Maybe, after Cap'n Jack definitively "shot the puppy" in the last episode, and Davies is no longer running Doctor Who, they'll quietly forget that they were a 'Who spinoff (with added sex and swearing) and find their own niche.

Fingers crossed, 'cos I'm a bit underwhelmed with the current "Who" series.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

The five part 'Children of Earth' was great. I hope the writers follow the same format for the 10 episodes, but on an even grander scale. Torchwood is just so well suited for that type of story telling on television.

This is great news! The first 4 episodes of Children of Earth were some of the most intense TV I've ever watched.

I don't know what they'll do with 3/5 of the team dead, but I'll be there to find out ... assuming it's on somewhere that I can see it!

Just saw the first few eps. Don't know the full backstory / tie in w/ Dr Who, I've only seen a season or two of the newest version....

Torchwood is pretty darn good. I wish Primeval could have been as well written and directed, but oh well.

Children of Earth was pretty good, I agree. (And I wasn't a fan of the first 2 seasons, so was very pleasantly surprised by CoE)

Miracle Day...not so much. A weak (abominably weak IMO) 3 episode story stretched out beyond all comprehension to 10 episodes with no payoff and most things telegraphed well ahead. Train. Wreck.

What was Jane Espenson thinking about being involved with this? There were a few (very few) good bits, John DeLancie is always good value, but it was mostly very very dull with bugger all SF content. Real shame, could have been fun.

I don't know, she keeps raving about it on Twitter.

Season 4 simply didn't work for me. I liked Jack and Gwen, some bits were quite good but most of it was a horrible mess, compounded by the hugely unlikeable Rex acting like he was God's gift to sci-fi. I guess Children of Earth was a blip.

Of course she does. A writer who works on a show and says "Meh, it's kinda lame" will have trouble finding more work.

"Goram it kid, let's frak this thing and go home! Engage!"

True but she's been going far beyond that, right up to the point of doing live Twitter feeds during each episode. I think she genuinely believed it was good. Still, some people watching did too so who knows?

It's tougher to be objective when you've worked on it, I imagine.

Mostly agree. I think there was a half-decent 3 parter lurking in there somewhere but whatever possessed them to think they could pad it out to 10 episodes?

They also lost the horror factor - starting out with some promising "squick" which seemed to be forgotten about by the end, when people "killed" just seemed to lapse into convenient comas.

One problem is, we were supposed to be horrified by the "category 1" solution - but I can't really see a feasible alternative. Sure, any attempt to apply a similar solution to any plausible real-world problem would be deeply worrying (to say the least), but in the fantasy situation set up by the show it seems like the only solution - the guy spread out on the autopsy bench in ep. 1 would probably vote for it.

The "government out of control and sanctioning atrocities" theme felt like a bit of a re-tread of "Children of Earth" too, as did the close connection between the event and his Jack's shady past.

Plus, the bad guys needed to come to much, much stickier ends than (a) the Palpatine manouver and (b) being blown up offscreen.

Yep, no horror, no sci-fi as such, no pace (goes with the 3 ep story padded to 10) Precious little characterisation (the CIA agent with the hole in his chest whose name escapes me just pissed me off and many others were just cardboard cutouts)

Gwen's whole "I'm Welsh, deal with it!!!" attitude smacked of desperately trying to get over to the US audience that she *wasn't* English (as all too often, the writers insulting the intelligence of the US audience.. they (and the UK audience of course, of which I am part) didn't need reminding every other ep with all the subtlty of a bad Friday night in Swansea! Patronising much?)

LOL: Palpatine manoeuver...I like that :-)

On disc #3, eps 6 and 7, I believe.

Am very underwhelmed with these 2 eps. Not liking how the story is going, and the directing is ridiculous. The scenes are Primeval bad in how they're laid out. Ugh. Hope this trend doesn't continue.
