It's all over the Interwebs. It could be a hoax, a dream, or just some April Fool's Day prank, but for now, file Joss Whedon being among the shortlist of Avengers’ directors under R for rumors.

By now, you may well have heard that IESB has a source who claims Whedon is among the finalists to direct The Avengers, a whittled-down few that might have included The Incredible Hulk’s Louis Leterrier.

Zak Penn is writing the screenplay for the film featuring Earth’s Mightiest Marvel properties, which is expected to be the culmination of the Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor movies.

But if this rumor is proves true, then the job would go not to oft-reported Leterrier, but to Whedon, best-known for creating the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Dollhouse. Whedon’s directing credits are few, but he did helm 2005’s Serenity, the big screen adaptation/continuation of Firefly.

So the real question is: Could Whedon be a smart choice here? In Serenity, he showed a high-energy, de-personalized directorial style that’s similar to Jon Favreau, who helmed Iron Man and Iron Man 2, as well as Leterrier and Captain America’s Joe Johnston. Whedon also has a prior history with Marvel properties, having kicked off the best-selling 'Astonishing X-Men' title, as well as serving as second writer on 'Runaways'.

IESB has been adamant that this is not a hoax, and to be fair, the news went up at 11pm yesterday, the day before April Fools Day. Still, it feels improbable and should be taken with a grain of salt for the time being.

One more thing: Whedon is currently working on Cabin in the Woods, which he is writing and producing, as well as a sequel to his Internet action/musical sensation Dr. Horrible. No word if signing on for The Avengers would throw his other projects off their schedules, but if it did cause delays, does that affect your enthusiasm about his helming The Avengers?

Meanwhile, if Whedon does get the job, any concerns that he’s not writing The Avengers, but only serving as director? Putting aside his much-lauded contributions to pop culture, the question is, is he a good enough director for this big-budget, highly-anticipated film? We think he could be. What do you think?

Would increase Joss' cred as a Director if all were to go well...

Possibly working against Joss' chances at present is that Leterrier is hot off directing Clash Of The Titans...
