Production, direction, music, choreography, character...
As electrifying as Enter The Dragon was, and as amazing as Drunken Master II was, I have to go with Forbidden Kingdom.
It was lyrical & beautiful, if a bit limited by the PG-13 nature of the content.

What's YOUR pick?

Hmm...hard to pick.

I'm kinda torn between 'Drunken Master' and Zhang Yimou's 'Hero'. If I had to choose, tho', it would be 'Hero'.

By the way, I picked this up on dvd months ago on your recommendation, and really enjoyed it. It's like a throwback to those early 70's Kung Fu flicks (ancient time, anything goes storylines, fantastic stuntwork} with modern dazzling effects. I wonder if it's available in Blu-Ray?

I loved it. Thanks.

I think Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is my favorite of all time.

I would say that Hero is the best looking martial arts film around, but as for the best overall that is a harder pick.
Forbidden Kingdom is great and I thank you CIA for recommending that film to me many moons ago, but I'd have to go with Enter The Dragon as it has that classic status and it is a Bruce Lee film. Others may follow but he is still the best.

ETD was the best show of Lee's abilities, a solid choice. However, for sheer acting, Fist Of Fury (AKA Chinese Connection) blows me away. Lee's Chen is such a wildman. Whoah.

I'm still partial to Unleashed. Not only was Jet Li at his best, switching between three very different fighting styles to reflect his character's emotional arc. . . he actually had an emotional arc.

There's a depressing number of martial artists who can't act to save their lives, but Unleashed is where Jet Li proves that he's not one of them. Dude can emote.

I'd love to see him make a non-action movie; he could probably blow it out of the park.

Both done, btw, as rather nice spaghetti westerns as well, but quite good in their original form as well.

Hard to say since martial arts film covers a very wide range if you group Wuxia movies along with all the other sub-genres (and there are lots).

Personally, I like a lot of Jet Li's stuff. 'Fist of Legend' comes to mind as being one of the best without much wife-fu (if any).

Excellent choices Frem, and, at one time, my choice would have been Seven Samurai, but there have been some new masterpieces that have come about, such as;

House of Flying Daggers - lyrical and beautiful (The drum scene)

Hero - of course, downright deliberate

Drunken Master - both funny and well put together

But my all-time favorite, so far from the ones I've seen is:

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - poetic and epic just begins to describe it.

Not taking away anything from anyone's choices, but that's just it, isn't it? We all have our tastes.

Armour of God II : Operation Condor Good character, with a kind of Martial arts Indianna Jones, superb stunts both vehicle and martial arts and great use of a set piece to highlight Chan's masterful choreography with stunts and fighting scenes. In partcular the finalé in the wind tunnel. Their are moments that mirror the timing and genuis of Buster Keaton. Fantastic stuff and probably my favourite Jackie Chan film. Plus VERY funny.

Enter The Dragon: This just oozes cool and hipness to the extreme. Lee is measured yet fascinating to behold. The finalé with the mirrored room is one of the best things ever shot on celluloid. I still marvel at how they did that. VERY clever indeed. Superb direction and exceptional cinematography. It defined the CRASH ZOOM which has never been rivalled.

Zu Warriors: Fantasy martial arts at it's best. This film just explores the richness of ancient folklore and realizes it with style. There's so much adventure going on here it warms the soul! I had so much fun watching this when I rented it as a kid. Love this film.

Yojimbo is one of my all time favourites, but I don't think I ever really thought of it as a 'Martial Arts' movie.
I mean, there are discussions on how skilled Sanjuro is (and he demonstrates it, too), but I don't think it really 'lingered' on that aspect unlike in, say, 'Hero' (where Wu Ming's/Nameless' skill to kill in 10 paces is highlighted).

I also liked Jet Li's 'Fearless'. The fights were quite good, IMHO.

I'd like to see a more 'realistic' depiction of two of the styles I practice, tho': Tai Chi Chuan/Taijiquan (Tai Chi Master w/ Jet Li was kinda corny and over the top) and Hsing-I Chuan/Xingyiquan (The One was...ok? But it didn't really show Xingyi well, I think)

edit:
2 'Western' movies, relatively recent, were kinda good, too, from a MA perspective:
- The Bourne series (even Taken w/ Liam Neeson, which was Bourne-ish, was quite good)
- The Hunted w/ Tommy Lee Jones and del Toro: nice fights (I recommend this one actually...esp. since I'm filipino and they highlight one of my favourite fighting arts)

Agree with these - love Yojimbo/Sanjuro/Seven S. but never really thought of them as Martial Arts.

