaven "well, I'm OK" people). The best stuff was in the transition between the two... (generally stuff from 1974-84 is good).

Soundtracks, if you liked Legend and Firestarter check out:

Thief
Risky Business
Sorcerer (never seen the film)
Flashpoint

Other albums - Semi-random pick would be:

Rubycon, Ricochet (if you like people jamming over a sequencer for 20 minutes)

Force Majeure (more rocky, with some air guitar moments)

Tangram

Hyperborea

Poland

Phaedra (pioneering electronica - maybe just the first and last tracks)

Of the slightly more recent stuff, maybe "Mars Polaris".

If you fancy famous poetry set to electronic music, "Tyger" or "Madcap's Flaming Duty".

Also, marginally off topic, there's always the Babylon 5 soundtrack - Chris Franke was a long-time member of TD and the first two compilation CDs (eponymous and "Messages from Earth") are excellent, as he took the trouble to remix the short soundtrack snippets into longer pieces).

Have they got round to launching Spotify in the US yet? There's a shedload of TD on there to browse.

Okay.... I can give you the voiceover. I don't care for it, but I can understand why some do.

But that ending?? Inexcusable dude.

Way too complicated for me to remember all the reasons I like which one.

I'll be very succinct.

Legend - The Tangerine Dream themed one.

Blade Runner- the noir voice over. Nails it for me.

My only issues with 2010 concern the lack of classical music as was used in 2001- I want to punch Hyams for his choice of a standard score for much of the flick.
Other than that, I love the movie.
