Man, I gotta edit "Harbor Lights," "She Ain't Heavy," & "Freak nation" into a single final movie.
What software do I need, my fellow Guevarra fans?

I'm not sure about ripping the video files from the DVDs in an editable format. I think Virtual Dub will do it, but I'm not sure. When I have done so, I tend to cheat, and just pipe the video signal from the DVD through a camera, and capture into the editing program. Check out fanedit.org for tips on that process.

As for the actual editing, I use Premiere myself, but aside from bells and whistles, an editing program is an editing program, so use what you can get.

You could try DVD Decrypter (or whatever the latest name is) to rip the files to your hard drive.
Then as Story said Virtual Dub would work.
Or you can use AviDemux (my personal choice), TMPGEnc Express or lots of other assorted software. Try this site for help:

http://www.videohelp.com/

I think its great and can provide a lot of info.

Ideally you want software to rip the .vob's, remove any protection, edit the files and then save them back (without having to recompress them) as .vob's ready to burn.
You'll probably need more than one piece of software but you should be able to find all you need in freeware.
Or you could 'obtain' it by other means.

As an all round suggestion the TMPGEnc suite of software can do most of the stuff and is fairly easy to learn. You'll just need something to rip the files first.

If you are still stuck shout up and I'll see what I can do for you. Maybe even get you some software.

One of these days, maybe this summer, I plan to do this with Serenity, and add in some of the deleted scenes.

Oh yeah! And put the title song from the series in there!
And I could REALLY go to town on Superman II. Take out the dopey transporter accident in STTMP...

It could be endless.

Not just the song, I plan to cut a credits montage in the exact style of the series, but using footage from the movie, and including Chiwitell, to play right at the end of the flick (would muck up the pacing at the beginning).

Heck, I've been working on my own re-edit of the abysmal 5th highlander movie, and have made literally hundreds of changes, shot new footage, created new FX, redubbed whole characters.... there is a lot of power in editing.

Are you a member over at fanedit.org?
I don't remember seeing your username but that doesn't mean anything as you may have changed it if you are a member. I only visit occasionally.
I have several of their edits. Some are absolutely superb. Namely:
The Matrix De-zionized - Combines the two sequels into one and cuts out all Zion references.
Spider-man 3: The Darkness Within - Makes the film watchable.
Adywan's excellent cuts of The Star Wars Saga. Much less Jar Jar, Han shoots first, no Luke/Leia kiss, less Mannequin Skywalker, no explaining how the force works etc etc.

And Chris there is a Dark Angel edit there but this guy has trimmed ALL of season 2. Check it out if you want but I'm not sure how their downloads work anymore as the authorities cracked down on them awhile ago.

I'm not a member there, no. But I have stopped in several times. I have a few of A Digital Man's edits (Superman II, Blade Runner, Dune) and the best fan-edit I've ever seen - Star Wars: A New Hope: Revisited.

I find the idea of fan edits fascinating, but I don't have a desire to see most unless they do something I really want to see done. those that just cut out the bits an individual editor didn't like, I tend to skip.

I'll join once I have my Highlander 5 reedit done.

Thanks, you actually just corrected a minor mistake I made. The Star Wars films I have are by A Digital Man not Adywan. And yes they are excellently done, they make the prequels just about watchable IMO.

I thought about the Superman II edit. Is it worth it?

The only full movie edit I ever did was to put Sin City in the order I wanted with each characters story told in one go. Basic chopping and moving which I mainly did to cut each stories credits out and just to see if I could do it.

Good luck with your own edit.