Same for the Zatoichi series - I keep trying to pimp those films on this board but it feels like I've never gotten any takers. It is a wealth of Asian Cinema goodness imho.

Hero (gorgeous and a great story), & Tiger are my more mainstream favorites otherwise.

Funny though, I like the English dub version the best- the music is so much more heroic & grand than the Chinese version (though, too many good bits were cut out of it, sadly).

Ditto. I don't hesitate to count The Seven Samurai as one of the greatest movies ever made, but I see it more as a military drama than as a martial arts movie --a good martial arts movie requires a compelling big bad whose skills match those of the hero(es), but the bandits in SS were mostly just generics. A force of nature, dangerous only in terms of their numbers and more advanced weapons, and whom the samurai fight off through tactics and strategy, rather than through straightforward fighting skill.

The only samurai presented as a truly superhuman fighter is Kyuzo, and most of his action happens either offscreen (when he captures the gun) or is too subtle to register (like the over-before-it-began fight with the drunkard) --which of course makes more dramatic impact than any amount of stunts and wirework.

(Samurai 7, Gonzo's steampunk anime version, is more akin to what I mean; the Nobuseri are much more individually dangerous, and the individual samurai are all presented as fighting at a higher-than-human level that the Villagers can't match. Then there's the Emperor and Ukyo, who are manipulating things behind the scenes every bit as adroitly as Kambei organizes the villagers)

Oh, yah - while an actor rather than a movie, I do feel that Al Leong deserves an honorable mention here, as he seems to be in almost *every* kung fu flick or bad B-movie, particularly old school Canon/Golan-Globus stuff, usually getting his arse handed to him by the hero, sometimes repeatedly or fatally.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Leong

How bout that for a job description ?
"Well, I get my ass kicked by Chuck Norris a lot."

Seriously, the guy is in like, EVERYTHING - just look for the "nameless mook" with the Fu Manchu and there he is, usually getting beaten up, shot, stabbed, impaled, or even eaten (by Godzilla, no less!) - and somehow manages to make it look impressive, no mean feat in itself.

So here's one for Al Leong, hands down King of the nameless mooks.

The good is that Jackie did his own voice, and like I said, the music is way cooler.
The bad is that they cut stuff like the more violent shootings in the desert attack, the killing of the hotel owner (good cuts where my Son is concerned), the water gag where Jackie seem to be getting kissed by the girls... mostly extreme violence & little bits for time to keep it just over 90 minutes.
Still, the essence is there, and it is a leaner (if not meaner) movie.

Cannot stand Jet Li, and Hero irritated me sooo much that I thought I was having an aneurysm, my headache was so bad. Same with The One.

I loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 'cause I was a fan of Chow Yun Fat's since Hard Boiled & The Killer. (And also I was hot for Zhang Ziyi)

Oh, and I really love the Transporter films!

As for all-time favorite, I'd have to say all of Jackie Chan's up to The Tuxedo. Everything past that has sucked, because you can tell he started using wires when he got to a certain age.

This Parkour thing is pretty insane — I can't imagine how these guys do it without regularly falling to their deaths!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkour
It's always seemed to me that these moves were inspired by Jackie Chan's acrobatics.

But I was really impressed with District B13...

Hmmm. I enjoyed Banlieue 13/District B13, but I don't think I ever considered it a Martial Arts movie (I guess I was too fixated on it's portrayal of parkour).
David Belle was awesome in it, tho'.

As for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: at the time I first saw it, when I was new to chinese martial arts, I really enjoyed it. I dunno now, tho'. I mean, I'd still recommend that folks see it, at least once, if they're interested in the Wuxia genre, but...I dunno. Maybe I watched it one too many times.

edit: thanks for the heads-up on the B13 sequel. That and I love watching that commercial every now and again. David Belle is great!

Sorry, no subs in this trailer, but I've read that it's basically about how Ip Man ended up in HK and some of the rival school didn't exactly like him all that much. Main one being the Hung Gar school ran by Sammo Hung's character.

Ip Man, of course, eventually becomes Bruce Lee's master, so there is a young Bruce Lee in the movie.
