Gorramn book kept me up half the night, and I think my eyes might be popping in and out of my sockets.

So.

Tell me...

...Where do we go from here?

We go another 8 novels and then the Apocalyptic trilogy (Hell's Bells, Stars and Stones, Empty Night) to cap it all off.

As to how we get there, dunno, but should be interesting to find out.

But... but...

Select to view spoiler:

Everything's been destroyed. The office. The apartment. The Beetle. Harry! Harry... I mean... is he dead? He seemed kind of dead. And if not dead, under the power of Mab, which is less final than dead but still a hindrance, I think. But, with the bullets and the bright light and the dead. And the sound of a train, which I understand not at all, so I'm unsure about the dead thing. But it still seems likely that Harry is dead. So how... How?

The Man They Call Soul...

Don't worry. Jim Butcher's brilliant that way. He'll keep taking us on one heck of a ride, throwing curve balls the entire way.

I figured that with the title "Changes" that things were going to change for Harry, but I did NOT expect to that degree. Just...wow...

You really can't expect Mab to let Harry off that easy.

Select to view spoiler:

What I'm curious about is who was on the trigger? Seriously we're talking about a true murderers row here. Then again, knowing how Butcher likes to toy with his readers, it could be one of his friends.

This book was unique in my reading experience in that the first page and the last both contained bombshells.

Anyway. Harry is going to be an einherjar. Or did you think that doughnut was only a doughnut?

That... is both crazy and entirely reasonable. I hadn't considered the vast mythology surrounding Odin. I have to assume the Dresdenverse doesn't restrict its einherjar to Valhalla. It could work. I'm less dizzy trying to figure out what could possibly happen now. I still badly want the next segment of the story, though.

All I can say is OMFG..... practically every page I turned all I could think was " what????" It was an amazing ride and I am dying for NV to read it so I can talk about it.

Select to view spoiler:

kind of glad Susan is dead because don't you just want to smack the snot out of her? Also I know he had to get power, but Mab>?? Seriously? Mab? He's the Winter Knight now and more fully under her power if he lives than I think he can survive. Also what will this do to Molly? She didn't even enter this book and I'm not sure how that's going to work out. There's still all the problems with the council and the Black Council and having Harry be the Winter Knight is certainly not going to improve that situation.... on the plus side though Harry might actually have a decent place to live and be fed on a regular basis if he survives

Spoilers and musings ahoy:

Select to view spoiler:

Keep in mind that the next book will be called Ghost Story, so that kinda implies that he'll be spending some/most of it dead. As to who pulled the trigger, while Kincaid had said he'd shot Harry if required, he'd have the sense, and skill to pull off a headshot, thus making sure no pesky death curses got thrown off. Also, Temp-Knight Murphy looking identical to how Harry saw her with his True Sight = awesome

So who else will be hounding Jim Butcher at D*C this year?

ooh good point Nico.. but still he needs to write faster. He can't just leave us like this.

Select to view spoiler:

but why would Kincaid do it? Not like Ivy's upset with Harry or anything, though she did seem under duress or stress at least in terms of how Kincaid was responding to Harry... hmm I'm pretty sure if Ivy were endangered Kincaid would kill Harry to get her out of it. Also, kinda starting to wonder about Lea's alliegence as well. She's not wholly Mab's and you know she might have had the right idea changing Harry into a dog would certainly have kept him out of all the trouble he's been in. Also, why didn't Harry consider taking his daughter to live with Michael. Not like one more kid would be all that noticeable in his brood and he and Charity would take good care of her. Also Harry's going to need to keep tabs on her because her powers are going to show up eventually... so much to process.

I, too, have been wondering what will happen to Molly. She did pull off that intense 'one-woman-rave' spell that drove hundreds of vampires nuts, so hopefully she can qualify for the White Council now? Otherwise, upon losing the protection of Harry as her mentor, won't the Doom of Damocles fall on her?
I've heard a theory that whoever shot Harry did so to get him out of his obligation as the Winter Knight, like it was some kind of friendly killing. If that were the case, though, I would think something a little easier to come back from would be the way to go. If Harry were drowned, for instance, and dead just long enough for the power to return to Mab, then revived, that might get him out of the contract. Or it might not. On the other hand, shooting him would get him out of his obligation, but it also kills him outright.
Clearly, there has to be some way for him to come back, but if the next book is, in fact, called Ghost Story that seems to be Harry spending a whole lot of time dead. Which is weird. I'll be disappointed if he just 'gets better' or can just get back to his body after it's been decaying in a lake for awhile or somesuch. I think it's not likely to go that way, but it's a trope used commonly enough to concern me.
I really like the einherjar theory. But then he wouldn't be a Ghost, would he?

Keep the Shiny side up

One thing I can't figure out.

Select to view spoiler:

After Stevie D. tried to kill Harry in Father Forthill's church, he was questioned and identified Susan as the person who hired him. Next thing you know, Harry and Sanya are trying to rescue Susan from the Federal Building. Did anyone see a resolution to who hired the hit on Harry, and, if it wasn't Susan, how'd they know he was at the church?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Red Court vamps can build a human skin that looks like whatever they want. I got the impression that Harry knew right away that one of them had been impersonating Susan and that the real Susan was probably in trouble. Either way he wanted to know where she was, so he sent out the Little Folk, and they found her. Not too much of a mystery.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Kincaid, he said he'd nail Harry with a headshot to avoid the death curse, and Kincaid doesn't miss. Ever.

If it was Kincaid, the book would've ended just like the Sopranos. $50 says it was one of Cowl's minions.

I think the next book will start out with Harry's body stuck in the coma ward of the hospital.

Having Odin make an apperance gives me some hope that my personal favorite Gods (Ukko, Tapio, Ahto, and the rest of the Finnish dieties) might get a shout-out in some future novel.

Something kind of struck me this weekend:

Select to view spoiler:

Where might this lead for Thomas? Mab said in one of the earlier books that if something were to happen to Harry, she would recruit his brother as her Knight. Would that still be her option?

Also, I don't think Harry is in a coma. I found out that the original title for the next Dresden book was going to be 'Dead' but the publishers wanted it changed. So now it's 'Ghost Story' which has pretty much the same end result. Harry is somewhere in the afterworld of the nevernever.
