Warner is perhaps bad news. An indy label might've been a better choice for aggressive distribution.

Shout! Factory is the distributor here, and they have been acquiring DVD rights to a lot of shows on the cult fringe lately that the major companies might not think have enough sales potential.

MAX!!! Finally, finally coming to DVD... took long enough! Glad to see they'll be including lots of bonus material. This show screams for bonus material.

Max Headroom is a kind of spiritual cousin to Firefly. Both brilliant and unique shows that didn't last too long on broadcast TV... bit of trivia, Mark Sheppard's (Badger) dad was a regular cast member on Max Headroom. Both shows had amazing created worlds, the art direction and atmosphere gave both shows a look all their own. They are both art.

Max Headroom was messed with too back in the day and deserved a much longer run. Maybe its dark and smart satire of TV networks hit the mark a little too often. The portrayal of a network that watches ratings in real time and will pull the plug on a show, sometimes in mid-stream, sounds a little too familiar...

I'm definitely buying this when it's released, and probably extras to introduce the show to folks who missed it.

It was not a safe show to show. Had the ratings been through the roof, they would have grit their teeth & beared it. Just okay ratings meant they could flush the anti-corporate abomination.

I would have sworn that you had started this thread Chris. Well, I got that one wrong.

So this show completely skipped by me. I knew it was around and that everyone was going on about it but never got around to actually watching it. In fact the only things I remember about it are Matt Frewer played Max, the stuttering head with shades.
Could someone please tell me what the show was all about?
Is it worth checking out for someone who has never seen it?
Why wasn't it a safe show?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Headroom_%28TV_series%29
Quote:

In 1987, the story told in 20 Minutes into the Future, a made-for-television movie, formed the basis of a fully-fledged drama television series. The film was re-shot as a pilot program for a new series broadcast by the U.S.-based ABC television network. The pilot featured plot changes and some minor visual touches, but retained the same basic storyline. The only original cast retained for the U.S. version series were Matt Frewer (Max Headroom, Edison Carter) and Amanda Pays (Theora Jones); a third original cast member, W. Morgan Sheppard, joined the series as "Blank Reg" in later episodes.

The U.S. series expanded on the cyberpunk themes in the British TV movie but otherwise had no connection to the British music video show. In an arrangement perhaps unique in the history of television, the U.S. spin-off series featuring Max Headroom was a fictional drama, while its main character was originally created for a non-fiction entertainment show in Britain.

It skewered Corporate s***bags & ridiculed the plugged-in mentality of couch potatos.
I'm amazed it was even made in the US at all.
Plus: some chases & stuff.

A must-buy.

Sorry for that, Chris, but I just wanted to give the people who had only barely just heard about the show to get a taste for what they'd been missing.
Hey, my first exposure to Firefly was through that Hello, Cowgirl! site, with the episodes in RealPlayer format!
Sure, it was "crappy internet vid", but it made me run out and buy the DVDs!

Still, even with the crappy video quality, that first five minutes really gets me excited. Remember, I'm a rotorhead, so I love anything with helicopters! (Airwolf! Blue Thunder! Deadly Encounter!)
I especially love that one shot looking straight up the side of the apartment building, with the orange sky, and the Network 23 chopper maneuvering into a hover precisely parallel with the building's edge. That's just beautiful!

Okay, we watched the first ep...
Content-wise, it was better than in my memory- hugely entertaining. Only drawback- like Star Trek TNG (produced the same year), it was shot on film & transferred to video for editing, FX & final airing, SO, the video quality is just like TNG on DVD, that is, not quite perfect. But for a show like Max Headroom, it *might* actually work FOR it better than a pristine film-like quality that one might expect from a newly mastered DVD.

Sonisall characterized the show as "odd."

For the record Fox released WKRP in Cincinnati --- Season 1 on DVD a few years back

Unfortunately it doesn't look promising for the rest of the seasons to get released

The main problem the fans these days have is that there were music rights issues and all those songs we know and love that were used in the show are replaced by other music

okay there are more issue according to this blog http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2007/03/wkrp-dvd-not-ok.html including syndication episodes being used and other cuts *sigh*

I knew there was music replacements but I really wanted the episodes in some form, not to mention, I bought the title cheaply ....

As far as Max Headroom goes, I will purchase it as soon as I have cash to do so

Just as an aside http://blog.stayfreemagazine.org/2005/06/mad_hot_ballroo.html contains the info on how the makers of a documentary had to go about clearing music for their film

An example of how much music licensing costs are made by the interviewee in the stayfreemagazine article:

Quote:

Stay Free!: Did you license the songs for a particular time period, or did you get them for perpetuity? Answer: We first cleared music for two years for festival use, and then went back and negotiated for worldwide commercial use in all media, for perpetuity. It was extremely expensive. For most films, music licensing is 1 to 10 percent of the production budget; ours came in at 45 percent: $140,000.

and here is another example:

Stay Free!: How much did it cost for the average song?

Sewell: It depends on how many entities are attached to it. Our typical total cost for a classic was about $15,000-20,000, split between publisher and master rights. With the Rocky theme, the publishers didn't want to overexpose the song. That was the issue with Ray Charles' "Hit the Road Jack" as well.

And heres a bit about potential fair use and how licensing rears its ugly head

'again this is from the article I quoted from before

Quote:

Stay Free!: Were there any scenes you had to cut out of the film because of copyright?

Sewell: When we were down shooting the boys playing foosball, Ronnie yelled out, "Everybody dance now!" Just when I think we've finished the film, someone points out that we have to clear that because it's a "visual vocal cue." So I went back to the publishers, and the first publisher, Spirit, says they'll throw it in with the other things we've cleared if Warner Chappell throws it in. But Warner Chappell said, "Look, we've cut you some nice deals, we can't give this to you." They said this three-second bit would cost $5,000. And since they had Most Favored Nation status it would have raised the cost on similar uses, like the Rocky ring-tone. So I went back to lawyer and said we should keep it in because this should be a poster child for fair use. But he didn't recommend taking on the music industry. Those corporations have too much money for us to play Norma Rae our first time out.

Amanda Pays (who also starred in The Flash TV Series]

William Morgan Sheppard (Blank Reg) !!! ... who is the Father of Mark Sheppard ... and the latter gent guested on a little Known show called Firefly ....

(edit: I see that the Sheppard news is not new but the bit I added about Payscould be if one hasn't looked at Pays' imdb, com page)

The Elder Sheppard by the way is a major part of at least one of the special features on the Max Headroom set
