There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

My opinions are in fairly sharp contrast with yours. I still haven't seen Nemesis or Insurrection, so I'll have to leave them off the list.

I wrote a treatment before Enterprise (in 2000) began that basically took the ideas in "The Undiscovered Country" and continued them into the future. Majel Roddenberry actually read it, but they had already decided to revisit the origins of Trek. Basically, my treatment was that a group of rebels found a disabled Enterprise that had been left in a Nebula. They band together to fight a now corrupt Federation and try to make alliances to retake Earth from the dark forces that were revealed in "The Undiscovered Country". BTW It was called Star Trek: Phoenix and I registered it with the WGA in 2002.

It wasn't any more far fetched than The Voyage Home.
Even with Data's "Emotion Chip", and the 2 captains working together? Granted, the story(and bad guy) was a bit flimsy....but surely you jest.
1994 was a good year for Star Trek. I never thought I'd see Picard and Kirk sharing the big screen.

It's funny, I've seen them all but I can't off the top of my head differentiate any of the Next Gen movies! lol I remember being impressed when they crashed the saucer section in whatever movie that was but I don't recall enjoying the rest of the film. I remember liking well enough one everyone totally hated, but I'm not sure which one that is--prolly the one with F. Murray Abraham. And of the Original cast movies I really only liked the Whale one. That's the only one that brought the major charm factor of the tv show forward. But the movie that blows all of them out of the water in terms of bringing forward the charm of the original series is Star Trek (2009).

So, 11.) The one where they "meet god"--deeply silly.
10.) The one with Christopher Plummer as the Shakespeare obsessed Klingon.
9.) The Motion Picture. Zzzzzzzzz.
8-3.) None of them as good as whole seasons of the original series (Space Seed > Wrath of Khan)
2.) Whale one. "Double dumb-ass on you!"
1.) McCoy's finest cinematic hour--Star Trek (2009)

It was always my favorite since the day I saw it. There's a lot to like in it, even if the movie itself is hardly the most technical or engaging plot out of all the movies. Other than the new Trek movie, it was the last Trek movie I remember enjoying immensely in the theater. All the others that followed had to "earn" my love with repeated viewings at home. This year I loved the new movie. As Kirk once said, it made me feel .....young.

There's a good story here! See The Director's Cut!!!

The 14 year old in me has spoken! I have not seen the movie since. As I recall I was constantly confusing this movie with "The Changeling." At 14 this was considered "a total rip." My apologies.

See it again, the Director's Cut, and on a good TV- then tell me of the ZZZZZZZ's it incurs.
It is beauty in motion, as well as a lesson to be learned, mi amigo.

That's what I thought when you placed it so low.

But really, when it comes to Trek, I feel that in many ways, Trek itself is better suited to Television, allowing it to explore various ideas in an episodic fashion. It can work as a movie, but it tends to work best when it blends in other genres and/or styles.

My favorite Trek movies are the ones that don't tell typical Trek stories.

Wrath of Khan is a submarine movie, Das Boot in space.

Star Trek is a Space Opera (lifting very liberally from Star Wars both in style and plot structure).

First Contact is Aliens on the Enterprise.

The Voyage Home is a fish-out of water comedy (more akin to Beverly Hills Cop than most Trek).

The Undiscovered Country is a Cold War thriller.

The rest, which I still like to varrying degrees (except Nemesis - hate it) are4 essentially TV episodes blown out to feature length. Even your beloved TMP, which if you trimmed out the admittedly cinematic loooooong takes and contemplative staring, really doesn't have that much actual story.

TMP & Insurrection are both just stretched-out eps, that's why I like 'em so much.
